Yeah, nah. Despite everyone (me included) wanting it to be over, we don't know what the next 6 months holds. We could have a benign variant that gives us all a degree of protection and all subsequent variants are close enough that we all get off with something similar to the current flu. Or we could find a variant that is extremely devastating and takes out a lot of people.
We don't know. I am not making this happen. I am looking at possible outcomes.
Its easy for some people to sit back and say that some of these Premiers have done poor jobs, but whether you wanted the borders open or closed, they protected the people that they govern.
I have been listening to people in WA from day one saying that the borders should be opened, yet the economy here has been running well for most of that time and for most people its normal. I understand for some people that is a problem, but only a fool would have opened up straight away and ignored the negatives. It's a cheap shot to take aim at any of them now and criticise the way they handled it. Especially when there was no negative scenario that you had to deal with.
I get that people are worried about variants, however the natural progression of viruses is to become milder as they mutate more. This has been proven over and over again and follows logical evoloution theory. They believe the cold and flu viruses that go around now are variants of the spanish and black death viruses. Delta was less dangerous than Alpha and Omicron is very mild in comparison. Transmissability is up, but severity is way down.
You would do better to worry about a new Alpha strain coming from an animal or lab than variants of COVID 19. A strain like ebola or Hendra with airborne capability is the one that will rock the world and actually deserve a response like the one we have had.
The problem I have with all Government in Australia is that they had a plan for this. It was a sound plan based on solid data. It was thrown out in favour of popular opinion very early and from then on the whole thing has been driven by a government and media driven agenda of fear and response equals votes, not science.
We have not seen any major effects of COVID. We have seen significant effect and harm from government response and have not even scratched the surface of what we will have to pay in the future.
I have said it before and will say it again, the US, where COVID has been endemic for nearly 2 years, had a 15% increase in deaths at the worst times. 15% above normal background deaths. That seems bad, but it is not really all that significant.
