Bio-Inspired Sinusoidal Leading-Edges- Not sure about all that, but comparing the 1095 to the 980, at 88kg: at lower speed and while pumping hard, the 980 can stall and drop hard, whereas the 1095 just slows and sinks. The 980 is still prefered for pitching waves, but the 1095 rules for sloping waves. Take offs on the 1095 are tricky if I need to angle hard for a pitching wave, so I just go straight and then glide back to the wave, the 980 can angle on take off and stay high on the wave easier. If I had choose between the two, I'd take the 1095 due to the amazing glide, stability at take off, insane low speed recovery, and it turns really well. As I have both, Im very happy!
Tuning wise, I tried the 1095 with the 178 tail and a shim under the front screw and found it rode nose high, front footed, fast, and a bit choppy (pitch sensitive.) With a 13.5" KD tail and shim at back screw, it was slightly less fast, much more stable and even footed, and turned just fine. I'm lacking in pumping ability, so the glide back out was much appreciated. For a less skilled foiler such as myself, I'd say the 1095 is really easy to ride and just feels very polished.
Hey Hwy1North. I am right at your size (85kg). I am currently riding the only set up I've ever had (1150 Axis / 460 rear) and I am now able to pump for 45 seconds due to leg burn out (I'm weak haha).
I'm looking at upgrading my foil from the beginner to a more intermediate foil and I'd like to switch over to Takuma. At our size do you prefer the 1095 over the 1210? From what I gather reading you just have to go a bit faster with the 1095 and the 1210 is more for slower speeds? And of course the KD Tail seems like a must buy from everybody. Also where do you purchase the shim from to make it how you stated?
Really appreciate the help. This forum is amazing.
Looks like your question has been well answered. One point of confusion on this forum is that the title is "standup foiling" yet most of the anwers on this thread pertain to prone foiling. I really like the 1095 for prone with the KD 13.5 tail, I can stand on it barely moving, then pump into a wave as well as control some pretty heavy drops at head high which is my limit foiling. No need for 1210 at all for me, and II've pretty much stopped using the 995 since getting the 1095.
I just started winging again as the wind season is starting. I tried to go out in light to blustery conditions on a Kalama 5'10 E3 sup board as opposed to a smaller wing board around 95 liters that I prefer, and the 1095 with the 178 tail works fine while powered, but is a handful to get on foil and jibe. Just too much board/weight making the high aspect, low area very noticeable as it's effected by pitch changes more than the 995 and presumably, the 1210 which I haven't ridden. So if I were to use this bigger board for sup foiling and winging, I would for sure want a bigger foil than the 1095. I've got an old LOL 1600 that works ok, but I'd like to modernize. I use the carbon mast too, which is a bit short for winging. Maybe I'll try the NoLimitz mast/Takuma alu fuse, but I'm holding my breath for a new Takuma mast and carbon fuse as I just don't like aluminum on a foil.
I'd sum it up by saying the 1095 is the right foil for your weight prone if you have waves with decent push. Pumping it takes a less nose up and down approach (ollie) and more feet together glide and drop. And it's a bit more back foot oriented than a lot of foils out there. So if that doesn't appeal to you, the 995/1210 is a bit more front foot and mast slighty more back, and less sensitive to up and down movement. I'm betting the 1210 would ride more like your 1150?
The KD tails come with 3 shims that work great as you can use them either way for positive or negative tune.
