I agree somewhat with Chrispy, I ride my Single in about everything but if the waves are small/fast/round I switch out to a twin as it will hold better in those conditions.

Single's are pretty limited and take some getting used too... You have to surf with the wave, turn and trim when the wave allows, its a mellower style thats about connection whereas a 2-4 fin cluster will allow much more freedom as to where you can go and what you can do on the wave...

Really though, you cant go wrong with a Tak HSM or for a bit more HP the CI Mid. Ride em as a 1+2 or ride it as a single, means you can at least experiment and not be stuck with something you aren't into.

It depends what he's after. There's some good suggestions but I'd put a vote in for a Neal Purchase Jr. single, especially if he rides shortboards. You can cruise them but there also surprisingly high performance if you want to take that approach. Again they are somewhat pricey but his boards are well worth the money IMO. Surfing footage at 3:50.

The CI mid, Takayama Howard Special, Christenson C bucket or Flat Tracker are all good shouts but for something different, a Liddle hull.
I got one recently from Mike Saggus down in Ulladulla - beautiful board.

Or a Gato Heroi, Andy from wild things is a legend, either a space pig pg or an acid- depending on the waves but either way Mike or Andy will help you dial it in

As a suggestion to the original poster l, as you're buying it for your kid and he may not completely love a single fin good option to whatever you decide on to get some side bite fin plugs in it if it's a single, give him another option and a bit more range in trying things out.

Oh yeah! one of those with the e-wing and a pulled in nose is on my bucket list.......... not sure if a 5 fin speed shape with a wing is still an egg but whatever!

My absolute no1 suggestion by far would be a 7'6"-7'10" Ryan Lovelace Thicklizzy/Trimcraft Hayley Pin, best board i've ridden and seems to be the opinion of most that have them, my 7'7" is the one board i'll never sell. I did sell my 8'2" but only because it felt too close to my 7'7". The dude I sold it too absolutely LOVES it, thanks me every time I see him, he just doesn't even surf anything else anymore and he has an impressive quiver that includes Gato's, Thomas Bexton and Wegener boards... So fast and balanced and versatile. A board thats easy to surf but difficult to master with incredible range and reward...

The issue is getting one, rare as hens teeth but keep an eye on GT and I can check in with Ryan and see if they are setting up another shipment to Aus if you like?

Hey everyone. Just signed up as I've just sold my boards here in Japan and checking options for my return back in Aus. This review was great as was the list by onefin. It's given me plenty to look at. I've just sold my proctor fish and softech bomber so am thinking a Takayama or CI mid will do perfectly when I can hit some proper waves. One of my favourite boards is a single with aggressive channels in it. Sort of like having two extra fins in it....amazing what good shapers can do....

In saying that,I have much better boards to surf when the waves are less than ideal

Nah, not just for pipe. Got the same bottom and rails in a Stewart 9'0 hydro hull.

Also similar to the Waldon Mini Magic 7'6 I ride and that thing leaves some brand name long fish twins I have ridden for dead. Absolutely rocks.

The 949 comp is a bit deeper double but should behave very nice in most waves apart from maybe complete mush.

Should go good, especially on East Coat points and juicy beachies.
