Been looking at those swings onefin.

They make perfect sense for a twin fin, but were sold out.

Where do you get yours from? Their web site shop?

Been looking at those swings onefin.

They make perfect sense for a twin fin, but were sold out.

I wanted the new Keels, not available unfortunately.

Yeah mate, they're pricey but the shipping is free. They are small but hold and drive is not an issue- I have 6" single in my 8ft Gato whereas the normal recommendation is 9"

8'1" x 20&1/8" x 2&5/8" the 1999 hand shaped in WA way back in 1999. The Sunova Wavehog Mal/gun by Bert Burger. This ancestor of the eventual balsa perimeter stringer builds Bert will pioneer that Firewire will then use in their subsequent constructions.
Glassed on timber fins.
A weird Meyehofferish tail long before Meyehoffers.
Crazy nose flip.
Eps core with Balsa panel and epoxy resin lay up.

Surfboard Diaries: Mid-length Single-fin

This is a board I haven't used for a while. I bought it 10 years ago new from Bennett's. I was coming back from a shoulder reconstruction and short boards were too hard to paddle while longboards were too heavy to handle and had no give when pushing to stand up. (The pushup motion is not good for bad shoulders.)
It has quite a lot of rocker so doesn't glide in as much as I wanted and it took a few surfs to get used to, but a little weight shift forward after the bottom turn, and it gathers some speed and its beautiful. A little weight shift back and it turns on a dime, that tail works well. I haven't found a single fin that works by itself but I don't have too many. I have tried a slightly smaller centre fin and larger sides and I think they work better with that tail but the fins in the photos are the originals.
The dimensions have faded a bit but it says: Handshape M. Wilkerson 7.0 22.0 2.75 Cherry Blossom (measuring it, it looks about 21.5 wide)

Interesting. Forgot that Matt had been in NSW before coming to Qld. Don't know if you know this but Matt has an excellent shaping pedigree from Hawaii. While shaping for Beachbeat he made some great looking Larry Bertleman model twin fins as well as some great looking mid lengths and longboards. Nice guy and all is Matt.

Sooo..... sold the Keyo mini gun, and the Torq mod fish.

Both awesome boards in their own rights.

Then scored a 7'8 Walden Mini Magic second hand for a steal.

Now I usually don't go over a 7 or tops 7'2. But this board is from another dimension.

Just had the best surf of my life straight out of the box on this board. Kid you not.

IT DID.

Even at 7'8 it rode looser and more responsive than my Webber Diamond 6'10 which I thought was a special board.

2 plus 1 fins, and it went off. Floaters, near vets, full control and solid under foot, where you looked the board just followed. Super easy paddle in and wave count at least twice that of anyone else in a packed line up.

I was able to sit out further and take the waves deeper, picking off all the best ones coming through.

This ones a definite keeper, and will be the go to board for lots of different conditions.

BTW welcome back, beers still on offer.

These are a great option all-rounder mid.

Outline and rocker are almost identical to where Salty landed after years of adjustment and experimentation and what we've been currently shaping (his WAY better than mine). The Outlier is a light bellied hull vs ours are a flat tri-plane which work very similar (Lovelace is a dual concave tri-plane)

Anyways, really versatile, fun, fast and connected boards...

That Outlier isn't cheap. I always wondered why FW boards are that expensive when they pump them out by the 1000's

Supply and demand, you sell for the highest price people will pay and the market is in massive shortage atm so if anything they should be more expensive...

I'm having to wait 3-4+ months for blanks atm, crazy stuff.

Personally I'm not a fan of the materials they use, just don't like how they feel and they're a mutha f&#!er to repair, I won't touch em anymore... I'd be looking at a hand shaped PU version myself...

Good surfer rather than great, can duck dive, limited time on water because of working heaps.
So any suggestions would be much appreciated, wants a good all rounder and fun new board experience. I only foil and sup surf so haven't got a bloody clue!

A single fin not a very versatile board,the minority might disagree with that comment. I just find if the waves are not great that single fins suck...go a quad ,again my personal preference for a mid,or a two plus one would be my other preferred choice

What can I say I'm a changed man but I'm sure there are many shortboarders who just can't do the longboard jump ( it's for old fats lol ) who should get a mid length catch some waves in deadman's section and leave us Longboarders to catch them first up the point and ride right past them whoops maybe I haven't changed

I agree somewhat with Chrispy, I ride my Single in about everything but if the waves are small/fast/round I switch out to a twin as it will hold better in those conditions.

Single's are pretty limited and take some getting used too... You have to surf with the wave, turn and trim when the wave allows, its a mellower style thats about connection whereas a 2-4 fin cluster will allow much more freedom as to where you can go and what you can do on the wave...

Really though, you cant go wrong with a Tak HSM or for a bit more HP the CI Mid. Ride em as a 1+2 or ride it as a single, means you can at least experiment and not be stuck with something you aren't into.

All that eco marketing isn't cheap to produce. You need to spend a lot of money to convince people that surfboards that travel half way around the world and last no longer than a well made local board are better for tge environment.

Quads on mids for me seem to run to much for my skinny legs to stop. Like them on wider tails / more fishy boards though.

I got a few more kg I'm my kegs than you sp ,but I get what your saying

Andy I have never surfed a twinny mid,I struggle on them full stop...hence my love for a quad. Same feel,more control and I find that you can take the same lines as a single, just with more venom in the turns...again we seek different surfing feelings ....but I will always have one or two singles in my quiver for that beautiful feeling they offer on a nice wave
