I've just bought a demo Sunova dynamo and the description on the website says...have a guess? I don't believe it but maybe it paddles well and turns all right...that will be enough.

I have been experimenting a bit with this type of shape. This may be a an awesome board but in my opinion;

"It paddles like a longboard surfs like a shortboard" - Not true !! will paddle better than a short board but only a longboard paddles like a longboard.

"It handles waves from fat mushy beach breaks to steep critical reef breaks" - not true either !! Particularly if you don't spend much time in the water. If it goes well in mushy beachies, it will be a handful for a weekend warrior on a steep and critical takeoff.

Just re read my post and it may have been a bit harsh. I wasn't having a go at the board just commenting on the statements. Board is probably great for the right condition's. I'm working on a 2 board quiver. Similar shapes but 1 for small and weak waves and 1 for larger steeper waves. Same length and plan shape, just playing around with rocker and rails. I have found as I get older (and heavier) I need a couple of boards to choose from to maximise conditions whereas when I was young and fit, 1 board was all I needed.

Throw in a longboard as well and you have everything covered.

I get your point, hate the paddles like a longboard line, nothing paddles like a longboard except a longboard..

But for me a good dialled egg shape is one board that can go good in mushy beachies and reef breaks. Something like a lower volume c bucket in a 2plus 1 or Campbell bros speed egg handle regular **** East coach beachies as well as a reef pass.

On the slot machine my mate had one years and years ago, early 2000s and it was a good all rounder surfed it on a boat trip and regular beachies. Did as good as anything else like that. Probably a bit flat in the rocker dept for heaving reefs but ability was probably the biggest limiting factor in those type of waves.

On an un-related note that jogged my memory. I had a DT slider (diamond tail) 6'4" I bought used from the same guy I bought my 8' Sunova 8ball from. It was our first sales interaction and we have since bought and sold and also swapped boards with each other over the years. He's in Sydney and I'm on the Sunshine coast.
Anyway that DT slider was from Southcoast and came as a 2+1 set up. The coolest thing about that board was how it would go at my local point. The wave will give you a roll in take off that backs off before standing up again. The DT would let me do a take off that where I could run straight down the face and into the flats for a ridiculous amount of ground then turn it back straight up the face into a reo still with speed. No stalling. It had a flat bottom. Any chatter on the face and it was not happy but those delayed bottom turns into reos I still remember to this day. Sadly the model isn't even on his website any more. One of those boards you never forget.

Single concave into double with vee in the tail.

Chine rail forward blending into a tucked under towards rear. Chine edges will be a bit softer than they appear in the mock up.

Any suggestions before the planer hits the foam?

Tempted to but don't got the skill set or tools.

Got an old blank out of an old windsurfer that I could use but have decided to get 1974 to probably do it for me, or a local guy who said I could help.

The design is based on 1974 mid length that we have modified with the bevelled rails, a deeper double concave, and a rounded vee. Also took design elements from a Stewart 949 Comp that is very similar to what we have ended up with.

Construction is likely going to be EPS Epoxy with stringer or double stringer? Depends on how the shapers think the double will affect flex?

Now all I gotta do is find some extra coin........... what else can I sell....

They are US based, he's not a bad bloke for a yank ;-)

The only other guy I have found in Oz who does a similar thing is Murray Burton from Pipe Dreams with teh Pinga model but the volume is too much for me in the length I want.

Or there is also Newbey (Grant?) on East Coast that does similar.

He makes a mighty fine looking board as well, very similar to what we have come up with but a few more fin combo's to work with on the 1974 to dial it into different conditions.

Fairly sure Newby could do the same though if asked.

I know for a fact that Ron Goddard rides all his boards to make his models perfect so much so he stated making foil boards and could count on one hand how many times he had ridden a surfboard in the last year, that tells you the guy doesn't make **** boards and his workmanship is as of a very high standard.

The SS&B comes alive with active feet. Forward to trim and step back to turn. Can really lay into hard turns with the foiled and narrowed tail. Also benefits from a keel based quad set up that keeps the drive going in the turns rather than stalling.

First couple of surfs in 4-5 foot down south goodness.
Handles like a dream and way looser than I thought it would be.
Just getting used to the 2 and 1 setup, single is a raked 8 inch number with GL side bites.
For an ol' boy these days it paddles like a dream and turns on a dime.

If you can, try it as a conventional thruster set up using a small centre and larger sides. Could liven the board up even more. I have reverted to conventional FCS II fin boxes on my new mid length.

Agree Daneli, bigger side bites are good.. Never been a massive fan of the the small sides. The green Am1s are good side fin with a 5inch ish centre.

The CW 2+1 from Shapers is a good set up too. Think they still make them.

I got fired up by this thread and decided to make a mid length. Came up with a 7ft by 21 by 2.5in 42L semi-bonzer. It's a semi-bonzer because I didn't go with the deep bottom concave and just did a shallow double channel. Haven't had it in great waves but it seems to go in most conditions so I'm happy so far.

Probably marginal to be called a mid length but also did a 6ft 6in four channel twinny with trailer from the same basic file. First go at more than 2 channels and it was a work out but happy with the way it goes too.

Honest question, I know nothing.
I have a new 666 with all those fin boxes.
I've never seen another board with all of the slots filled.
I've had various advice - do I use all of them, some of them, or one of them?


I just want to be able to surf in a straight line, and steer to avoid running over people.
Or rocks.
I have no intention of attempting to surf when other people are around,
