Why do the masts have to be so long?

Several reasons.

The main one is that you want length in the mast to give you resilience to vertical movement. Everything moves up and down as you trim. With a short mast the wing pops out of the water and stalls and you crash. With a long mast you can trim up and down to your heart's (and the conditions) content and it's all good.

When you're powered or doing a carve you need length so the foil can lay over. If the mast was short as soon as you bank the board the foil is going to pop out of the water ... and you crash.

When riding through chop you can set the foil relatively deep and just cruise along and be somewhat insulated from the chop. It stops the board whacking the top of chop, and it stops the foil broaching through the front of waves as you overtake them and you crash.

So how do you know what boards would work better than others for foils? Is there a minimum of liters and board width one would want to be able to foil successfully?

Im using a AHD SL2 its around 120l and 800 wide.
Ive been out twice, the first time, the trim of the foil wasnt spot on so foiling for a consistent amount of time was .. problematic.. Second time the foil was dialed in and the major thing i took away from that session was My trimming of the foil.
Once up on the foil my adjustment of my body weight was what i learnt. Small adjustments fore and aft lowered and raised the foil... but i found it was a little bit delayed.. it didn't react instantly like if you were blasting along. Changing a foot placement only slightly affected the board ride height slower than i was used too so that took a little bit of understanding.

Next - Foil Gybing

All in all its an amazing, silent experience and one i'm looking forward to learning more about.

I think foiling is a great sport but many are thinking the same thing I am.

Well considering Foiling is everywhere i look at the moment from Windsurfing, Kiting, Stand up,Extreme Sailing series and America's cup. Considering all of the big brands are embracing foiling by either making or adding foils to their line up eg. Neilpryde, StarBoard Naish AND most of the top guys have given it a go in the last six months with zero negativity towards it, the attitude of the "many are thinking the same thing" needs to change quicksmart.

I feel the closed minded attitude is from people that haven't tried it.

I think decapitations will be rare events, probably only one decapitation every 5 years or so, so it depends whether its your head or a loved one's? Whats probably more likely to happen is depilation with a lot of people losing their hair while Foiling, so this could be a serious problem with maybe 1 in 5 being affected? My advice would be that people who like a full set of thick hair should probably avoid Foiling. Also if you are particularly unlucky or accident prone like Elmo, you could be the one decapitation in every 5 years?

Thanks for your insight on depilation hazards Joe. I guess I'm safe to get one eh! Now I just need to find a "Delta" version for sailing our local waters

Looking at the NP Alufoil i wonder how the trimm will work with a board with a regular positioned tuttlebox.
The Strut/mast seems straight and not inclined, distance strut to frontwing is only about 100mm / 4".
So imo the straps have to be positioned quite to the back to get the rear foot behind the wing to trimm it properly.
Looking at theWindfoil or Horue the frontwing seems to be far more forward under the board.

For this reason i think the straps on the JP Foilboard are positioned quite rearward in relation to the tuttlebox, compared to e. g. a slalomboard.

Looking at the foil boards they look remarkably like formulae boards at least width/length wise plus will have deep Tuttle etc ... anyone have a view re using old formulae board for fooling ?

An friend of mine, started up foiling, using af F2 formula.it was to big, and now using af Horue foilboard.
I am using af Tabou Speedster 89, but find it to big too.Waiting to order a foilboard.

RS:X Convertible appears slower on foil than planning old RSX and convertible using standard fin.... about 1;30 in video:

Possibly having to use a heavy cambered rig in light, non white cap conditions, might be the issue. Or perhaps foil on a 7.8m and RS:X on a 9.5m, thoughts?

and i was even wondering if cheaper breakable foils were not more logical
let's say one quarter the price and if you hit something, it breaks

I reckon that's a good idea. Wouldn't be that hard to design a shear pin into the mast, with a pivot pin above, if you get my drift. some sort of "stopper" would be needed behind the mast to stop it hitting the tail of the board when it swings back.

Or a Bungy cord that goes down the centre of the mast, assuming it has a hollow pocket. Similar to the tethers on F1 wheels.

The Neilpryde RS:ONE foil is made of aluminium for the mast and G10 for the wings to cut down the price.

they are on their way and with a choice of freeride or speed wings.

Actually you've got one too many zeros, it's more like $200 USD, and they have them for both PB and Tuttle boxes. But still, all added up, it's still to rich for my blood, keeping current with boards and sails is hard enough.

If you were going to decapitate a swimmer, wouldn't it be with a conventional vertical fin? Most people sail with a fin over a foot long, so if it was going to happen, it already would have.

If someone is lurking in the water, in a vertical position with their head a foot under the surface, I'd say they're not that healthy already. Besides, leading edge of any foil or fin is rounded, I've only ever cut myself on the trailing edge of a fin.

I cut my shin by the leading edge of my 34cm fin 2 years ago. My board started to cavitate and I couldn't correct it, and couldn't unhook out of the harness because I was leaning out over the rail so far and didn't have the leverage I needed to unhook, while the board was cavitating. So I just let my butt skim on top of the water to slow me down and as I unhooked when I regained leverage , and took my back foot out of the strap and then sure enough my shin was in the water as the board was still moving forward and nicked up my shin by my fin. Still got the dent and scar in my shin bone to prove it. I didn't think to sniff my fin to see if it smelled fleshy

Lesson learned, never put any of your limbs in harms way of that fin.

Really starting too feel comfortable Foiling.

The Angles you can Sail on it are just RIDICULOUS!
