How can that be true?
We look at the world and assume it is an ideal place. It isn't.
We look at our use of fossil fuels and think 'we shouldn't have used them'. As if that was even an option. The only reason we have a developed world now is because we have had access to cheap and easy to use fuel. Everything in our society relies on this.
So you cannot really look back and say anyone was at fault for doing this. It is what was done and for a good reason.
What also is the defective bit? Human nature creates wars, it creates all sorts of problems. But this is normal human behavior.
I remember one of my grandmothers telling me 20 years ago that she felt sorry for my generation because of all the issues in the world. I think she was just watching the news too much and thought the world was falling apart, and forgetting that her generation went through world wars and the depression and nowhere near the healthcare we have now.
What's the reason people think the world is defective? They concentrate too much on the bad news on TV.
But I guess it is easy to pick a generalised scape-goat and blame them, but otherwise it is just nonsense. Just like kids blaming 'boomers' for their problem, it's just laziness to blame someone else without getting off your arse and doing anything about the problems you perceive.
I wish I could remember Tim's exact words, they were far more eloquent than mine. His point is that every generation has left a worls/environment that is generally better for their children. You only have to look at old family photos to see that this is the case. But now, many of the current adult generation, couldn't care less. I wonder how many of the selfish people don't have kids.
I think we have done another cycle into 'greed is good'. There seems to be less stigma to people making lots of money and no real concern about how they made so much money.
My own observation lately is that 'only fans models' are offering advice on things such as the cost of living and housing affordability. Then there are articles about relationships supposedly written by prostitutes. For those that are not aware, only-fans models, well at least the successful ones, are making bucket loads of money. One of them was quoted to be making $170k a month and then offered her advice on why others in her generation were stupid for wasting their money and not being able to afford to buy a house. Crazy! As for prostitues offering advice on relationships, that's just silly.
I think in the eagerness to get people to accept everyone else, people have forgotten reality. Do we want our daughters/sisters to be on;ly-fans models? Not me.
But I would disagree about leaving or not leaving the planet better for the next generation. Aside from things we cannot control, I think most people are leaving it in a better state.
I suspect every generation gets to a point where they think they have failed the next, but what were they to do that was different?
Getting back to things like the holes in the ozone layer. It's not like people discovered the effect and ignored it completely. They attempted to solve the problem, despite the economic cost. This is pretty much the way everything is going, but its only really possible once we have reached a certain level. For instance, if you think you can move to renewable wind and solar energy to replace fossil fuels, you have to recognise that we would never have gotten to the point we can do those things without using fossil fuels themselves.
Was it a bad thing to use fossil fuels to get there? Nope, it's just part of modernisation.
Mind you, I am certain that there are a tonne of kids in these younger generations that want to blame everyone else for everything else. I don't know if its accurate, but I can't remember my generation blaming the ones before me for things, but instead just accepting them and trying to make things better.
