As a small aside, the 10% of males who have a degree of red/green colour blindness, can find those colour graded charts a complete pain in the backside. I often rely on the different contrast levels, not hues, to determine which is which. Old fashioned black and white graphs using different symbols are much easier and clearer for me, even if they are not as pretty.

Species Distribution Models have coloured heat maps and many journals publish in colour these days. It must be hard for colourblind people. I'm surprised they don't have cross-hatch intensity as an accessibility option.

Yeah that's the chart, only goes a few degrees in each direction. If it went all the way down to zero, which a rational person might expect blue to represent, then every year for the entire chart would be the same pale colour in the middle. So as you said "nothing to see here"

Thanks for noticing. I throw the term out every now and then to see if anyone will respond. I am learning that on some forums you can just ignore others and then throw out your own opinion to get attention. It works well.

What do I do when a friend or a relative starts talking about these sorts of conspiracies? Well, I initially hear them start, and then I try and change the topic. By now I can generally predict where they are going to go and what they are going to say, so I politely shut it down without making it really obvious I am shutting that topic down. By bringing up something more interesting that we have in common it avoids the conflict and I know I am never going to change their opinion.

On the other hand I have a friend who is pretty clever. He has read a lot and is pretty observant and I enjoy having conversations with him. When he brings up something that conflicts with what I think, I know that he will provide background and information about why he thinks what he thinks and we discuss it. It becomes an actual conversation and he even listens, and sometimes refutes, my point of view. At the end of the conversation I feel that we have both seen a different point of view. Sometimes my opinion changes, sometimes it doesn't.

This one is about the actual idiots that think that things like hurricanes can be controlled by humans.

It is crazy. A sci-fi dream that people think up because they have no understanding of the physical world around them, Then they post something and see other people with the same brain-farts and then think they are onto something. Social media is making it easy for someone to post something and find someone that agrees with them. Whether it is only 1 in 10,000 that agree with them, they will see that reply and think that they are correct.

You understand the wind. Well, you should as most of us do after sailing for so long. There is nothing mysterious about it. To think that amount of energy can be controlled by humans is ambitious. To think that way is going to set you on one path. You have to then turn around and think "well if people can affect/create that, then they can affect everything". If you genuinely believe that humans can affect everything, then you may as well give up as nothing could change it. Nothing. If someone had that genuine level of power, nothing you or I wanted to do about it would matter.

Or you could say "well, that is nonsense, but maybe humans can affect other normal things, but these hurricane nutters are just idiots".

I don't know if I have a soul. That is something we will never know. But what I do know is that in real-life there are people that will run you over to get what they want and there are nice people that will help someone out. I think it is good to be the second type of person.

Saying "nar-nar he said directly hit" seems a bit of a..... strawman pedant if I may be so bold..

If the argument is saying the eye must pass exactly over the zip code area then there would be many, many places in hurricane and cyclone areas that would fit that definition, but the fact not be particularly special. Tampa Bay has been directly impacted by many hurricanes in the last 100 years.

When I read the ABC I assumed it was a mis-quote. Earlier in the week the reporting I saw was that this could be the strongest cyclone to hit the Florida west coast in over 100 years. Not the only, but the biggest. I applied critical thinking and assumed an ABC journo had quoted it wrong, not that is was a defendable quote. Although I also understood the general concensus elsewhere is that a changing climate will bring fewer hurricanes and cyclones, but that when they do occur they will be larger and more intense. And the quote certainly didn't say that.

Anyways, it seems that neither happened. The centre didn't directly pass over Tampa Bay and after it hit the coast it wasn't the strongest in 100 years. Not to downplay the impact, loss of live and destruction it did cause (and may continue to cause).

I've not seen the clip. Also not sure what point your making.

I am also no expert in Carribean hurricanes, but Google tells me the only hurricanes to be at Cat 5 when they hit the US coast were Michael in 2018, Andrew in 1992 (both of which hit north and south of Tampa Bay although not directly exactly at Tampa Bay), then back in 1969, 1935...

So they are pretty rare, but not unprecendented.

I also assume that recording central windspeeds in 1935 was not quite as accurate as it it today, and that the category scale of hurricanes and cyclones is a bit simplistic and doesn't necessarily convey the destructive power or affect they may have.
