You've made a jolly good hash of the quotes and who said what. I use the exact same username anywhere I post except Surfermag which was the first forum I posted on and have a different username. A few forums that I post on I've actually been posting on them longer than you so I'm hardly a troll.

Yes I'm going to have another crack at the 3D glass, I think I have a method which will improve the process, we shall see.

Hey Roy, did you ever receive any comment back from Geoff McCoy about using his gullwing fin design? I recall from somewhere you contacted him. Would be really keen to hear from any single fin McCoy riders who have used both the original McCoy gullwing and your version. Interesting to hear people's perception of the gullwing not having drive; I would agree that in the Astron Zot (7'1") it is not drivey but so loose and fast, frictionless almost. In the 9'2" McCoy allround longboard though it has heaps of hold but allows easy turning if the wave has grunt. Not so good in small slow surf but it isn't a pivot fin anyway, and the board isn't a log either.........

to compare the GF properly,a surfer needs the crinkle cut and straight edge from Roy and the GM as well.Mik will have those 3 soon.

Here's the 66 model with the deck glass applied, things went a lot more smoothly this time, as it turns out the main problem last time was due to darts being cut, this time we didn't cut any except on the cloth below the masking line which is removed anyway.

The 66 is glassed now and progressing well. will have some pics later today.

We were up at 4am for a dawnie at the point last week to test the 16 model orange machine but at the last minute couldn't find a hex key for the fin so had to pull the pin on the mission. Cyclone swell possibly coming up in a couple of weeks though.

Dave I had no direct response from Geoff but did get a rather incoherent letter from his lawyer. The bottom line is that I'm free to make the Gull Wings ( in spite of their demand that I cease to do so) as the fins have been in the public domain for decades, and I made significant changes to the fin but I did agree not to use Geoff's name in connection with my fins.

Apparently he was livid and I was banned from the Geoff McCoy Rider's group on facebook because of my Gull Wings.... even though the entire GW project was started by one of the members who asked me to make them. I thought it was the right thing to do to give Geoff credit for the original GW but there's no accounting for human behaviour. Part of the lawyer's rave was to let me know that Geoff disagrees with the use of fins resembling gull's wings on any but his own boards, and to tell me that the bumpy leading edge is wrong... I must remember to hire a lawyer next time I want to make a surfboard design statement lol.

Part of my response to the lawyer was to state that in my opinion I have better vibes towards Geoff than any lawyer ever born, and that I disagreed with him taking Geoff's money and encouraging his anger on such a futile mission as trying to stop me making a few fins.

The BLEF gull model is a different thickness and foil as well as the leading edge variation and its got a different size base hasn't it?

Looks like there should be a "bit" of swell bludgeoning NZ for a proper testing of the board/boards. Charge those camera batteries and don't forget your fin keys.

Ok I got some head high (on the sets) 17 second period cyclone Pam waves this saturday. The banks were crap, and there was a cross swell and light onshore. I also had a fever from an infection so felt sub par.

Anyway here are the first impressions:

1) The board is bright, can be seen miles away.

2) Paddling is epic, it takes little effort to keep a high paddle speed up and digging in hard gets even more speed.

3) Wave catching capability is very good indeed.

4) Rolling under is adequate but bot quite as good as a thinner longer board, the hand grip on the rails is ok but again not quite as good as a thinner board. Not really an issue for huge waves as they are not being rolled anyway, and workable for an all rounder.

5) Ride wise the board has no vices and does what it's ordered to do. Feels very 'loose' and free running, seems quite willing to get some good speed up. (9 inch spitfire felt very nice, definitely low drag and responsive.

The thickness (3.5") felt ok after a few waves but seemed a bit thick at first. Overall the board felt pretty short and will take a few sessions to adjust to. Keeping in mind that i haven't ridden a board down in the 9 foot range for about 10 years.

Weight at 23 pounds feels good though on the light side, probably due to the shorter length and high buoyancy.

As a board for very large waves I have no doubt that it will work but I don't see any reason to go so short.

More testing will be done, the surf is now out of control and I'm laid up with an infection, board is now with my son at Mount Maungabui as he's getting in the water more often than I am at present. unfortunately no chance to get to some of the tucked away spots which will handle the swell. Cyclones never seem to stay out East like they used to in the 70's... back then they'd track further East by a long way and we'd get offshores and clean pumpoing swell for a week at least. Ironically the West coast has had consistent clean swell throughout all this cyclone hype so should have gone West but I was sucked in by the long period.

I have five 11 foot blanks with custom rocker and deck profile arriving this week, might as well cut the crap and go to the real gun zone... I'll be going about half an inch thinner on the 11 footers, and glassing with 10oz so they'll be a lot quicker to make. The 11 footers will be more up Camel's street I think.
