so I'm now waiting on a Miller Waterskate to come up from the smoke...

That was the first board I brought when I moved over here in 2000 - it was a magical board - gave it to a mate a few yrs later and always regretted parting with it - I even tried at one point to re-claim it - but he would have a bar of it !

Yep Ted..how many times have I done that..like Blues losses..tooo many

If it doesn't suit me will let you know...and maybe you can be ..back to the future !

what size did you get? Not sure you will want to part with it I think mine was a 6'4" from memory. On my first surf on it out at the Bower I ran over shag rock and destroyed it! Almost cried. What a mess - knocked all 3 fins out. Once she was fixed up she went well though

Ouchhh...You wont believe me but my mate who's getting a SubX just sold a miller much the same as your oldie..6'2" Waterskate.

The one I've got coming is 6'10"..so a far bit bigger to compensate for age

Thanks - but not for me. Seems he does not like the PM

"One can only speculate as to how Abbott, Hockey, Andrews, Dutton et al are able to go home at night, to kiss their wives and sit down to dinner, and to behave as though they have done a decent days work. Most of them claim to be good, upstanding, christian men too. As if the church wasn't in enough trouble.

I am currently ashamed to be an Australian. In many respects. Where is the outrage? Why is there no marching on the streets with civil disobedience? Or, do we in fact now have the government we deserve? Shame Abbott, shame."

Ha ha ha lol lol.. yep that's me cackling me old head off 'cause of the number of wave I caught yesterday. You'd normally think a 62yo, 100kg, 6' guy on a 7' board in 2+ft of surf = frustrating session, well not on this baby Bloody thing picked up everything I paddled for. Lets face it it was no epic session but you know those days sun out, off shore 5 guys out & you're just ball bagging around & you endup having a great 2hrs in the water, well this was one of those days. Take off easy drive along the wave get the odd turn in bit of hit the lip & in Tattoos voice from Fantasy Island " da glide boss, da glide",
can't wait to get it into something bigger. Ha ha ha.. sorry I'm doing it again.

Hey Uncle Thirsty, sounds like these boards live up to the claims. I was going to order a Mccoy pot belly nugget around 7'- I love Geoff's boards- have an 8'2" nugget, a 7' Astron Zot, 7' Rogers shaped nugget and a 9'2' allround mal- but being from the land of full, fat waves (Sth Oz Middleton) find that the narrower nosed Nuggets/Zots have a lot of rocker which tends to push water when you weight the front foot. I've a 7s Superfish xl 8' which I love, but the length can get in the way..... Have you ridden any other 7'ish midlengths to which you can compare? Grant's website says the rocker is super flat on the SubX, so perhaps the photos exaggerate the nose rocker.... The SubX looks like the perfect midlength for my conditions but I'm aware that sometimes claims for boards sound too good to be true- I've watched too many young blokes on super short/wide/fat stubby boards that are supposed to be longboard alternatives struggle to catch waves then thrash around trying to find pockets of power.

Hey Dave,
whatever you do don't show any doubt about Grant's claim that it "paddles like a longboard and..." or you'll be in the cacca!

P.S. Grant's a great shaper (I've had V-skate, powerglide, custom egg - possible precursor to SubX and a F-skate from him).

Hey Cuttlefish, I take your point, and have nothing but the greatest respect for the likes of Grant, Geoff McCoy, Maurice Cole etc. I wasn't having a go at Grant, just that quite a few shapers claim 'paddles like a longboard etc'. The reason for my post was that in the case of the SubX, this claim seems to be true (testimonials like those above and on Grant's website) hence my growing interest in the board. I really like Grant's no BS approach to shaping functional boards- love his website! When you live in SA the cost of freight adds considerably to the cost of a board- not to mention almost inevitable damage from transport companies- so decisions on which board to order need to be carefully made! Must admit that the SubX has me really excited though. Love to see some video footage (or even photos) of the board in action. I believe that genuine questions re board performance, broached with respect, and not bagging anyone, should be what forums like these are about. I think you would remember the McCoy trainwreck on another site a couple of years ago! A pity as I love reading considered debate on board design.

Dave, I suppose the "paddle like a longboard' thing is a bit like "how long is apiece of string" & in surfings case I think it's more like "how does that 6' 7' 8' 9' board paddle for you" everyones different & when you surf them in various conditions you feel different about them. As i said above I've currently got 7'5" powerglide, which I call my Powerskate & an 8' powerglide. After the surf I had yesterday I can easily say that the Subx would paddle as easily as my 8', but then again if it had been say 5'-6' I'd prob say MOST definitely because being a bit shorter it would prob be easier/better on the paddle out, know what I mean. But I havn't done that yet so....!. If your talking about float yeah I'd say bout the same but the Subx is/will be more maneuverable.
If you need to get over long flat sections hard to say, that could come up to drivers ability as well as the boards dims/shape. I did have a Nugget few years ago but honestly I can't really compare 'cause I was 10yrs younger (****). To sum it up.. at my age & fitness I'm extremely happy with the Subx's paddle & maneuverability. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but Grant's boards really do go as advertised, give him a buzz & have a yak he'll sort it & i'm pretty sure you'll be happy with the result (if you get one, ha).

Good point, my 7' McCoy paddles reasonably well on the flats, even with quite a bit of rocker, but not as well as my 9'2" However the big wide thick (17") arse rises with the wave as you paddle into it, and this combined with the single fin means drag is way less than a thruster, so it catches waves really easily. The narrower tail on the 9'2" means that you need to paddle the board hard to get it up to speed, then let momentum carry you into your popup.

My reference to the "paddles like a longboard" thing was kind of Fawlty towerish.
As in "whatever you do, don't mention the war. I mentioned it once and I think I got away with it."
On Grant's website it shows its a prickly subject as he refers to the claim being questioned on Realsurf forum.
I wasn't taking you to task the discussion just reminded me of the subject on his Subx write up.
That paddles like a longboard, turns like a shortboard one is a favourite of many shapers.

Understand completely Cuttlefish, have seen Grant's website. It could be argued Geoff McCoy would feel the same way when you see the number of wide arsed thick nugget copies out there, although I think most of the similar planshaped boards tend to feature quadfin setups and concaves vs the loaded dome. Some shapers pay homage to Geoff on their websites by acknowledging his design innovations when discussing their own shapes.

You did mate & after speaking with Mollydog & Grant himself the deal was done, wanted something different just to try to mix things up.

I've only ever surfed longboards & never ridden anything smaller than a 9'3 so this will certainly be different & a challenge but don't want to die wondering.

Awesome Vanders, Congrats. Something about this board that I love. Doing a bit of reading on Grants website sounds like a guy who truly understand shaping and has an intimate relationship with it. Without sounding corny.
