Scotty's getting back out there.
I haven't surfed an SB since G-Land 95 - yep, it's been that long.
So I am looking at getting an LB very soon to enjoy this coming summer.
I thought the 666 would get me out there but for several reasons it hasn't worked out.
Just looking forward to sitting out there catching a few, burn a few cals and escaping the rat race for and hour or two. I live 2k from my local beach so should be out there most days.
So the question is do I go for a custom to suit my weight (125kg) or go a stock board.

Btw how much do stock boards go for ?

reckon it'd be around the 800 mark for a good quality pre-love

Scotty a stock board is way cheaper than a 666 so go big

Easy go custom 100%,speak to long term sharper about what YOU want out of the board and the type of waves you intend to surf it.
One thing I would highly reckoned is stay well clear of HP or Logs,go for and all rounder with 1 + 2 fin set up.

9.6 x 23 x 3 1/4 I'm thinking but talk to a shaper.

Scotty, I am 112kg and have a McT Fireball Evolution 9'1" x 2 7/8 x 22" in SLX construction and I think it's a little under-done for me - from memory, it's 66lt volume. For me, I'd go a 9'4" x 3" x 22" next time - or something in Epoxy.

Having said that, I also surf a 7'3" 7S SuperFish II in X2 (epoxy) which is 53lt volume - but I tend to surf this in fast beach breaks...

A lot depends on your (paddle) fitness... which obviously will improve over time.

yep....+1

but my only thought was maybe go a bit wider and possibly a 1/4 inch thicker, youll want all the flotation you can.. ...

i agree avoid a log or HP, you just want an allrounder, big wide nose, reasonably pulled in tail and hard rails in the back bit of it. and id say 2+1 but try it with a nice big single fin 2.
and good on ya for getting back out there....

A 10 footer I reckon. Look for a 2nd hand Bic, Southpoint or NSP. Something as close to indestructable as you can find. That way you can get back into it without the worry of bashing a newie up.

It's not just paddle fitness, it's also regaining that ability to pop up as quickly as you can and when you do pop up, you need need to have that sense of balance that probably started to desert you 15000 schooners ago, luckily the 666 has probably helped you keep the balance thing good and strong.

Trust me, I've been there and in most respects, I'm still there

The wider the better, the longer the better, 24" x 10' min. Bigger if you can.

And don't ignore the soft tops where you're starting again, there are plenty of guys in my local club who, when it's really small and full, compete every month on soft tops, granted they,re the upmarket surftech soft tops, but soft tops nonetheless.

Scotty my mate Dave would be around your size , and with a dicky hip .

He surfs an old all rounder 9 ft 6 x 3 1/2 x 24 with a big fat nose and thruster set up , and seems to have lots of fun . It's pretty much the board SP described . He has only surfed about 40 times but seems to have a great time on his old board . .

He Is a bit tougher then me surfs in a spring suit while I am rugged up in steamer / heated vest / gloves and booties . . Makes me look a bit soft .

Good to hear you are back in the real world Scotty.....I would recommend you go as much volume as you can....make life as easy as possible whilst you get back into the groove then you can wind it back later on. Don't go dropping in on yr mates with the 2035 numberplate tattooed on them they might end yr comeback before it takes off !

How tall are you Scotty if your 4 foot and 125 kgs then 10 footer to big If your 6 footish then I think 10 foot 23 1/4 by 3 1/4 would be perfect dont know how much you wanna spend but I am thinking redline. In the meantime start practicing pop ups when ever you can

Yep i agree, no points around Scotty, so id guess mostly be surfing 2ft, 6 second nor east windswell on ****ty little sandbanks... Thats what we usually get in Summer.

and IMO... 10's dont really seem to suit the shorter steeper waves, id be going 9'6 or 9'4 X 23 1/2 - 23 3/4 by 3 1/3, and get a big 20 inch nose, your betting getting the volume in the wider nose or making the board wider than going longer, longer makes it harder to surf IMO. Longer turniiing radius, isnt great in short beachies.
A wide nose will make it stable and catch waves easily cause the volume is under your chest and in front of you. youll get more volume by going a 1/4 inch wider than going a 6-10 inches longer.

In my humble opinion if you are 125 kgs 6,2 it aint gonna make much difference whether you have 9 or 10 foot under you in beachies just make sure it has some lift in the nose

I got a mate around Scotty's size and his longboard is 10 ' and he rides it everywhere. If were me I'd be looking for a second hander to muck around on before shelling out on something serious.
I got a 10 and I'd never sell it. I wouldn't worry too much about 3 fins either. A singlefin is fine.

Guys, he's 6'2" and a half, I imagine there's a couple of meat pies he'd like to dice.

He gets on anything under 90cc of volume and it don't matter none if the wave is hollow, fat, big, little or anything in between, his wave entry will be too late.

I see it all the time down at Manly, guys my age that surf heaps better than me, weigh 20kgs less and I'm beating them to waves every time. Even when I'm 5 metres out on the shoulder just looking at them to see what they do, I can still often give a few power strokes to get the wave when I see them sliding down the back.

The difference is plain to see when you're all sitting out the back, they're all siting in water up to their waist bands whist even my arse hole is high and dry.

Take a look at these really hot riders on logs that are doing incredible things up on the nose of these razor thin boards, throwing them around all over the place. Keep and eye on them as they're sitting out the back, even they are usually high and dry.

They're not like us, they're still young and not carrying any baggage, it's just bone and muscle, all they need to do is combine what youth has given them with a good sense of balance, a bit of practice and a lot of stoke, and they can do anything. Us pricks really need to work for it.

It reminds me of something I read recently.

"a 6 pak on a skinny guy is like tits on a fat chick. It don't count"

Scotty, try and borrow a board or 2.
