More than 70 firefighters were called to the Maroubra Seals Sports Club at 7.25pm Friday as the fire took hold, with staff and patrons forced to evacuate the six-storey building.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said two people were treated for minor injuries. While part of the building's roof collapsed, the building is structurally sound.

General manager Peter Reid believed the fire was the result of sauna patrons who had previously been warned against the practice. "The fire started in the sauna. I'm of the opinion it started by people putting things on the sauna - eucalyptus oil - which they have been told not to do," he said.

"People just can't be told - even thought there's signs and everything else.

"That's the end of the sauna. There won't be any more at Maroubra Seals."

Names are Ok its not local to me anymore. Its One Mile at Anna Bay. Would be one of my favourite places.

Used to go in a surf comp there every year in May always a hoot.
