But - I'm not sure I understand the hypothesis. Why would the middle point of the string be higher ? Would it not be lower if the ground curved between the ends ?


So anyway, I just been to Bunnings and I got myself a length of string 40,000 km long. It was the last one they had, on special. I tied one end to a pebble on the beach and stretched the other end out, 40,000km away.

I can confirm two things :
(a) At the end of the 40,000km I was back at the same pebble the first end was tied to.
(b) I am now walking back to the middle to measure the height. It is along way to walk, about half-way back around the world.

No need for string. Stand at the waters edge at Dutch Inn, can you see Rottnest Island? Walk up the hill, can you see it now?

Your proof assumes light travels in a straight line. Not near the water it doesn't, refracts in layers of air, sometimes Rottnest hovers above the water.

I haven't been able to figure out the relevance of 2.08, but I reckon you are correct. If the Earth was flat we would only need Pythagoras' theorem (3,4,5 triangle), instead we had to wait 300 years for Eratosthenes.

To create heat would require friction, not simply balanced stresses. So long as the supporting beams remain strong you're in no danger of faling into a volcano

The earth was built by the Magratheans

well I guess it would create a disc if it was spinning fast enough, a disc with a bulge in the middle. But then accretion would be problematic. It would need to accrete first then start spinning, to the point where the out region is almost getting flung off. Don't think we'll ever see a world like that.

I think your Ikea instructions for the assembly of your earth are incorrect. It notes that there are side effects of gravity resulting in heat. Do not store your earth near anything inflammable.

I had to think about that for a while, but over the course of 50km cogitating, it came to me. Polarised gravity.

It's why you can't re-use your 25km length of Bunnings string to measure how far down it is off the edge, as well as how curved it isn't.

The string just gets sucked back towards the middle and won't dangle.
