Yay, arguing with PM33 about the world being flat. It's going to be a productive day today.
But - I'm not sure I understand the hypothesis. Why would the middle point of the string be higher ? Would it not be lower if the ground curved between the ends ?
So anyway, I just been to Bunnings and I got myself a length of string 40,000 km long. It was the last one they had, on special. I tied one end to a pebble on the beach and stretched the other end out, 40,000km away.
I can confirm two things :
(a) At the end of the 40,000km I was back at the same pebble the first end was tied to.
(b) I am now walking back to the middle to measure the height. It is along way to walk, about half-way back around the world.
