I was thinking about this topic in the water today.(not much else going on) Anyone with minimal surf knowledge can snake a bloke and grab a wave. What do you get. You score a wave that if your lucky you might remember until you get back out to the line up. But what do you rob from the young girl learning or the grom the old bloke having a go. You may be taking from them a wave that lasts all week. The best wave they have had. The stoke is yours to share. Pass the plate of rissoles around the table and let all share the spoils and enjoy the stoke I say. Snake the snakes enter a paddling battle with those who like to battle but leave a few so the plate can be passed around.

Wish there were more people with this attitude. Nice one.

Definatly pays to approach each surf with an open mind, the A-hole surfers are probably agro before every surf and they can keep that attitude, bewilders me how people can live there life like that?

Treat people how they want to be treated. I dont mind a bit of mind games with someone who wants to play them (snaking, paddling 30m to try and get to a peak you are on after getting one or paddling at one from the out side like they are gonna drop in) but also enjoy surfing with people who just enjoy surfing.

It would never cross my mind to snake, drop in or play games with someone who just happens to be in the same area. Usually you can suss it out with a simple hello or smile, you will know that quickly what type of surfer they are.

Hold no grudges and enjoy yourself above all else I reckon, its just too much fun to worry about other people. Come up with a strategy to deal with all types and you will be unfazed.

PS. The paddle battles with a serial snaker or drop in are good to see where your fitness is at ha ha nothing better than beating someone to the punch that wants to be a hog

I snuck out for a quick session closer to home earlier in the week on one of those nice light offshore mornings. I was in the water for about an hour when someone else rocked up, he paddled out and sat about fifteen metres on the inside of me, I say hi but no response. There were plenty of waves and I was sitting just off the peak as most of the peak ones sectioned just after the drop and were not makable. So a set comes and him being on the inside paddles for the first one, I sit back and watch him eat it on the drop then I take the second wave. This went on for the next few sets until he let the first one go which I caught. Paddling back out I see him take off from where I was sitting, he makes the drop, bottom turns then kooks it and falls off letting out a very loud f@rrrrk, followed by many more f and c words as he paddled out again. This guy was just so angry, there was no way he was enjoying himself. Maybe he was pissed that it was twice as crowded as he was hoping for, after all there were two of us out there. I don't mind a chat when someone else is around but this guy didn't even make eye contact once the whole time.

I left him to it after about half an hour.

Surfing Rule #402:

Swearing loudly disguises all Kookery.
