TimKay, obviously you weren't loved enough as a child, either that or you got your bad attitude from being dropped on your head. Clearly you are not a nice guy and guess what? If you came to the 'ski fields' as you call them, you would get bossed and put in the white room very quickly by me or any other expert snowboarder. i guess you dont know what that means so maybe google it. As for 'ski fields'. I havent ever skied in a field myself but that sounds like it could be fun. Do I need special 'grass skis' for this most interesting activity you speak of? Guess what back at ya, I wouldn't miss you either. I don't surf to be around ignorant people like you, I do it because I love the sport and I enjoy being out there in the ocean with my friends. If you have nothing better to do than play about on the net trying to offend people then maybe you should take a look at yourself mate.

Interesting thing is that there have been 3 people posting in this thread who I definitely would never want to surf with. However, the vast majority have understood my point and contributed valid points to what has been a very interesting conversation.

In terms of my friend not knowing the rules, I genuinely assumed he knew all along about dropping in. Obviously it turned out he was oblivious and I was surprised that he had not educated himself as I had done. Still, he's a really good bloke and I put it down to naievity on his part. He is a beginner after all, and I can assure you he learned the hard way and will not make that mistake again. We all make mistakes in life guys, don't be haters.

Absolutely. Your earlier posts complaining about people being assholes now carry zero credibility!

I hope we get a few waves soon, its pretty clear to me that some of you guys are in desperate need of a break from the internet...

Was like Farmer Wants a Wife but worse, maybe Surfer Wants a Gobby. Sad how much of a business this sport has become. I preferred it before it was even a sport.

I surf to chill out not to compete, it's the whole reason I travel to get wet. I ****ing hate Perthwits. And you can include Margies in that too, the stoke and soul has gone. Just a bunch of ****s trying to prove how hard they are.

It's amazing the different attitudes in certain areas, one flat spell saviour that I go to is pretty much locals only, very hard to access and no other waves around when it's working, but I tell ya what you'll never meet a better bunch of blokes to surf with. Constant banter, hooting and no hassling.

Getting out of the water feeling stoked and restored is so much better than feeling like an angry, hard ****.

^^^ I havn't seen Farmer wants a wife, so I couldn't comment. Only that it doesn't sound like it has any surfing in it or the beautiful scenery Surfhouse has...I'm not into competitive surfing either, but I can still appreciate watching talented surfers even if they're wearing a coloured rashie. There are Perthwits & then there are people there that I call friends & family. A few too many to lump them all in the same basket & Margs has always had its Ego trippers. But it also still has its awesome people too. Even though the place has changed so much since I lived there, I love going back.

Totally agree with the last 2 comments & its something I do regularly. Only I wouldn't consider the spots locals only or hard to get to...have a good one mate.

I'm curious which ski field sporto was born at and where he's a local? 'Cause surfing localism has got nothing on mountain village localism. You can move to a mountain village as a child but unless you were born there you're never a local. Even your kids will only be half locals. You've got to have generations behind you to truly be an old school local. Applies to Europe, Japan, even older North American towns. Particularly Europe.

Given sporto's command of English I doubt he's from Europe or Japan or New Zealand. American or Canuck, sporto?

He failed to educate himself and copped abuse for it, I don't really see the problem. If someone went round a round about the wrong way and hit your car I'm sure you'd be all smiles and understanding...

Ha ha ha ha
Cheers for the health enquiries but I can assure you I don't have any worrying head injuries. Unless I rolled into my local with a carload full of kooks and paddled straight to the inside. Then I'd be worried about getting dropped on my head
But I guess that doesn't happen at the ski fields
Speaking of skiing, I'm sure Sporto would get plenty of ski time sitting up front in the car in between his two expert snowboarding mates on his way to the ski fields.

Kala sounds kinda thug-like, but he's right - respect = safety

I think the locals thing is taken way too heavy. Surely the idea of NOT being a local just because you weren't born in that exact area is a bit too far fetched. I think the ocean is for everyone to share and should be treated with the utmost respect with well mannered surfers. I'm no professional myself, I learn to be better every single surf, I watch good surfers for tips, I enjoy introducing myself to a new surfer out in the water I haven't seen before and I certainly travel from about 5 or 6 beaches seeing which one is the best or least crowded. So guess I'm not a local because I live in the same town and surf at different beaches from time to time?

I was thinking about this topic in the water today.(not much else going on) Anyone with minimal surf knowledge can snake a bloke and grab a wave. What do you get. You score a wave that if your lucky you might remember until you get back out to the line up. But what do you rob from the young girl learning or the grom the old bloke having a go. You may be taking from them a wave that lasts all week. The best wave they have had. The stoke is yours to share. Pass the plate of rissoles around the table and let all share the spoils and enjoy the stoke I say. Snake the snakes enter a paddling battle with those who like to battle but leave a few so the plate can be passed around.

I find that it's not that surfers are unfriendly, it's just that people are not friendly, more indifferent. I understand the local thing from both sides, nothing like on long weekend having a- hole surfers drive all over the vegetation, leave rubbish and generally not give a care about another mans back yard, and I find surfers to be on par with the off road crowd.
