No it was a cold mid week overcast dayI'm not sure. A mate of mine had one of these copters filmed a heap of stuff and was a good
operator until one day the wind got behind it and it went out of range last seen on its way to NZ

Funny Byron is known for it's so called easy lifestyle but the locals are worse than the southern GC locals imo.

I was there for 4 weeks in July 2009 & the pass was hell busy, even with a smaller swell. But you didn't have to travel far to get a peak to yourself. Seems to be like that at a lot places over there. One place will be packed, so you drive to another that's not far away by WA standards & get heaps of waves.

Is that an oxy moron? Most of those so-called locals have not been there that long but claim in like they have from what I have seen

As Mick said loads of great waves and small crowds not far away - I head there 3 times a year with work and never have any troubles with the crowds. Just avoid the Pass and a couple of other spots and its happy days

Hey Sporto
You sound like one of those Euros that flies to Indo paddles out straight to the inside and wonders why the locals drop in and people yell at you
My advice
Go back to the ski fields
I'm not going to miss you

My mate who is the least experienced of my crew dropped in on a guy by accident, it was one of those things, yes he shouldn't have, but I found out later that he didn't know the rules.

What do you mean he didn't know the rules? There's not a lot of them and if you bring a friend out to surf with you it should be your job to educate him on the rules. Also, people surfing in "crews" is part of the problem. Mob mentality kicks in and they often seem to forget to respect others in the water and start surfing competitively against each other.

I think a great part of the problem with surfing these days is the middle age beginner
They probably get respect in a lot of aspects of their lives and they expect it when they paddle out in the lineup with hardly any experience
Guess what
You are at the bottom of the food chain
Simple as that
I started as a kid and didn't get squat until my ability improved and the older crew accepted my presence. Even my uncles who I surfed with told me I'd be getting scraps until I grew up
When you are a child you tend to look up to anyone that's older than you
When you start surfing as an adult you don't really look up to anyone and they get all upset when some kid burns you

Just myself and one other guy most of this mornings surf. We just went wave for wave and at one point I was on the inside on a monster set, (for me anyway) anyway he called me so I had to go, dropped in expecting to die but got a great stand (almost I was crouching) up barrel

If he hadn't of pushed me, it wouldn't off happened. I meet this guy in the water about a year ago and have seen each other a hand full of times. My point is not everywhere is crowded and un friendly

Surfers need to grow up and realise that they don't own **** and now body owns a wave.dont like the crowds there is 1000 s of km of coastline in wa and a millions of good waves broke in the last 24 hours with nobody riding them.

It's just about showing a bit of common courtesy when out in the line up. You wouldn't drive on the roads like a maniac cutting across people - although tis questionable when driving in Perth - but you understand the gist of things. Learners have to be mindful of the rules governing the surf (look them up on the net - you don't learn to do maths without learning to count) and the experienced guys have to give the newbies a go (remembering where they came from). Localism is another thing that can easily be solved with the same thought process. Rock up with a little respect and the majority of locals will let you be. Turn up like you own the place and don't be surprised if your car gets waxed/ wheels slashed.

Surfing is much like life. Show people respect and you will receive it back in bucket loads. Honestly we surf to escape the sh** that we face on land - not in the water!

I've never really understood the locals only thing. Well I do 'get it', but technically if you fully endorse 'locals only' and enforce it at your break, shouldn't you then not surf any other break... ever?

What I'm saying is yeah, try the other person's shoes on just for a moment...

I know where you're coming from PP. My interactions with the majority of locals have been pretty good though so I have never experienced localism badly. They'll either put up with me or hoot and encourage as I do my best to be friendly and show respect. Maybe it's just having that feeling of investment in a place/ thing and seeing it being 'tampered' with - like a childs favourite toy; not given a choice but being told by a parent to share it around...

Meh, I've got more important things to worry about - like how woman are always suppose to be right even if I'm not wrong and furthermore, expected to apologize and seem sincere about this or face the repercussions...
