Desperado today, so I was at K-land again seeing as the rest of the week's off the cards. It was barely 2' on the sets, maybe a couple of 3'ers. And yet I had a couple of flurries of lots of waves in a row, pissing off the locals no doubt. I was in position for a nice one right after I paddled out, but I let a local guy have it. He couldn't believe it, and I felt a bit stupid, but karma rewarded me as on the next one I got I managed to bust the tail out and slide it around. Still, it was possibly one of the two waves of the day (I got neither).

Hmm, what else? Moderate cross-onshore was kind of fun. It was almost strong enough for whitecaps but not quite. Diagonal chop on the face made it easy to take off if you positioned and timed it right. Inside section was clean, sheltered from the wind. Although small I got some crackers.

No more water time for foreseeable future. Miniscule.

Yeah, it's dismal. No rain, no storms, no banks. Crappy. We'd better have a killer spring to make up. My local looks like mid summer, as do most Perth beachbreaks. Shoredumps and closeouts.

Funny, all late last week I was saying to myself I should go on Monday. Then over the weekend I watched the swell just stay tiny and combined with the cold I just couldn't be bothered taking a punt. Turns out it probably was alright in a few locations for a little while today. At least it was better than not-surfing, which is what I've done since last Monday and will do for at least another week. Unless I take a real gamble on Thursday.

I wanna know WTF happened in Albany on Saturday?! Someone out there jiggling the buoy up and down?!

We desperately need it. I really hope the rest of winter and spring make up for the last couple of months of nothingness. My local gets closed to boards again soon, and it hasn't even worked yet (a couple of days there were people out but it certainly wasn't working properly).

There were a couple of 5'ers that day, and even looked like a single 6' wave rolled through an outer bombie way down the beach. Regular 4' sets too. I was as amazed as you. Who'd have thought that that much swell gets through to the metro area, and it even sort of handled it.

I am interested in finding out how much it can handle. 5' seems too big, big closeout sets across the whole bay. Might work on a higher tide though.

I went for a drive just now. Water's high and sand's washing but not really enough. Swell's smaller than I expected. It's trying to do the right thing but needs a few more days. A few hardier souls than me out at the usual spots. Four longboards practising for the Whalebone thing, which surprised me. I might have another check this afternoon, since the tide was too high for a decent wave right now (although there were rideable waves occasionally).

Wind's trying to go offshore at a few locations right now . I'm tempted to go to Mandurah this arvo. It's very calm down there.

Thanks a lot doggie. I paddled out right at the end of the calm spell. Looks like 12-2pm was the slot. So I got a few waves before the wind came up again, and they kind of sucked. Mostly stoked to be back at my local break for the first time this year. Deep water out the back, no banks, fair amount of swell and you could get a fun takeoff and then pump through to where the water's washed up over the regular beach and then it'd wall up a bit. But only a bit.

Once the wind picked up again it became like a washing machine and I didn't even get a wave for about an hour at the end. Toes were numb. No defined peaks, just wind waves everywhere. Whenever a wave came it was just all over the place with about 10 different wind peaks on it from all directions. Rained hard enough that we all had to shelter our eyes. Still, it's been a couple of weeks out of the water. I'm guessing the next two days will be packed at a few spots although it'll suck. I'll sit them out. Monday? Maybe, but a big maybe.

I went and had a watch down at my local break today. It was OK, much smaller than yesterday but much cleaner than when I was out. No banks. Nothing much getting stirred up unfortunately. Too small and not onshore enough. Weed's encroaching, so ideally banks will form but the weed will dissapate (not likely though). Hopefully the next two days do something for moving sand.

Lots of water n sand moving around today, big swells coming through in the south, though not as huge as you'd think.
Epic kiting conditions

I drove past the Whaleback thing and stopped for a brief look. Kudos to them for trying to paddle out. I was very impressed with whoever makes the venue tent. That thing was rock solid.

My local had a heap of water moving around. A massive rip had peaks breaking about 200m+ out. and channelling heaps of sand (hopefully). Sliamea Bay was trying to work. Doesn't seem to happen much these days. There were certainly some epic waves railing through and I was tempted for a paddle but I had other things on and the handful of people out there were making hard work of it. I'd reckon if you did paddle out you'd have to just be in the right place at the right time to get a wave. Mostly they were a bit fat too, with occasional tasty sections. Big walls though, and maybe consistent 4' (which is unusually large). Strange, because the swell wasn't big. Just wind waves. I'm tempted to go down tomorrow, just for a look. It's going to be epic.

Watermans is rooted now. When I was a grom that was a great wave, bloody Hillarys marina stopped all the sand flow down that way!!

i agree - used to surf it most weekends for years - doesn't break now - although, over the past few weeks i have noticed a 3-4 guys sitting off first reef when there is a bit of swell. this is probably crowd dodging (or Trigg being toooo straight) more than the quality of the wave there...
