Hi Dave

Are those large Cdrives in the Creek? I agree if you put a nubster in that setup or even a small Quobba it would significantly loosen it up. The medium front 'Cdrives' with small center fin on my Creek is very loose. Surprisingly so and yet seems to have good hold on the wave face. The waves here right now are glassy perfection. Looking forward to the surf tomorrow.

Is the green the largest size.
If so will be trying that combo in few days...

great! let me know how you find it.

colas said..
Yes.
For now the combo green in front + orange in rear is my favorite for small boards. I use a full orange set for longer boards as I use more the rail than the fins, and the speed & looseness gain of the smaller fins is great, as they have ton of hold anyways at speed.
I guess that when their rear adjustable fins (slider) will be available, a full green set with a slider will be quite interesting: just slide the fin forward for smaller waves, you can do it apparently in the water tool-less with no risk of losing the fin.

Yes, the adjustables are very cool. The degree they go to get the machining perfect is just crazy (but necessary - nobody wants a wobbly fin).

Work a treat in my SMIK Short Mac with soft channels.

E-mail from Troy regarding this,

Hi Keith,

Hope all is good with you.

Good News C-Drive is back. I have teamed up with a US based company. They will be doing C-Drive Fins for FCS 1 & Futures - Thrusters and Quads Small, Medium & Large sizes.

They are doing a Pre-Order sale price on Thrusters for USD $75.00 - they will also do Quads on request ( sorry no twins just yet but very soon ).

You can let people know about it on your Seabreeze forum if you like.

The company is Surf NVS:
www.surfnvs.com/collections/thrusters

Contact emails below are Leif & Ragnar:

Cheers

This is fantastic! I just ordered 3 sets of Cdrive fins. Well done Troy. It looks like the delivery will be later in August. Time to get the fins dialed in for the winter storms.

cheers

These are a few waves from today with my 8'7" Creek and the medium J-drive side fins and small center fin. Definately the best setup I have tried with this board. It feels stable on the wave and yet easy to turn. Looking forward to gettin out in some bigger waves. Great that Troy has partnered with a USA company and we will now all have access to these amazing fins.

Cheers

Bob

I am really keen to get my hands on some of these fins. Can someone please explain to me how to determine the best size S,M or L for my board?

What brand board / size do you want to C-Drive ?
Some body may have done it .
Myself, have basically replaced, same for same, L for L , ect.
Mind you, from Grom up I almost have a full range , so I do mix it up for the wave of the day.

Yes, using the same size label than your regular fins is a good starting point.

I have a 9'1 creek so same tail as the speed. Originally put large sides and medium centre (CDrive), then changed to a small centre and found this much 'looser" and my personal preference with the CDrives. However i prefer the Quobbas most of the time, large (green) sides and small (orange) centre works so well in my opinion. Especially in anything under head high, over that and in fast hollow waves I prefer the extra hold of the CDrives.

I would invest in some Quobba fins also, well worth the investment. PS Im a fully paid up user.....

Hi,
I Agee with Dave that C-drives on the Speeed work well with a small Centre Cdrive fin. I have an 8'10" Speeed with medium sides and small centre. For me, a 70kg intermediated geezer, much better drive and turning than traditional fin set ups. As our local shaper said "there is a lot going on on the tail of that board". I don't think you need to over fin it. The Sunova "105"s it came with were way to big and I believe this is a common sentiment. (Creek if you are out there could you ask Sunova to ship their boards with smaller fins?)

Cheers

Dave, what is it you like about the Quobba's compared to the C Drive?

So I'm thinking about a C-Drive/Quobba combination on my Speeed to loosen it up whilst maintaining drive through fast turns. I am thinking large C-Drives on the sides matched with a medium Quobba centre. Thoughts??

I do not think it is a good idea. Quobba have plenty of hold at speed, C-Drives will only slow the board (compared to Quobba sides), and thus you will not benefit from the central Quobba. It would make sense if you where trying to slow the board to get more control, but then why use a Quobba in rear in this case?

But you are welcome to try, the truth lies in actual experiments. Especially if you prefer grip to speed.

Ok, good point, cheers Colas! Might just stick with a mid sized set of C-Drives to loosen up the board. I am finding the standard issues FCS 105's a bit too stiff.

Hi Shi

Interesting question. I just received three sets of C-drive fins, small, medium and large. The fin quality looks great. There is not a big difference in the size between the sets. ( I will try to post a photo of the fins to show this). I have been thinking along the same lines as you and trying multiple combinations. What I may try is a very small trailer/ nubster fin with the medium or large C-drive side fins on my 8'10" Speeed. I would agree that medium c-drive will be fine with your Speeed. I really like the performance with medium Cdrive copies and a quite small trailer fin. Great hold, fast and yet turns well. Personally I like this combination better than the Quoba mediums on this board. Colas advice is good and the only way to find the best fin setup for you is to experiment. The Speeed is inherently a very quick board. I don't think the Cdrives slow it down and couldn't see a noticeable increase in speed with the Quoba fins.

Cheers

Cdrive/Jdrive Comparison

I am so stoked by these fins. Great hold in bigger waves which has increased my confidence greatly when dropping into head high and bigger and yet still quite loose with the smaller trailer fin. Below is a comparison between the Cdrive and Jdrive. Size comparison the Jdrive sits just between the medium and small Cdrive. The trailer fin is crazy small when compared to the small Cdrive. The finish on the Cdrives is beautiful (a step above the Js). Price wise not much difference.

The first photo below is medium Cdrive/Jdrive

Below is large Cdrive compared to J

Below is J trailer to small Cdrive

Below is small Cdrive to J

Speeed with medium Cdrives and Jtrailer

I have put the small Cdrive side fins and J trailer on my Creek. Replaced my leashes and looking forward to the swell to start coming through. Surfers like skiers look forward to winter!

Oh and I heard a good surf joke.

" If you had to choose between your wife and surfing would you go with your longboard or shortboard?"

I currently ride an 8'2" Speeed with the stock 105's.

I believe the board is over finned anti is really apparent when there's a bit of current as I can feel the push while waiting in the line up.

I am ~78 kg's and assume I would go with the C Drive's in a size small as below:

https://www.surfnvs.com/collections/specialty/products/c-drive-s-apex

I don't see the trailer fin on the site that some refer to here.

Any perspective or suggestions appreciated - thx!
