Foil Sup DW

The above discussions on fitness and ability are correct, it makes a huge difference. On my 2140HA I am not maintaining a relatively low HR and have energy to burn when needed. ON the smaller foils, you are using more in my case anyway.

SO my point! I think I am going to continue to work on being more efficient on larger foils, but also keep comparing this to smaller foils. Ideally I'd love to be efficient on a smaller foil and then have the ability to go like lighting when the opportunity arrises.

Such a cool balancing act. Loving it more and more.

Quick run this morning before work. Winged upwind from Mona Vale Basin to Makaha, sat down and packed my wing away then did a DW run back.

Conditions were lighter than I was expecting but still fun. Wind South around 15kn with a NE swell about 1.5m (made it a bit tricky).

Riding new custom board 6'6" x 26" @130L, Jet 2140HA/280HA on 80cm Fuselage on C100/75cm mast shimmed at the base by 4 degrees.

Here's the full journey including setup, upwind, packdown and DW.


The full DW run including the unfortunate drops. The opposing swell definitely made it a challenge, and the spot I dropped is a spot I drop nearly every time, some weird stuff goes on there!

This is the extract of the good bit (before dropping).

And for some who like to see my upwind stats, this is just the upwind. Using the Naish WIngsurfer 5.3m.


using the Wing makes a pre-work run easy! 7 km+ Dw'er done in 1:13:50.

Nah not yet . more gear to bloody buy. I'm still honing in the best board setup at the moment. One thing at a time. but yeh, those that do both say the DW supping rules all so I believe them !

Yes, I put my paddle onto my wing. Naish have little velcro straps that sinch it tightly to the handles in 3 places - rock solid. Then when I am packing down my wing, I take it off the paddle and use the coil leash to wrap around my paddle shaft and let me paddle just float behind me while I get organised. Key thing is take your time, relax, try get as much water out off your wing as possible and pack "neatly" into your bag. Unfortunately I fell in before getting up, and soaked everything, adding probably another 10kg to my rider weight! But good paddle up practice.

HAd a fun Bay Downwinder on Saturday morning. The tide was going the wrong way so the bumps were small, but there was some wind that helped. This is my first go at a re-inflate whilst out on the water. Next step is to do it while on foil .

Conditions, NW Wind -20-25kn. Zero Seas (Bay offshore run).
Gear Riding a custom 6'6" x 26" 130L board, Jet 2140HA/310HA on 80cm Fuselage and C100/75cm Mast

Another De-flate DW'er.

This time back in the ocean. This was my longest one without a paddle with me. And of coarse, Murphy's law, I dropped on the first setup! But nit was good to see how long it will take out in the open ocean. I was a fair way offshore. 0:04:30 total from coming off the foil the re-inflate once to realise I didn't lock the one way valve, to a second inflate, then up on foil. Not bad!

Conditions - NE 15kn. Wind swell ENE 1m, Ground Swell SE 1.5m.

Riding - Custom 6'6" x 26" @130L and Naish Jet 2140HA/310HA on 80cm Fuselage and C100/75cm mast. No shims.

Music - Scissor sisters - Ooh.

A few extra stats below as usual.

This is how long it took to re-inflate (twice) when I came off foil right at the beginning. I was too excited and went too early!

This shows how quickly I came off foil. I had literally just turned down wind and pulled the bung! Top tip, ride a little bit and get in the groove first!

I recently test rode the new GoFoil GT2200 on the sup downwind. The things is an absolute joy to ride. Easy controlled lift, pumps and will slow down to a snails pace without dropping. If you are struggling to downwind at 85kg+ I'd recommend you try one of these new gen wings. Comparison to 1850 below for size.

Using GT2200 + Long fixed tail (FTL14) - on a 29" demo mast currently.
I would prefer a 32" Mast so I can wing with the setup.

I'm Sup Foiling, more fun IMO and a better challenge. Wing ding drag racing over 25km gets a bit boring. It is a paddle race after all. Fingers crossed for good bumps and wind this weekend. Today was epic! I'll be down tomorrow arvo for a 1/2 cut warm up run.

We had a total of 7 entrants in the Sup Foiling division. The most entrants to date. The last two years have been really difficult with all the international and interstate borders closed to attract many visitors. Scotty McCluskey came over to represent South Australia!

1st Marcus Tardrew took out the win with a time of around 1hr:11mins. Riding Axis ART999.
2nd Scotty McCluskey - riding GoFoil NL220
3rd Jon Donisi - riding Takuma 1210

We unfortunately had two gear failures in the SUP foiling fleet. One broken paddle and one lost a bolt in his rear stab.
Lessons learnt for next year! Check your gear and make sure it is foiling tough!

The wing ding fleet had a great mix of ladies and gents, a lot of stoke on the water.

There is a highlight video up on the King of the Cut Facebook site.

Hopefully next year we can see the SUP Foiler fleet grow in size as people progress from wingding. I think with the new foil gear and board designs it is getting easier and easier to get up and foiling in the ocean under paddle power.

Thanks for the tips - riding high on bump and high on mast are probably the two things that has helped me progress the most.

I'd like to add, that keeping your head up and looking ahead is crucial in this respect. I used to try and gauge my ride-height by looking down in front of board to visually ascertain if I was high or low.

I found that looking up and ahead, you start sensing your ride height, more by feel. and sensation of speed. It also allows you to plan your path much better. Apparently, moto-cross/enduro motorbike riders are taught the same thing, don't focus on the hole in front of your wheel, but rather look up and ahead.

The wing ding fleet had a great mix of ladies and gents, a lot of stoke on the water.

Hopefully next year we can see the SUP Foiler fleet grow in size as people progress from wingding. I think with the new foil gear and board designs it is getting easier and easier to get up and foiling in the ocean under paddle power.





What about the start ? Did you have to paddle for a long time on the flat, or were you able to start in the bumps ?




No it was a gentleman's agreement. We all paddled out into the bumps and started from there

We were all gentleman except the bloke with a home made foil assit thingy that just took off

Any report regarding the KOTC, looks like the conditions were good for foiling.








Perfect conditions for King of the Cut last weekend. Warm and windy.
We had a total of 7 entrants in the Sup Foiling division. The most entrants to date. The last two years have been really difficult with all the international and interstate borders closed to attract many visitors. Scotty McCluskey came over to represent South Australia!

1st Marcus Tardrew took out the win with a time of around 1hr:11mins. Riding Axis ART999.
2nd Scotty McCluskey - riding GoFoil NL220
3rd Jon Donisi - riding Takuma 1210

We unfortunately had two gear failures in the SUP foiling fleet. One broken paddle and one lost a bolt in his rear stab.

There's always one! LOL

So was the timing taken from leaving the "official" start line then? I was wondering why the Wing times were so much quicker. I would have picked Marcus smoking the Wings.

Sorry to change the direction of the thread but youse guys are all pretty much experts. I am 100kg old and a bit porky. I have big equipement -- Fanatic 6'11" Sky with Naish 2450foil. I just can't balance the board in choppy wind driven conditions. Any tips or is it just time and practice in rough water. I notice all you guys are young and pretty fit. Losing kgs very slowly. Don't know if it is worth struggling on. cheers

Gday, no expert here but thought I could share my experience as whenever I hear someone questioning if they should persist...it makes me twitchy.

im only a little dude 70kg. I started on a 111litre board and the first downwind run I did was entirely on my knees... progression was slow! Really the key was looking for the small wins and learning opportunities in every session. It's the hardest thing I have ever learnt to do but the rewards are incredible!
In regards to progression in balance, some stuff I found helpful was if in the bumps don't try to stand pointing any direction except downwind. Try to do a run where the wind and swell line up in a similar angle, anywhere with significant refraction will be a lot more tricky.
I also spend a fair bit of time paddling the board and foil around in flat water. I looked like a clown but there is just no substitute for time on the board.

keep at it! Find other like minded people of similar ability that are also keen to get into it! It's absolutely worth the struggle.

my current board is now 5'8x22 and 75 litres

I did another Tuesday tips which this time we had a pumping SE wind which made it super fun. This one is on foil angles and getting the most out of your foil.

I have never been on the fanatic board so hard to comment if that is really helping or not, just from the looks of it I am sure it will work but maybe for DW there is better. The foil is big enough and should have more than enough lift but again i have never been on it so hard to say if for 100kg it will do the job.
What i do suggest is keep working on all the areas that are going to make it easier, work on your balance as you will need to stand up in a rough ocean, if you are having trouble balancing then this will hold you back because to get up DW you need 4 to 10 good strong paddle strokes with and if you are unbalanced then you will not be getting those stokes you need.

Work hard on your skills side, try catching some boat wakes just paddling up into them, this will help alot with timing.

If you feel your gear is holding you back then change it up as I know one thing and that is I do not want any disadvantage's when learning to DW foil and if you are using a heavy board or anything that is making it harder than it needs to be then that sucks.

100kg is always going to be a bit tougher to learn but the still fully doable, you might not get going in 10knots but foresure you can DW foil with the right gear and time put in.

More downwind foiling on the Goldy. This time Ben Tardrew who for anyone who does not know is the design guy for us at ONE and Foil Unknown.
Ben is probably one of the fastest downwind foil guys around and having him designing the boards and foils is such a cool thing as I know what he wants and he knows what i want and that is for it to be the best!!
