Ha, funny you say that!!

I did the same (sort of) thing today.

My Ducky is on the davits but during the summer I don't put a cover on it & it collects some rain water. I usually have to unlock the chain then lower it to empty it out then raise & lock it up again but today I put a little 12v pump (that I use for cooling my fridge) in the low point & plug it in to a cig lighter outlet & it pumps out beautifully.

It worked so well that I'm now going to permanently mount an old water pump (that sucks), with a switch, so I just need to insert a hose into the ducky & flick a switch!! I'll also run it through my Pi4 so I can turn it on from home as well.

Gotta love technology!!

If its on davits can't you just leave the bung out? Do you leave the outboard on? If not store the dinghy upside down on the davits when you are away for long periods.

I could leave the aft lower to drain out but then I'd be constantly hitting my head or having to duck!!

I have it "snugged" up firmly so it doesn't "flop" about!!

It lifts with an electric winch & would be too much trouble (for me) to flip it over - quite doable but not really necessary.

after a few days of intense rain I thought I would air the boat a bit so down to the club and opened the portlights, saw a few people airing out their sails so decided that was a good idea. Went on deck, unzipped the stackpack, hoisted the main and I don't know 20 or 30 or 50 litres of water came pouring out and went straight down the portlights into the saloon.....doh

Looked at it from afar through passing rain storm.

Had a couple of previous attempts at cleaning some birds nest from inside my boom, had removed a surprising amount of leaves and seaweed in these attempts but Saturday I went the whole hog.

I removed the back off the boom, its a Selden with the first two reefs using the blocks with a pulley inside that slide up and down the length. I pulled them completely out and let the whole lot dangle off the end. Then I attached a hose to a batten I had and fed it through the holes at the front. 2 hours later after pushing it up and down with full pressure bird nest stuff was still coming out. I think the entire length (5mtrs) of the boom was full of leaves and dirt and seaweed. The neighbours were as amazed as me at the sheer volume of rubbish those birds bring in. I am surprised the reefing system even worked.

Sounds like you have the same boom as me on my NS38. Lots of dried seaweed in mine too but haven't been game to drill out the rivets and pull it off yet. Maybe it would reduce the considerable internal friction of the single line reefing system if I did.

Thank you for that. I did not notice that the end casting is secured by torx rather than rivets ( but have confirmed with a picture stored on my phone) so I will take them out next time I go to the boat and clean the inside.

I lost one of the little plastic "bearing/bushes" that goes on the sliding car and some of the others are quite worn so going to remove the back again this weekend and replace them.

Would be worth having some on hand so you don't have to do it twice like me. I am getting them from Allyacht Spar's in Lytton

Hi Cam, I have the same boom, there's a lot of inherent friction in the design I find. I wonder if there's a better replacement for those little bushes or a way to lubricate that'll help and last? Maybe drag a silicon soaked sponge up and down the galleries before reassembly, any ideas?

No brilliant ideas are coming to mind. I guess friction is a feature of a single line system that can only be reduced to a point.

The plastic bearings on the bottom of my sliding cars were worn far more than the top. Probably worth rotating them at the very least and clean and lubricate and make sure you have no twisted lines while your at it. I have a 500% improvement in my system after removing that wheel barrow full of bird nesting stuff.

At the moment I have given up on my single line system and have riveted an eye either side of the mast just below the tack. Each padeye guides a seperate sheathed dyneema line going up to one reefing tack with a stopper knot. The sheathing on the dyneema line is removed down to where it passes through the eye to reduce friction. These luff reefing line(s) then pass through blocks at base of mast/deck level and back to the cockpit.
I have pulled the single line reefing system tight so the front (luff) line is jammed and stopped at the sheave in the front of the boom and does nothing. Yes twice as many reefing lines coming back to the cockpit and I have yet to try the system due to the rain. Certainly should get over the internal friction problem however.
I haven't added new clutches yet but have rather repurposed some existing one's until I decide whether I like this set up. Attached is a picture showing some of the crap in my boom that I have been able to get out without taking the end casting off. Sorry usual problem with picture lying sideways.

I have an extension 12volt electric cord. Used for a number of things.

This was yesterday morning during standeasy, I was having a coffee and it was raining outside. Note the manual water temperature gauge on the bulkhead. I lit the oil lamp just to check it. On the bulkhead opposite the heads There is a mirror stuck over the laminex bulkhead. $24 from Bunnings. The cushions are from off the footpath.


This is just a SS cover to keep the headsail sheet off the control lines for the Aries self steering gear.

I continue to work diligently.
The deck will be completely repainted today and stored. Only painting today, I believe in no power tools Sunday.
It's nice for the neighbourhood and myself and family.

Thank you. I did it! I travel very light, no pc just phone. I but ask if it's boring please tell me. ATM it's honestly watching paint dry??

The thing I enjoy most after knowing I'm saving a classic is the planing.
I think a step, set a obtainable goal and complete it.
Than process continue.

A full repaint with minor works is daunting but planning and getting it done on schedule very mentally rewarding.

I guess I'm the sort of bloke who would win lottery and go to work the next day.

I feel better for being productive.
Especially more when at the end of the day I can see my tolls worth.

Im 10 % there.
