A spinnaker is only good when you're going slower than the wind!
Besides at the speed these things cover the course, they'd be raising and lowering it every couple of minutes, not very practical, everybody on board is busy enough as it is.
The kiwis have one in case the wind drops out and they run out of time to finish the race with their normal sails.

The wind blows directly down the course so 1st leg is directly upwind 2nd leg directly down. Although they don't sail that angle of course.

Loved the commentary, g8 insights - not enough grubby physics around the performance facts wind shadows - dirty air travel impacts, why they don't use 2 foils to bump the boat when trying to get up - My thinking - anything to replace the hull waterline drag profiile???
I know when I am trying to get up on foil I stall and bump/ bounce while flogging the kite = a surge,, But I can splat and grin and try again

PSST - 2.5 hours foiling myself so couch is comfy as!!

I think there's a rule limiting the use of two foils simultaneously? But anyway with two down there's very little righting moment so they wouldn't be able to sheet in.

Mostly to maintain stability in both light & strong winds. In particular you'll see them on both foils in high-wind (15+knts) mark roundings & jibes as they've all experienced rudder cavitation/spin out when loads increase through fast transitions. In the light two foils down ain't the best to get going as the lift Vs drag gains don't add up. Also seems the windward foil down hampers getting a good heel angle to take flight.

When in front ETNZ are starting to sail away to big margins & are getting better with each outting. LR seem to only be able to sit on em when in the lead. Not sure if it's all by choice but interesting.

I lose track of whether theyre travelling upwind or downwind quite regularly when i've started watching a broadcast halfway through. And thats coming from a sailing (and apparent wind sailing) background

there no angle difference or sheeting angle difference to be able to tell without being there with the wind blowing on your face.

Apart from yesterday we have been really lucky to only have one day of no wind.
Looking good with 12 knots gusts on the water.

I can't see going back to displacement boats where the first beat was 25 minutes as to get good sponsors the need to appeal to wider audience with short attention span.
hopefully they keep the class so more syndicates can participate then upgrade sails and foils.

How good is this Race 7....lead change and really close racing. kiwis sailing brilliantly (after the start that is) 30 second turnaround by NZ on the 3rd leg

Yeah that was what my edit was referring to. Effectively a 4km lead turnaround

Cruel day for LR yesterday, hopefully they can get off the canvas so we can see a little more racing. Biggest of days today.

I wonder what would have happened if Luna Rose decided to keep sailing the course instead of staying high to try and get back on their foils? Seems there was more wind in the middle of the course and they might have had time to get there?

Interesting that they both fell off the foils doing manoeuvres that they didn't have to make. Team New Zealand didn't have to gybe right in the dirty air of Luna Rossa. Luna Rossa didn't have to immediately turn right at the top gate given they had a 4 minute lead. Surely you'd dispense with breezy race tactics and just sail on until you were in a gust?

At least they then learnt, neither did it a second time.

Qu'... Do the boats have the wind feed readings from around the course while racing?
.. When the chopper race commentators call their observations you are given the sense that the course has HI/Lo wind zones most obviously while wind lite .. Sometimes you think the yachts are tracking to max the wind speed and others totally seat of the pants from their cockpit??

Naturally a Southern Hemisphere supporter - but biggest preference is exposure to more / new tactics...

Happy to donate the Sunny Coast wind 4 the day.. Just redefining knock-off time today - want a piece of this

Great race on a stadium course C with more gusty/shiftier wind.
Been watching the post race conference and how they all enjoyed tight racing with multiple lead changes and lucky for us kiwis to get the race winning shift on the last upwind.
It it the greatest AC race?

Good call not to do a second race with a massive SW shift that would have skewed the course to a follow the leader with no tactics.

Tomorrow forecast for Easterly.

What a series. I thought that the boats couldn't get any better from the last AC regatta with the foiling cats, but here we are with the most incredible foiling monohulls.....Can't even begin to imagine what class of boat they will dream up for the 37th AC!

Having seen this regatta, it will be fantastic to see how far the class can develop. Too many changes over the previous ACs have led to dwindling competitors, simply put new classes of yachts have led to low challenger attendance. Only way to get more challengers will be to keep the class going for a few cycles. Entry & development become less risky and there are second hand boats+kit+crews around to entice 'novices'. My money is AC37 defenders, ETNZ, will maintain the AC75.

More interestingly, rumors are doing the rounds that the AC maybe run by ETNZ as early as next year in the northern hemisphere (where all the bulk of world money is) to drum up interest and no doubt try to recoup the $$ short fall for all involved in AC36.

AND... many of the skippers & crews will be in Bermuda late next month doing the rounds on the F50s in SailGP. Be great if there is similar coverage to what we've had for AC36.

No need to attract more competitors.

Who? Many high net-worth individuals out there with pro-sailing teams out there. Most live in the northern hemisphere competing in all manner of regattas. If the cup goes north & in particular to EU/UK, I reckon there will be more teams jump into the ring.

If more people sailed, the world would be a better place. Was in Valencia with the IACC class where there was 10-11 competitors tearing around in old & new yachts in the Spanish sunshine. Best sporting event I've ever been to, was fantastic to see sailing create such interest and inspiration in the public to simply get on the water for a sail.

Brent that must have been awesome to see and that class worked well with the older boats being picked up and hope that can happen with this new class. it would have been great to see more teams here like with 2000 & 2003 Defense.
Rumor is there will be some changes to the current class rules to make more viable for more teams.
Also Challenger of record now INEOS as there was bit of fall out with Italians but their sailing team is well respected.

The NZ Government always puts some money into Team NZ to promote NZ (which we only got Essential team members, their families and lastly Team owners or major sponsors). Our Government won't put in money if the cup leaves NZ.
The Auckland Council re did the water front and futured proofed an area for team bases.

I got the chance to get out on the water yesterday with a reasonable view, just awesome to defend the cup with emphasis on Team of 100 to 150 people all giving 100 percent. The sailors where very humble and appreciated the support of being on home waters
