Okay one for the diehard sailors....Pardon my ignorance I've always pronounced leeward Lee-ward, whereas the majority yankee commentary team pronounce it Lew-ard. Is this just a nuance of amercian english vs British english?

I think you'd struggle to find a sailor these days pronouncing it "lee"ward. im not even sure its an american adoption thing. sailors just shorten up some words so they can get it out of their mouth as quickly as possible (for no real apparent reason other than it rolls off the tounge a bit easier).

Yes Decrepit, Americans sound English different and remember slalom racing in Maui around the buoys where we would say boy's.
But one thing the yanks and Aussies have in common was surname Grant have more 'rant' sound than kiwis saying.

Was on the water today moving mates sailing cat from being on the hard to back to mooring. With a proper Course A the top mark out from home and to be closer to the boats with the big masts was great and will park up on the water for next mid week Prada cup in January.
But still best viewing and tactical analysis on TV.
Pity we didn't get final day racing and seabreeze came in early but when it started to cloud over knew racing was over just a pity TNZ were outside time limit but "rules are rules "!

I say "lee-ward", but I guess it's mostly an academic thing since I sail on my own, so only say it in my head.

The hole in Patriot. At first glance looks like the light hull skin between structures has punched through? or some structural element has ripped out taking the hull panel with it when the loads went through the roof. Either way, astounding she's on dry land with a hull penetration that size.

So, was it an oversight by the crew not to release the leeward running backstay, or was there some reported equipment failure? I've never sailed a boat where you needed to do that, so I'm not familiar with how it's done.

In this case yes, the runners are controlled by the crew to tension the rig appropriately, not much different to releasing+pulling in headsail sheets when tacking/gybing.

Safe to say it would have been hectic rounding the top mark and then sh!t hit the fan. Maybe too much tension on the runner jammer to release, someone slipped & couldn't get to it... guess we'll find out when everyone has calmed down.

Will be interesting to see if they can get it back on the water. The hole is probably the easy fix, but the salt water drowned electronic wizardry inside may not be reparable. I bet it is fairly bespoke stuff too, not easy to buy off the shelf.

Was camping so saw but not heard the abandoned and first race at pub but second race on radio. Now back on east coast bays of Auckland getting a lot more video and discussion
Big gust rain squall so coming in hot with lift and sounded safer to bear away than tack and bear away.
Realistically one crew member suggested last second change to bear away but helm to commit that crew expected rather than change last second.
They are a good team and will get back racing for semi sail off probably with Luna Rosa.
The greatest take is how the volunteer course marshalls used boat boundary marks to keep boat afloat and that all teams helped in time of need ???
But what I'm really interested in is to see how teams use a full or fractional code zero when they are mid race and the wind drops so option of either more drag of having furled sail or halyard from bowspirit and sail stored ready to hoist and deploy.

just a thought here, how would they have gone straight after righting it and discovering the leak, ifthey'd kept pulling and turned it the other way so the hole was in the air?
Could they have then pumped it out and put a temp plug over the hole, or just towed it back like that.

Look at the bottom batten of the jib at 45 knots. Backwinding. Way undersheeted compared to the main. No wonder the rudder lost grip and couldn't complete the bearaway. Who was on the jib sheet?

This is awesome, 75 foot carbon freak machines leaping like a 12 footer. The bow must have been 40' in the air at one point.
Not so good for the hull but the press coverage is global.
Good luck to American Magic in getting back on the water for the finals. I have heard Team NZ loaning a bunch of boat-builders to assist with the mammoth task ahead.

Family in NZ have said seeing these in the flesh doing 40 knots is mind blowing. Foiling is the future of main stream media getting involved in sailing, to go back to conventional displacement will suit the purest only.

They seem to be implying that, despite the leeward runner catching, they think they would have got around OK if they'd hooked into the turn a bit harder.

guess I'm just an old fart, I don't consider youtube as main stream media. But I suppose the percentage of people with smart TVs these days is fairly high.
Also if it hadn't of been for this forum, I wouldn't have known it was on.
Same with most people I talk to. The average Jo Blow is missing out on all this action.

The footage being streamed is pretty good for a fringe sport & yep, running it through a smart TV. Beats the crap out of all the ads we would have to suffer if it was on free to air.

I see calendar dates for the round-robin races, but are there any times listed anywhere?

really? Where? The americascup.com live streams show as not being available in Australia, I assume because Foxtel has exclusive rights. I had to sign up to a 2 week free trial with Kayo sports to see last weekends races.
