Rex is wrong, killing for food = ok killing for sport (any sport) = not ok.

But it's not okay to apply that same logic to a great white when it kills a human and doesn't eat most of it?

I have no problems with killing one IF they know its the shark responsible.

The part about this issue that I hate is that people are using these deaths as an excuse to kill sharks.

Note to self: if being attacked, scratch my driver's license number onto it's hide as it chomps me.

I once saw this dude on the Bathurst weekend walking around the streets with a T shirt with the words " I am an idiot" emblazoned on it.

This thread has a lot of that.

Culling is good ecological management.

Yep kangaroos etc, agree.

Yeah, kinda tough to manage something as large, transient and unbound as the ocean. Unless we can induce some hysteria into the situation

It seems the shark debate is slowing again, the problem is it only ever fires up after an attack. We need real alternatives, governments need to be pushed to make smart decisions with the our money. BUT people need to discuss the problem and not only with emotion after an attack. SO many people are calling for commercial shark fishing as the answer, or were. I thought id share this from Recfishwest..

So how do they catch sharks with gill nets? Was under the impression a 6 tone rated 316 stainless hook wouldn't snap in half? Go hug a 17 mm Sid chrome spanner and try break over your forehead.

So you thought it would be a good idea to bring it to the top of the page again.

Shart me dead!!!

Question:- Do you love trees???

If you love trees, kill your cat!!

Why:- Cats kill birds, birds kill aphids, aphids kill trees.

Can somebody please come up with a similar reasoning why sharks should be killed????

I'm ashamed to be part of the same race that can condone such cruelty

I hope your a vegan with that comment and don't support the slaughter of cows sheep fish pigs and chickens. if you have a dog or cat I hope they're vegan too.

Bull sh!t rider that gets trotted out every time, means nothing...

Its was a reasonable comment, he was ashamed of being part of a race that condoned such cruelty. Where does he sit on all the other cruelty that gets condoned.

Thankyou Rex

The idea is to talk about options, alternatives for water safety. Or you can just wait for another attack then everyone jumps up and demands that someone (Other then themselves) fix the problem.. Its called being proactive..

A few on this page have suggested that commercial shark fishing will fix the problem. I just thought id show what WA's peck rec fishing body feels about that idea. Please explain how that is not suitable.

The only reason that there are more attacks in recent years is there are more GWS and more people entering the water.

Nothing will change and the attacks will icrease unless changes are made.

i have worked with GWS with tourism for the past 7 years on and off. I will not enter the water unless water temps are above 27 degrees (tropical waters)! I will not climb Everest as there is risk of death.

Since the protection has been implied on the capture and killing of GWS over the years they have been bouncing back to large numbers Like they where when white man first arrived. (white man didn't surf or swim in those days)!

3 to 5 meter GWS will eat any lazy meal they can find its not really there fault.

the good thing about having GWS around is it keeps the seal and sealions in balance.

There will never be a balanced solution as there is way more shark bucket list lovers out there and there will never be a cull.

Ill continue to do what I love best And that's be in the water like everyone else on here. , That's what we do. Mabe the odds would decrease a bit opening commercial fishing and culling. Not going to stop us. Sorry for sledging you out jbs I admire your ability for following what you believe in.

Thanks for that, but its not that hard to stick at TBH.

I love the water and my kids love the water, i couldn't live with out the joy it provides and so I'm scared of what could happen to our oceans if we don't treat them right. So its for purely selfish reasons thats I'm so dogged regarding the issue.

Im not brains trust (Play with that how you will) so i have to listen and take advice from people who are in the know. I'll listen to science and the history to tell me what's right, i won't be fooled by internet speak or a mates mate who once knew someone or anyone with a huge vested interest in the issue. Something I've been shown is sometimes the most obvious answer is not always the right one..

Im no tree hugger although i respect the environment, but i still cant see why people won't look at alternatives.. Support culling thats fine, but in the mean while get a device, support swimming enclosures for non surfers, spotters programs, all great ideas?

Many of the options originally discussed all those years ago that i supported, (A few may remember i promoted the alternative meanings years back) those are the ideas that are now being peddled out by governments as new. Eco barriers are popping into waters up and down coast lines. Devices are being developed and people are starting to take some interest. A Shark spotters program is being rolled out as we speak in Ballina NSW, first of its kind in Australia.

Tagging has virtually died in WA, even the network of receivers is no longer being maintained, But in the East its starting to ramp up slowly.

All the time though the same few have jumped up and down demanding a cull, well they've achieved nothing, even though a hand full of great whites have been killed, but what could have been achieved if those people had jumped onto alternatives also, demanded governments be more transparent and effective with our money they are spending

For those that think we have it bad, seriously look up Reunion, ask how they got to were they are, then maybe you'll understand what we could be in for locally and why I'm so passionate about this..

Yet this last week they have tagged 24 Carnaby's. Solar power tag that collects and sends back data 8 times a day and a GPS location every 10minutes.

I said it 11 pages ago. Catch shark, tag shark, monitor in real time, gather data (water temp, numbers being tagged to see if culling is or isnt an issue etc) and clear the beaches / water when one is close so no **** gets eaten.

Surely designing a tag can't be that hard and everyone wins. Blokes can target the baddest fish in the sea, tackle shops will sell more 130lb tiagras, charter boats will have more bookings and lower running costs than chasing billfish, greenies will sleep better at night, water users will be loads safer and the govco won't be under constant pressure to do something.

Here we are in what we think is a modern world and yet in this age and that supposed to be modern, intelligent and civilized, I see murders, war, killing on the news, so many lives have been lost through war over the centuries, so many animals murdered. I think wtf is wrong with the human race, why do humans kill. Why why why.??? Then I see posts like this ^^^^ Killing for sport wrong, Killing for food wrong, Killing for power wrong, Killing for land wrong. Killing for culling wrong, KILLING = WRONG. People with the thoughts of killing is why we have such a F**K*D up world.

"Killing for food wrong"!!!!!

I guess we should anaesthetize our poultry/cows/sheep/pigs, take the meat off that we need, then sew them up again?

Or maybe just chow down on a livey like an animal?
