I can't see a better time or reason to target a species that has become a pest and a danger to beachgoers.

Seems to me the only thing that works is live baiting. Simply attaching a piece of week old tuna is not going to attract the target, more likely the fish that accounted for around 90% of the drum lines used last year, and that was the tiger shark (a scavenger). What they used this time was what brought the GW's in closer to shore this year and that was salmon. Ask any fisho if this year has been a bumper season for salmon.

Might be a good idea to employ some people to start removing this threat.

Lol. Not a great example . What environment factor has been changed in any of those sports? Surfing is safer than in the past. Leg ropes, pfds, jet ski rescue , better forecasting, shark deterrents.
If you're so concerned go and get a deterrent of your choice. There you go, safer.

Don't forget three more people died surfing in last few weeks. One up North and another two in Bali.. Really Sharks are not the only thing to be feared in the water as surfer. I don't see how any of those deaths are less tragic than a shark attack victim

Regardless of which side of the debate you take everyone knows that not only is very little going to be done other than the possibility of some largely ineffective drum baiting and that water users will continue to run the risk of being turned into shark tucker.

So the post is really just reduced to the status of ineffective but heartfelt rant. It will fizzle unless someone else is taken soon. If it does fizzle someone will start a new one when the next attack occurs.

I think we urgently need is more scientific experiments on those big fishes.

Nobody do it better that Japs and that is why we should invite them with all armada of trawlers to do their scientific experiments exclusively on sharks from now .We will have our problem solve for free and restaurants in Tokyo may serve now real fish soup instead of fish sup made of whales ( which are mammal rather).

I'd like to see an open season on the GWS for a couple of years on individuals 2.5m+. If NZ sealions become even more prevalent it may be necessary to see their numbers managed accordingly. It's not as nature intended but realistically that is the world we live in now, the human footprint stomps hard and there's no going back. Yeah, technology devices sound good but I just don't have any faith in the options available so far, no criticism intended on those working on solutions tho!

We need to bring this on.... shorting the sharts of course instead of the clay targets. Nick Rivers was doing it right already in the 80's

The only thing that was keeping shark attacks down was keeping shark numbers down. It couldn't be more ****ing obvious.

That is why I only windsurf here. Surfing and diving I only do when I travel Overseas where is safer than here.

No frequency/pulse blah device will deter a 5 meter in attacking mode. As apex predators, they know already too well we are easier targets than their normal salmon or snapper who swims way faster and better than us.

I feel very very sorry for the victim and her family.

You're living in a dream if you seriously think that anything effective is going to be done. As sad as it is just look at the statistics. How many people had to die on the roads before any action was taken? And that lobby group is a tad larger than water users.

Not only that but there was a realistic solution to road fatalities which was implemented.

There is no realistic solution to shark fatalities. The only sure thing you can say is that a dead shark cannot kill anyone. You have no effing idea how many there are in the ocean. It's not like there are fences so the one you knock off could be replaced by one from any distance away.

Sharks are a fact of life. Get over it or stay out of the water.

Here is another completely irrelevant percentage for you japie. I was going to post the percentage of people who are retarted But I though that you might take personal offence to it after your accident.

JB, it's also been my local for 30 years, as well as to the South for 10 to 15 before that. As a kid, there weren't any shark attacks, or at least very few. What had changed, protection of Great Whites. How many bull sharks, tigers and box jelly fish have killed people around Perth? Very few I'd say. What have marine scientists told us or helped with in the last 10 years with respect to people getting killed? Close to zero. Basically fisherman, divers and surfers have as much knowledge and probably more practical sense. What 'scientific brilliance' do you imagine they will ever come up with? A simple solution is just to allow fishing, to put things back to the balance that we had 30 years ago. If you want to swim with sharks, good on you; I'd rather think about the next wave not whats under me.

Mate we are not saying to kill ALL GW's, only the farkers who already adapted to stay closer to shore. I think non sharters (like me) consider the beasts more intelligent than the supporters in cott, all they with their hipster hats. Those rocket scientists have less ocean and beach hours than my social tuxedo shoes.
