Excited to hear about how this board goes.

In QLD we get so many days with just enough wind to get out through a small shore-break but you are always at risk of drifting downwind or getting stuck inside on a short board. I've been putting a sail on my Allwave SUP to make use of these days, it's easy and fun but it's pretty clumsy on the wave.

If I was lighter or more talented I could probably use my 115 freewave, but I think something like this board would fill the gap nicely.

i'll update the thread with photos once it's up and running.

current delay is sorting out the finish coat. I am out of epoxy and i can't find a good source for clear 2 pac polyurethane. most suppliers sell it in white and in 5lt drums so it's a bit pricey and the wrong colour.

so, Plan B is to buy the clear epoxy that sanded sell which can be used as a finish coat. I am just waiting to sort out a bigger order and get the epoxy as part of that.

the board is all finished other than finishing touches. i have the diamond grip and pads ready to be installed. all fin boxes and tracks are cut out. total weight is 8kg. i guess with finish coat and grip it'll end up at around 8.5kg.

I highly recommend Sanded Australia , surfset flex clear .
Just remember it sets super slow . Hard in two days for polishing .

why not go to your local auto paint shop and just buy 1L of 2K clear???

why not go to your local auto paint shop and just buy 1L of 2K clear???

Im not across 2k. Everyone ive spoken to so far has recommended epoxy or wattyl u400.

Only thing i read about 2k is its toxic.
Can i use it as a filler coat as well as finish

I ended up finding a 2 pac finish called northane. Did the bottom coat today.

Getting closer. Might do another coat on the bottom after i do the deck. 2 pac is toxic stuff.

Also got logo done on the deck.

Got up early to do the deck coat. Someone in my household suggested the logo was scrawled by a 7 year old... lol. She is actually qualified to make that call....

Whilst i have zero commercial intention im calling my boards fused and this board is the stubster.

has been a lot of things to learn. have had peter nitschke on speed dial talking through techniques and things.
super keen to get the next board moving forward.

you know how you finish something then step back to ponder and decide you can do better. well i did that and as a result sanded off the finish coat to start again.

when i wrapped the rail the final layer was 6oz. i should have wrapped the 4oz last to get a finer finish along the fabric edges.. long story short there were some uneven laps showing through the finish coat in a couple of spots. you can just see them in the photo above near the nose.

so i decided this week to sand it back, resand the laps and redo the finish coat. am now ready for the finish coat. again.

At least it didn't blow up !

there is still time...

Looking at the tape , the next color if more should be blue.
bTW I made a skull design that is remarkably similar.

the skull is something i keep using. 80's skate thing. heavily copied.

today was the day. not the conditions the board was designed to excel in but i figure if it cant handle the choppy water at my local then it can't handle the surf so I slipped down the bay for a test sail.

slipped being the word... the grip coast was an experiment using flyscreen and 2 pac. when i arrived a friend said i'd have no chance without boots and he was right. to the amusement of the locals, the first attempt was a big fail with me slipping and sliding and unable to get the board up to speed.

I borrowed some surfboard wax. waxed it up and headed back out..... success at last!!

board worked great. planes and turns really nicely. wind was 18-20 knots. water was choppy. the board sails like a wave board. i could feel the point where i positioned my weight right for the rocker and it released and took off. for conditions like today on flat water i would have benefitted from a bigger centre fin. i set it up with an 18cm centre and 11cm front fins which felt like it would be perfect in the waves. the good news is the fins don't feel draggy at all. really didn't feel the fins at all so that's a real positive sign.

next test will be in the surf. then i'll redo the grip coat.

Id suggest sugar coat for grip . That's all I've ever done and it lasts for ever .
When you said you borrowed some wax ....... I don't think they want it back when your finished with it

bit of an update.

today i had my first real go in waves on the stubster. it's been a struggle to get there. i managed a few bump and jump sessions pre xmas but the post xmas path has been a hit and miss affair. I had a 7 day surf trip cancelled in the first week of jan when my son got appendicitis. the 2 days leading up to the surf trip was 4-6 foot and way too big for my skill set. then we had a 3 day lockdown after that where i couldn't leave home. then i spent a few sessions trying to find perfect cross off waves at mooloolaba only to get skunked by the swell or the wind or both so went sup surfing instead.

so today i said enough is enough and headed to happy valley caloundra for some dead onshore, 2 foot slop in 8-14knots on a 5.6m blacktip.... pretty much conditions that traditionally i would have been sup sailing in and pretty much bottom level for what the board was designed for.

the board was great. it gets up and goes in the gusts, pops over waves no problems and takes off on the face. turns great as well. probably most surprised by how easy it turns considering how wide the tail is. board is also super stable shrugging off getting hit side on by white water. on a shortboard i would normally be tossed in the water but that didn't happen today. maybe just need bigger waves. lol..

i cannot wait to find some better wave conditions. for a while today a squall went through and the wind went cross shore which allowed me to pick up a few cleaner waves on a broad reach. we are talking small but i could start to feel what the board wants to do. the tail width helps the board get onto the waves and keeps the board planning though the fuller sections. i managed a few small cut backs and could feel the board accelerate as i hit each clean section.

so i built the board with the idea to make these types of sessions more fun. the sup kinda hits top speed on the face and ultimately i cant swing it around like a short board. i built this board primarily as a bridge between my sup and shortboard. something with better maneuverability and that was there for me today even in pretty poor conditions. another 3-4 knots and i would have been getting jumps too.

now i just need to sail it more to trust it and make sure i can still uphaul when the wind disappears. but so far the board has worked better than expected and seems to be a winner.

yeah real happy. kinda surprised the first revision worked so well.
just gotta use it as much as possible now and get some friends on it that are much more proficient in the surf to give their feedback too.

No Gestalt, your time is up! You've been teasing us for months on this very cool looking board and you have yet to provide a single pic of it in action. My patience is all but gone.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say we need to see this thing on wave, the suspense is killing us!!!
