Andrew, you mention the use of the 'Lap' button. My 245 has 5 buttons labeled- light, up, down, start/stop and back.
Which do I use for 'lap' please?

"back" is the lap button.

It will be interesting how this works on different watches. On my Fenix it is quite painful as it shows the lap details for 5 seconds or so before changing pages. I can live with it though as I don't need to look at the 1 hour page very often.

I have made a small change (which hopefully is an improvement)

New version 4.03 in the IQ Store

Finally got a sail yesterday and experienced 245 with the mini. 245 with old (now they are) data fields worked well. Thanks Andrew.

For those who want to see the session distance, I should point out there is a Datafield in the IQ Store called "Sailing Race Timer"

My Current preferred set up is:
Screen 1 - GPSTC V4.03
Screen 2 - Sailing Race Timer
Screen 3 - The default Garmin Map

After a month at LG using my datafields on a daily basis and discussing issues with others I have made some improvements to V4.

1. On start up all the user settings are displayed for a few seconds.
2. At the end of the session the final six GPSTC results are displayed to two decimal places. When you push stop this screen will display briefly, simply push start again (Resume) and you can then view this screen for as long as you like. You must have travelled at least 500 metres in the session for this to display.
3. I have added more filtering to remove possible spikes in the hour category caused by sudden jumps in the distance recorded, typically when the watch goes underwater.
4. I have added filtering to deal with similar spikes in the Nautical mile calculations, which disallow any nautical mile that has a significant spike in it.
5. Fixed a very minor error in the haversine formula, which will make no difference whatsoever.
6. Added the Garmin Descent watch to the build.

As I have previously mentioned I use another one of my datafields in combination with V4. It is called "Sailing Race Timer". Whilst it started life as a race countdown timer, I now use it all the time to simply display Time of Day and Distance Travelled. At LG I played around with a new feature that measures the straight line distance from your start point. This was really useful in planning Nautical Mile runs. I have just added a new feature which resets the start point by pressing the lap button. Therefore any point to point distance can be measured.
V1.4 is now in the IQ Store

Will a Garmin Vivactive 4S run the app. I'm not keen to spend $1k+ when I also have an LCD Motion on order. Garmin does offer other benefits too tho

I can't comment on the data fields on the Vivoactive. I have an earlier Vivoactive and it is a great general purpose watch that I use for many things including windsurfing.... but if I was after a Garmin specifically for windsurfing, I would not get one with a touch screen. With the touch screen it is almost unusable to use touch screen related features once it is wet. So I usually set mine up and start recording and then lock the touch screen and then just let it do its thing while I am sailing. I set it up with scrolling pages so I can see what I need without having to touch things. Sometimes I forget to start it before I get it wet, and it can be challenging to get it going once wet. There are other options with buttons for control that are better suited to Windsurfing. I think the run series watches are the cheapest not touch screen (245 etc.)

Just got the 245 music on special in jb hi-fi today. Looking forward to trying out your data field tomorrow. Been a while since I've had on water feedback as my gw 60 died a few months ago after 4 years. Should be the perfect combo with my mini motion for accuracy without costing an arm and a leg.

Yes my Datafields will run on the Vivoactive 4S. But as vosadrian says the touchscreen is hard to use.
If looking to purchase a new Garmin the 245 Music is clearly the best of the cheaper watches.
Currently selling for around AU$350. At times they drop to under $300.

Well V4.12 may have been OK, But 4.13 definitely wasn't. Crashes after sailing 0.5km.

So now up to V4.16
A few changes

I had to revert back to the original GPSTC field 1 and GPSTC field 2 whilst out sailing the other day, I had forgotten what they were like.
I highly recommend upgrading to V4

Next job is testing Fenix 7 versions on the simulator

Change made to Alpha Screen. So when still outside the 50m separation the number is shown in huge text filling the entire screen. Once an alpha is achieved then the large number is the alpha in Kts and the number below is the separation distance (as it was before the change).
I found at LG that the separation was hard to read, when travelling fast.

Also added support for all the new Fenix 7 watch variations (7, 7S and 7X)

Does the basic 245 not work with the data fields?

The 245 will work with the older datafields, but if buying a new watch then I strongly recommend the Music version.

I think the 245 Music is about $379 at JB Hifi or Rebel at the moment.
