From time to time we are asked about surf travel and there have been some wonderful surf trips shared on the forum.

Mainly a lot of questions on board size allowances,I fly with the V most occasions and sometimes with Garuda to Bali,on our last trip we flow with Air Asia from Bali to Singapore and Scoot back home, both wonderful. Crapstar have a deal for 500 return to Hawaii, now that is so ****** cheap it gets you thinking however conditions apply of course, one is month and the major one for me is board allowance size. For a December trip is a little over 1k,Hawaiian is 19 hundred and you can pretty much take any size board.I've stated my dislike for crapstar in the past due to there crap board allowance and poor service in the past.I'm keen to book but always said I would take my own board next time, well I'm not paying 1900
with Hawaiian however as there ads state the islands start when you hop on board this a true, I highly rate Hawaiian Airlines.I know a good place to hire good boards but as I noticed last trip it took a few days and revisits to find a good volume board, they were already hired out and you had to revisit until a better one come available.Hence wanting to take my own.Now after a long winded post sorry Scotty I know I've already lost youWould you get a custom board that fits crapstars allowance or suck it up like I did last trip? For the lighter weights its not an issue with hiring boards once there but I'm no light weight which sucks some times.

Well it looks like two choices you have ...... Pay up & do it your way or Pay up & hire it , save a little bit of coin & probably regret not having your own familiar stick

Fark mate - just pay the coin and do it your way - fark me you're a squllionaire bed mogul

I know Ronnie can do it alright...just last week saw one of his double stringer beauties he'd done for a big local, he'd named it .."Boofhead" ..a bit over 10' and 4" thick not that I'm inferring anything..so he can cater for big alright !

Given your other thread that you should be buying local then why not order one in HI and get it made so its ready for yr arrival. If you really like it after a few weeks and decide to bring it home then send it via ship freight or non speedy air freight. Alternatively sell when you leave. It might only cost you a few hundred bucks which would be cheaper than renting or taking your own. Loads of options.

I've always taken my own boards on surf trips. But last September we were going to Bankok, Phuket, Tokyo & then down to Southern Japan (Shikoku). Lugging a board around would have been a major pain. Renting was a lot of fun, coz I got to try out some different boards & was so much cruisier with just a suitcase.

If you know somewhere where you can rent decent boards, why not just get in contact with them & see if you can reserve a board with your desired dims

Then again, an excuse for a new board is always good too haha I did consider buying a 6'2, so I could go to Lombok on crapstar. But in the end it was just so much easier to go to Bali again.

So how much credence to you give the websites that market surf camps and boat trips? Some of the language they use just leaves me almost speechless. Pure sales stuff. It cracks me up to read what they write about places I have been to. Now I have been in the position of using them as an info source for my August trip and I am reluctant to believe even a 1/3 of what I read. Probably less. I asked a bloke who I know has been to many locations through Indo about one spot - he had not been but proceeded to quote me almost word for word what one of the websites has said!!

Cracks me up - but annoys me as well. Oh well thems the breaks aye

^^^^^ In that case get a board made locally and take it. That way you will be able to get some wave time on it before you get there.

You would have no probs getting volume and paddle of a 9'6+ into a 9fter. I work on this concept with a lot of my 8fters.

Besides, it will be a fun project. However I would pick a shaper who is not frightened to put some volume in a board. Cundith does high volume boards and of course SDR & Goddard. Or get McT to make you a 9ft cruiser which I think is just a high volume UFO.

Mac i see you problem and raise it one. I've not only got to sort out a board for me, I've got to find three others including for the kids. The wife has decided she wants to try surfing so a long board for her (That will also work for me) These board I'm going to buy local second hand. The websites are full of boards for sale..But for my short board i have started to look at getting a custom made. $375 or $400 with fins is cheap..

But my issue (which i think we are similar and is probably your issue also) do you take something your already happy with, Its a long way to not like what you get? Or do you just go for it and get it their? Im really nervous and can't decide. I don't want to not like something and ruin my trip, then you have the entire, do i take board covers, leg ropes all that?

First world problems

But if your going somewhere like Lombok from Perth its about 6'3. So like a nicely packed 6'2

It depends on what plane they're using.

If you've still got that firewire, its almost a one board quiver mate. They're super versatile those boards, should never have sold mine. Give the missus the SP to use, plenty of stability for her...I believe width & thickness is better for the beginner than length, coz you can turn the board round easier/faster

Yeah the Hellfire, i never went down the Dom road..I think ill pick them all up over there. $300 will buy me three boards for kids and wife/me..Something big for Waikiki..

The Northshore is a long way to go to be out gunned though.. as i said, first word issues.

Sadly i am traveling Jetstar as we used FF points but a question will a short board be any extra freight? Haven't checked
