Apparently something like this works well in longer lengths too. Again haven't tried one but thought outlines might give you some ideas.

Now we're talking Toobz!!
That first one is pretty much what I've been sketching this afternoon. I've been leaving the tail wider and running the rails a bit straighter. My fear being that it might be all too easy to make a board that tracks and trims stunningly well but isn't so good at direction changes!
Obvious solution is to pull the tail in like they've done. Good food for thought and a nice point of departure, thanks!

That second one is almost but not quite incut. Do you remember where you heard reference to longer ones?

Thanks McHenry - how long is that yellow feller? How did it go in a bit of power? What's the fin setup? Much rocker?

No can't really remember where I read it Salty. I've seen a fair few in the 6-7 foot range online and I know Mick likes plenty of foam/length in his boards.

Few pics for ya.

This one was a quad - 8 x 23 x 3

I never had it out in bigger waves but a fellow breezer that I bought it off of had and certainly loved it.

Was getting some nice ones yes, but had to go to Newcastle again. Home tomorrow.

Cool animation!

Has anyone got to know any kind of long fishish kind of board? My mind is turning over some ideas, I'm imagining something well longer than a proper fish but still short by midlength standards. trying to dream up an all rounder travel board. A stretched fish with a full outline, but nice fine rails, two keel fins. Really just a way of getting more planing area in a shorter package than I can get away with with a single. Not interested in quads, not asking for specific board recommendations just thoughts, ideas or experiences. Cheers!

Hey dude,

You should come borrow my Christenson Fish and see how you like it. It's 6'4" and you'd surf it easy as it has plenty of volume. Has more glide than most fish i've surfed as its a very traditional Lis style fish however what he does differently is thin out the tails which reduces its wave catching a bit but really makes it fly out of turns..

Nice! That certainly proves the concept. Thanks.
Think I'm aiming somewhere exactly half way between an old school fish and that Vish 8 footer. Maybe 6'8 - 6'10 ish with an outline that falls right between the two as well. Exciting!!

we're back, and banks have been pretty fun on the Arm, river was on the other night too but I had a date night so missed it... Let us know if your up in town and pop round for a beer or a cuppa.

I'd be super keen to sneak down when your shaping too, i'm trying to get up to speed to start recycling some old tipshop beaters into some experiments

Thanks guys, Dream Catcher looks like a pretty straight up modern fish to me, Sea Gypsy is kindof similar to what I ride now. Interestingly I was running my hands over a 6'8 Nautilas earlier today, nice looking board and kind of heading in the direction I'm imagining... anyone surfed one in 2' and 6' ? Looks to be more optimised for the bigger stuff to my mind, pretty pulled in, fair bit of rocker.
Just to be clear, I make my own boards so am just using the forum to explore the concept, see who's ridden things similar to my imaginings and hopefully get some kind of feedback on the idea.

Yep, I have a 6'10 nautilus quad. Bought to take to indo. Handled it well.

I Don't really put it in the bigger wave category. They surf more like a normal fish with a stretched outline. The longer rail helps when it's a bit bigger but they aren't a big wave board. They are pretty loose in the rear.

Have you got a tail measurement on your board? You know, the usual 1 foot up width...

I just threw the tape on it.
It's 21.25 wide.
Point to point of the Swallow is 8.25
12 inches from Point of swallow the Tail is about 15inches wide and a foot down the Nose is about 15 wide also.

They aren't as pulled in as the photos of them make them look.
They carry a fair bit of thickness through the middle too which you don't see in photos.

This thread is driving me crazy - soooo many cool looking boards!

Wets the appetite to save up for another custom..its just a dream at the moment though.

Have talked to a few people lately about mids and it blows me away how some people write off mid-lengths for surfing good waves - give me a well made mid for good waves anyday!

Personally... I prefer the way the more eggy mids turn vs the fish style boards. I find the fish has more squirt and turns tighter/more vertical but the mids hold speed better and draw out the turns... don't get me wrong, i LOVE the fish and its super convenient as its shorter but the feel of burying the rail and the trim of Lizzy and the TC are just in a world of there own.

This dude is pretty dry but also pretty thorough...

Yeah, it's highly possible that I'm right with you on that Andy regarding the eggy mids and how much I love them vs the fish thing. I'm just toying with this idea, might go nowhere, might make one....

Here's a pic showing a 7'4 mid that would pretty much nail a travel board for me. I only take one board going anywhere, I just could not be stuffed carrying more around. Alongside is my first ideas for this stretched fishish concept - 6'10 x 21.5, 13" between the pins, 16.5" tail. I'm looking for an outline that will encourage all that we love in our single eggs, but maybe have just a slightly wider range.

Heading to Roaring today, feel like a long drive?

I reckon my c bucket has wider range then the nautilus.
I would ride it in nearly anything I dare paddle out in.
Maybe just a personal preference but 2+1 Narrow pin tail eggs are my preference as a one board quiver then a wide swallow fish. My tails on the eggs are narrower then the fish.

I reckon wide swallows get hung up in the top of the wave when it gets bigger. I find them fun in knee to a bit over head high but the ones I've owned I haven't loved in bigger waves, the speed on the quad is great but sometimes especially on my backhand I find sometimes they get hung up on take off.

I like the first one... and I'd have to agree with SP, the pintail has far better hold, is more neutral when it gets bigger or hollower and I find turns better.

If you need it to catch smaller waves then just hold a bit more volume in the tail. It's amazing how much difference in the wave catching side of things that makes between my Lizzy which is super foiled out Vs the TC which holds heaps more volume. My idea is I would actually love to re-shape the Lizzy with the extra tail volume from the TC as It doesn't need to be 8'4", could easily be shorter... That's where i'm going with my next board I think, the perfect partner to Lizzy... I could then easily 3 board quiver with a 9'6" log.

That said, I surfed Lizzy today at North Cliffo beachies and she went UNREAL, paddled into some tiny ones I thought I had no chance on and made a few real late ones... Best board in the quiver, best board i've surfed EVER... still need to do the review too...

But then I have a mate who's addicted to fish, its all he surfs, he loves the skatey feeling and shorter rail... So I guess given all your other boards are eggs, maybe the fish would be cool as something different but probably not the ideal travel board
