Well, welcome to the hood martman

Great call back to the topic, old bar down
Newcastle way my thinks I'll check
it out on the cams tomorrow.

Thinking of heading up to Noosa to get smashed
with the swell on the way
Coastal watch has it we will have 10.8 foot on Saturday
on the GC and if your not on a ski your not going out
So Noosa maybe the only option for a wave even though
the Noosa Festive of surfing is on atm. 3 hour drive, perfect
Noosa hmmmmmmmm sounds good.

PS , keep the reports coming because the guy's in WA keep
saying, there are NO waves in the west the wild doggie west

Isn't there a place called Old Bar near Taree at the mouth of the Manning?

Hey 62mac your geography skills are good , you just have to apply the breaks at the Taree exit and head east for 12 k and you will find various point and beach breaks within about 8 kilometres of coastline to satisfy a surfers appetite , long and short, oh and the twisted seafood takeaway at Wallaby pt can satisfy the other appetite , Thanks for the welcome man good luck at noosa this week , go hard yeeha

Never been there but driven past the turn off a bjillion times.

Anyhow, after I asked that question an hour or two ago I went straight to Google earth and looked at a few pics, very nice place.

My problem is that once I'm on google earth, I can never get off it in anything under an hour. Ended up going as far north as Yamba before I got tired.

With a bit of luck I may be going past old bar again on Friday as I make my way to Woopi. I should pull in this time a take a gander.

thanks for the tip, it's now looking more likely that I'll go because I think I've managed to overcome a bit of a problem at work.

I was going to get on the road at sparrows fart, maybe 2.30 so I could be at Scotts head for a surf at around 8.30.

But if I'm running a bit late, Old Bar may be a better bet. They're about the same distance from the highway.

I'll drag the tent out from under the stairs tonight, I just love camping, I can afford to stay just about anywhere but I still prefer to rough it.

Just got back from my little trip, some good some bad but on the whole, it's nice to get away.

Most days were a howling Northeaster.

Friday late morning:

Scotts Head about 500m north of the point and I had to share it with a bunch of bloody pasty pommy blokes and tarts at a surf school. I drove for 5 hours to cop the same thing I tried to get away from in Sydney.

Friday Late arvo: after I set up camp in woopi I went to Arrawarra Point, it wasn't great but it was probably the longest and best session I had, everyone out there is just so courteous. The only thing I dislike about Arrawarra Point is the paddle out, it's a whopper. And if you make the mistake of staying on for the inside section, you have to do it all over again.

I said to one of the local guys that if they felt like buying themselves a rip for the place, I would be happy to chip in $50

Saturday morning: Shelly beach which is effectively back beach Emerald or if you like, the extreme northern end of Moonee beach, good wave but a very draining shore dump.

Saturday arvo: Woolgoolga point, I should not have gone in but I just wanted to blow away a few cobwebs, one wave and I was out.

Sunday morning: Emerald beach, left and rights off the beach and point with a few coming through over 4ft.

Sunday arvo: Sandy Back Beach, It may have another name but that's what most locals call it, it was also probably the biggest hike. You park at the boat ramp and the southern end of Sandy Beach and then you hike down to the headland and across to the southern side of the Headland where it's protected from the Northeaster. The headland is a strange one because it's got this low section in the centre of it with a bit of a dune you need to climb up.

The dune would normally be a bit of a chore with a 9'6" mal in tow but because I had a howling wind behind me, I just turned the board sideways and almost sailed up it.

I had that spot all to myself for almost an hour, it had a nice left off the rocks and a bit further south there was a little bommy working.

Once another guy came out on a shorty, I just left him to the point break and moved over to the bommy.

It was dead funny walking back down that dune with a mal in that wind.

Monday: I just drove for 7 hours and I did check out Old Bar at midday but but then the wind had got into it and everything was stuffed.

Got one more day off before I go back to work so I'm hoping for a bit of local action

Apart from Arrawarra on a very small day, I didn't take any pics of the places I surfed because most were too hard to get to while I carried a camera.

This pic of Arrawarra Pt may give you an idea of the distance, it's very late in the arvo and the swell had all but gone however there was one desperate out there getting the last of the dregs. That boat way off in the distance is not all that far out from the 1st break.

This is a place called Corindi, you can see Arrawarra Pt at the southern end. I didn't go in because the point does not give enough protection from the NE wind on that day however I've see it make an excellent left that you can really tuck into on its day. Plus it's incredibly close to the highway, you just turn off at the Amble Inn pub.

This image is of Split Solitary (if you look at the island you can easily work out the name) although I did not go in here I wanted to give you an idea of how beautifully clean the water was and tell you about something that happened at Back Beach Sandy on Sunday arvo.

As previously mentioned, I was on my own and just lazily paddling back out when what seemed like the entire ocean beneath me turned a strange shimmering silvery brown colour.

I sat up to see what it was and I was smack in the middle of the biggest school of largish fish I have ever seen, they were were probably mullet or possibly whiting but it seemed like there were thousands all just swarming around under my board.

That's what it was like whenever I went out, I would always see some sort of marine life jumping about. Great spot if you're a fisherman.

Hey guys - this is a coupla years ago now but have surfed it like this 3 times !!
And on one occassion even BIGGER. It is the best point break in the land but it can punish you if you get careless.

Arrawarra is just north of Woolgoolga, when I was a lot younger I used to walk there along the beach from Woolgoolga.

Woopi is a non stop 6 hour drive from Sydney so I guess it's 4.5 hours from Newcastle.

www.google.com.au:443/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode&q=arrawarra+nsw&sll=-25.335448,135.745076&sspn=48.685338,72.685547&ie=UTF8&hq&hnear=Arrawarra+New+South+Wales&ll=-30.058379,153.203917&spn=0.011663,0.017745&t=h&z=16

You get to the point via the Mullaway turn off, don't make the mistake of going into the 1st Arrawarra turn off if you're traveling south, you'll only end up at a tourist park miles from the point and they'll probably tell you to piss off if you try to walk through the park to the beach.

Mullaway and the beach in between the two (Mullawarra) are also worth a good look.

As you can see from the satellite image, the reef comes out a long way and can be a bit treacherous even on small day on the inside when you think you have a bit of water under you and find out there's bugger all.
