SUPs at the 49th Surf Safari

For the first time SUPs were included in today's Surf Life Saving Tasmania Surf Surfari.
Competing in the 'Short' course of 12km a small but enthusiastic collection of paddlers lined up next to all manner of surf craft for the race from Sandy Bay Beach to Hinsby Beach at Taroona and back.
An exciting race ensued with the lead changing many times. Ben Stockwin led the field for the first third, with John Fugslang hot on his tail (literally) before John put his foot down to pass Ben and take the lead.
By the halfway mark Matt Steele had finally passed Ben also to hold a narrow second place until the homeward leg when it became a tussle between Matt and John for line honours.
Choosing a course along the coast, as opposed to Johns choice of coming home via Bellerive, Matt managed to squeak past to take first place closely followed by John and shortly behind, Ben.
Dave Smiths tactic of holding off for the sea breeze to sail home past the field on a full tank nearly came off, but unfortunately the breeze did not read Dave's game plan, with the sea breeze arriving at the finish line 20 minutes after Dave.
Thanks to SLSC and Craig McKinnon for including SUPs in this years event, the first of an action packed SUP summer.

Tomorrow, tech race open to 12'6" & surf SUPs, random prize draw for a carbon paddle supplied by Naish and Jay Sails & Sup, come along and support Carlton Park SLSC.

Excellent conditions greeted competitors at today's race, with clean shoulder high waves pushing through and a slight cross shore breeze you would be hard pressed to find better.
The father/son combo of Mathew & Jake Steele made an early break, closely followed by John Fuglsang, but several falls by both Jake & John saw Mathew stretch out his lead and was never really troubled for the rest of the race. Mick Hawes and Dave Smith were having their own tussle for 4th until a tangled legrope on Dave's board let Mick slip away. Claire Vervaart cleaned up in the women's division and as usual Tony Leitch smashed it in the O/70s.

CARLTON 11KM PADDLE=FUN FOR EVERYONE

Initial perfect condition met a field of 15 for the annual Carlton River paddle. Welcome additions to this years race included a short course and a strong contingent from beyond the Cascade line (also known as NW Coast).
Timed to make the most of the tidal change from incoming to outgoing competitors set out in sunny conditions with each finding their own challenge throughout the race. Whether it was Luke taunting Ben the entire race, only to get serious in the last 3km and leave him speechless (and breathless) or Mat Steele doing his best Solo man impersonation after arriving late, every one found a way to push themselves and final times indicated a vast improvement in SUP talent in Tasmania.

Congratulations to all competitors and wonderful to see new faces and an ever growing female contingent.

Bicheno SUP Challenge (rebooked) 24-25 March

Yes it's back on, get along and support this event, heaps of divisions to cater for all, opens, age groups, 10' and racing.
Inline with the new national rule to come into effect this year the technical race will be open to all 14' boards and under.
Entries will be up on the Surfing Tasmania website shortly??

Another great TASSIE SUP event yesterday at the Bicheno Surf East Coast SUP. The first round of the state titles was held in conditions that were challenging to say the least.
A great night was had at the Gulch Fish and Chip shop with all food and drinks supplied by our sponsors.
There will be a few happy faces lined up to cash in their vouchers later this morning.

PBBR Cold Water Classic: Putting the "classic" before the "cold"

The PBBR cold water classic is not a competition for the faint-hearted..but then again, that goes without saying, really; we breed 'em tough down our way. A hale and hearty core crew braved the rain and scant conditions, firmly putting the classic in front of the cold, in true Dodges style. "Big-wave" Dave was happy to down-size his expectations, to take part in not only the Sup, but also the long-board division, wowing the crowds with some fancy footwork (was that the fabled "tassie two-step", Dave?) , and smooth slides. Prezzo Packo averaged at least one stunt per wave, though seemed disappointed to later learn that "switch-foot" and " arabesque" do not officially count as scorable manoeuvres. Soz, Packo..don't go changing, tho..Was awesome to have Matt enter the comp today, and while he was not rewarded with classic Mecca Bowl surf magic, he was at least given a rash-vest that matched his surfboard as compensation. Fair enuff. Fantastic to have Brody on board, giving Pops a run for his money in the points stakes; I don't want to cause trouble in the family or anything, but I will let it be known that the scores were very, very close. And Jon..late to the party (and, disappointingly, without face-paint), but nonetheless keen as mustard to take part in the longboard action, donned the orange (orange!) and ripped into those Park Beach runners much to the delight of the gathering paparazzi (who had no doubt heard the rumour that a former eighties rock-star had swapped his gold brocade for black neoprene..now that's a huge "yieeeeeewwwww")
Ah, the Cold Water Classic, eh...

Heading your way next month to chill out ??, I was wondering about PFDs for sups over there, mandatory or not or if mandatory what do the locals do. Really dont to wear one but have a couple of options if that is the done thing. Thanks.

Hey Darbs, it is mandatory to wear a PFD 50 + a legrope at all times unless you are surfing, most crew use an inflatable bumbag, if you are surfing a 4/3 steamer and booties will be needed also even though the water will be warming slightly, but there could be some snow melt

Have a bum bag and a vest , steamer is only three two I think but will have to do and booties. Will be all around the island for three months in a motor home. Love catching waves plus taking a 14 footer as well for longer paddles. Pretty keen on the Eaglehawk neck area after following your posts and your favourite river mouth. So many places to paddle there have done six trips in the past 10 years though only supped the last couple. On the S.O.T on the 16th Sept probably have the first couple of weeks up north or east coast then head your way hopefully it might warm up a bit. I will keep up with Tassie talk as to any events if I am in the area. Thanks again mate.
