^^^agreed it's a race kite we are free riding on, I've been consistent on that in my posts on this thread but it is worth mentioning that Ozone's own website shows it as highly suitable for free riding also...

Hmm, I am wondering if this is a sign of things to come that all Ozones for this coming year will be in D2? Does anyone really know if D2 is any better than D1 or what ever the ordinary canopy material is and if so why and will the Edges stand up to freestyle/wakestyle abuse that so many other kites and the Edge do not seem to come up to? for example does that one tiny extra minute thread in the canopy material really deter that much tearing ability or enhances it's flying characteristics. I can't really see from other companies giving any evidence or science to the fact apart from their promotion of "our Kites are D2" and we are now upping the price (invented by North, Of course).

On each piece they had a small cut and this demo thingy was given to you to 'tear' a piece with your hands on row 1 then try the same on row 2. The difference was very evident so gave you a tactile way of seeing for yourself, that infact the D2 material is better or rather harder to tear.

Bit of a gimick but very effective demonstration.

The edge is awesome for free riding. Its my fav boosting kite and I can do freestyle on it, it pops big but has just little to no line slack

For example Pudla won the Asian freestyle tour on edges.

I would be happier if they went to a dual channel plastic tube so that both the depower and safety line are enclosed. It seems absurd to have multiple, loose ropes going through a bar when it is so easy to enclose them. Plenty of other manufacturers have already gone this way.

They should get rid of the floats and put soft bar ends that protect the board and the rider from damage.

soft bar ends would be a nice addition .

there has been some testing about the softer bar ends but it was found that you loose a bit of that direct feel. Andy Yates got some proto bars with moulded soft bar ends for his C4s

Personally I'm not convinced that the not tearing is a good thing in some cases, more likely to end up with a stretched/deformed canopy than a nice clean tear that can be easily repaired.

... true, but I've been lucky I haven't had to test it yet, either way, the new stuff must be better if other brands are now allowed to use it too!

Just wondering, is the LE material the same in the new to older Edges? For all this arguing going on, I got lost on some of the detail and was wondering if it was the LE or the canopy that was 'fatiguing' or 'failing'??

And while I'm wonding, does location and hours of use or hours sitting on a sunny or windy beach have anything to do with it i.e. solar UV exposure on sunny tropical or windy WA ect?

Ozone prices/value/performance 3 years was excellent and many new kiters purchased and enjoyed. Prices 2013 19 edge and bar 2600, 2014 19 edge 3399 ,really unrealistic. Ozone wake up or possibly you might find a reserved seat next Ford and Holden. Possibly why there were less new kites on the water this season.

Thats an awesome price .... Just add a Cab bar thats nearly. $700 and you too can enter there biggest Loser kite races :)

Maybe their warranty on this includes new for old replacement if you do tear it hence the price?

Pimping bells-and-whistles of new edition ahead of release date and price all makes sense now.

If the pricing of the legendary Ozone Edge had been the first contribution to the thread, then 3,738 visitors over the last 10 days to this advertising thread could have saved their time and read relevant gear reviews that sits in their predominantly free-ride budget.

Maybe this thread should move to the "Racing" category given that nobody but racers or "special people" will be making a new Edge acquisition any time from now on.

Looking at the online store, those prices you quote seem at least $500 too high especially considering the exchange rate?

And interestingly a similarly sized Chrono to the edge is only about $400 more expensive (I guess that 50% extra labour/materials isn't worth that much after all) so you might be better off just getting the better kite for a few dollars more

... prices maybe getting higher but the kites are certainly lasting longer too, and all across a lot of brands from what I have seen. Besides, if it performs great then its all worth it,,,, isn't it??

yep that's me too generally.

Pick up a season old, ex demo or near new for 50% off retail. lets say $1000. sell it 2-3 years later for $500.

Sometimes if the deal is good enough I punt for new kites. 2 of my 5 kites I bought new. not supprisingly the smaller sizes.

timing it right for purchasing is how ive always done it, unless the kite has been totally revamped, its not worth purchasing new , as for the edge its had a few tweeks here and there, but only in a good racers hands youd know,if the competition had been closer then youd see bigger changes, these quoted prices are what you want to make of it, speak with your shop for the correct price, my shop is selling last years 19 for just under$1700

RRP is what most people use as ammo in the price wars... the prices for Australia are $800 more expensive than the US for the same product, and yet the exchange rate is US$1 = AU$1.06...! Shipping must be by chauffeured Mercedes.

One good thing about Ozone versus say, Cabrinha - the bars haven't changed since Jesus rode a dinosaur so you don't really need to buy a new one... save some bucks there.

If kites are getting better in leaps and bounds in only one year... makes you wonder what they've been doing so wrong and why we buy that junk at all I'm still using 2011 Crossbows and haven't found anything that makes me want to get rid of all of them for a new quiver. There are a few that would be suitable replacements but it'd be through gritted teeth that I'd fork over anything near RRP though...!

Well the answer to that is that kites aren't getting better in leaps an bounds every year. Its all marketing hype! Its now only small incremental changes. Mostly these days I see changes making the kites more specific in one area. That can make them awesome for their intended purpose and horrible for anything but that.

PS I wont pay RRP either. I simply can't afford it. I have too many sports, too many kids, not enough income and far to bigger mortgage to pump full retail for bits of fabric that can easily be trashed in one rinsing in the waves.

Big K our wages are significantly higher than in America. Add less economies of scale as well I'd say that explains the higher cost ...maybe, I'm no economist.

RRP is still the starting point for all market and individual negotiations, so the bar is still set pretty high regardless. But I'd say it would be the same for all the big kite companies for the same or similar sized kites. What's a new dyno gonna set you back?

So yearly upgrades make no sense to me, but that's just my opinion. If I had a total failure (like my old 7m) I'd seriously consider the market then probably go with a year or two older model as well? call me stingy :D

Seriously, wages are high here but so is cost of living, although interest rates are about 1% so people don't save or invest much. That means SOME things are retarded expensive -- kites etc are almost 100% over US RRP?!

Point being, "local" markets with their own pricing in this global age is idiotic IMO (Switch) and for what they are, kites seem grossly over-priced.

For us old hands? I'm sure we paid about the same when we started :D
