I came across this - not kiting with a foil but - from what Ive read about foiling - very gutsy !!

Had a win this afternoon - finally it's starting to click and i managed and hour and half session covering 23-odd kms.

I think I'm up to session 8 or 9 - under 10 hours in total Id say, and today was the first time i felt in control (mostly) of my ride height and could enjoy it

Finally!! Must have put in 20 sessions, mostly on river, and now comfortable on both tacks for long runs up wind and off the wind. Even got a couple of jumps in- weird feeling especially if you don't get the hydro and aero lifts coordinated.... Next step toe side and then transitions. The LF foil fish has been great to learn on and only now testing it's top speed. Emailed LF in the US about a new faster set of foils ( higher aspect ratio) and they say they will release a set in June/July ( presumably to catch northern hemisphere summer). Am now curious to at least trying one of the all carbon set ups.

THANKs for all the encouragement from the Perth foil brigade.....you were right....it really is about persistence , time on the water and patience. In answer to the second poster on this thread.....YES, it most certainly is worth the hassle - average low wind days have turned into great days thanks to foiling

Man that design is so dumb, and at that price point... who is it aimed at??
I would think by the time you are willing to set back $4,500 for a 1 piece carbon foil, you would no longer need the "safety bars"
And if it is for beginners, why make it one piece?
If a beginner was wealthy enough to buy this I'm sure they are smart enough to see the problem of having to replace the whole thing because of a cracked wing

Were you off Scarbrough on Sunday? Saw a foil going up wind at a great speed!!

Not me Darth - I wish - probably one of the PKR crew - they move upwind at improbable angles and speed. I'm still hanging out at the river with occasional trip to saftey bay.

Was out testing LF with carbon speed wings today all went very well

They look good pilotpete! Home made? Are they quicker / more stable?

Yes good speed much less drag than the std but require more forward speed to get on the foil to begin with which is normal for higher AR wings. Wings are carbon x4 layer with tri-axle core very strong and stiff. Stability is good and ride was very smooth, note the back wing is mounted on top of fuselage to avoid any turbulent flow from front wing, this does require an additional two mounting holes to be drilled and tapped for 6 mm threads.

The north foil is not a one piece design! Maybe try the foil first before bagging it. i haven't tried it but a lot of my friends say its a pretty good foil to learn on and you don't get cut!

You guys and all of Sir V's enthusiastic posts are slowly but surely bringing me round to joining up.

I live near the beach, but downwinders are generally too hard to organise in limited time off, plus winds are often light when I could go. I can see a foil (+ foil kite perhaps) letting me get out in the ocean in lighter winds, have fun & stay upwind easily even when there's a strong sweep.

I'm a bit hesitant as I bought a race board and never got into it - I was pretty time poor and when I could actually get out I just found myself grabbing a TT so I could have fun / relax rather than eat it as a beginner again. Plus it was awkward to carry as it wouldn't fit under one arm (up to nearly 1km from home if tide was out) Sold it at a big loss (sure I'm not the only one there).

Ha! I'm old enough to appreciate when someone calls me young

I'm definitely keen, but probably at least 6 months away due to life factors (surgery, baby, etc).

The horue lightweight foil would be a great 2nd foil I reckon, definitely not for learners. I like the simple, small, strapless board too, they're about to start selling them.
