Hey Diver
Judging by your Avatar (One of the most arrogant, self obsessed footy players ever) I wouldn't expect any other sort of response from you.

Does anyone even remember that the vote was previously taken and the answer was NO. It is getting a bit much that we are being asked for a fourth time about something that has been voted on before.

How many different versions of NO do you people need?

Spoken like a true idiot!

get a grip mate-no need to get snotty. Im sure it wont be the end of the world whichever way it goes tomorrow.
If its that important to you, then perhaps you should move to east coast to enjoy your beloved DLS.

Well said diver

Not gettin "snotty" shark.
Just sick of the arrogance of people saying "we already said No".
Does that mean the whole generation that weren't able to vote last time shouldn't get a say?
Whether it gets in or not I hope it (and many other issues) are discussed and voted on in future years, so we can continue to evolve and improve our way of life for the majority.
Or are those who said "No" before that wise that they know what is best for future generations.

Using that argument maybe you'd like to re-run the referendum about Federation?

Anyway, the NO vote has won.
I voted yes but only because I windsurf and I can sail longer after work.
However I agree with many of the principles the NO people cite.

thats not true, I was in the same situation but needed only sign a form (which they filled out on the spot) and voted.
Interestingly though 2 of the other officers present said what you said but the other (upon looking closer) corrected them.

They had a big pile of the forms on the desk.

Mark
Yeah I would like to re-run it.
Along with a few other issues like trading hours, the death penalty, euthanasia and a whole host of others.
I can't see a fairer way than revisiting important issues every few years as attitudes towards them change.
Though because its such a huge cost to taxpayers it would be nice to have them all in the same referendum (say every 5 or 10 years).
But that would be too logical for those running this circus.

But as you said "Anyway, the NO vote has won."
Which personally I think sucks but Im glad we all got a say and that the majority have won. Nothing fairer than that.

Hope its looked at again in another 5 or 10 years!

Why??? the people have spoken!! Yet again!!

Just a few stats which may be of interest.

Taking the country portion out DLS, still would have gone down on Metro only.

Country
Total Voters: 300,170
Yes: 59,833
No: 150,238
Vote Counted: 69.98%
Variance in favour of No: 90,405

Metro areas which voted "Yes"
Total Voters: 529,814
Yes: 206,796
No: 174,189
Vote Counted: 71.91%
Variance in favour of No: -32,607
21 locations

Metro areas which voted "No"
Total Voters: 511,570
Yes: 159,902
No: 207,359
Vote Counted: 71.79%
Variance in favour of No: 47,457
21 locations

A bit of history

1975
Yes: 250,644
No: 290,179
Total Votes 540,823
Yes: 46.34%
No: 53.66%

1984
Yes: 329,536
No; 392,340
Total Votes: 721,876
Yes: 45.65%
No: 54.35%

1992
Yes: 399,441
No: 452,985
Total Vote: 852,426
Yes: 46.86%
No: 53.14%

2009
Yes: 426,531
No: 531786
Yes: 44.51%
No: 55.49%

This was my 4th DLS "experiment", and I've had to vote for 3 of them, my opinion hasn't changed over the years.

4 times in a row now the WA public has voted against DLS, the concept is not new, the people are not stupid, it's just the Majority of Western Australians don't want it.

The DLS crew reckon the "no" voters should be shipped of to Queensland, that does not make good comercial sense, it would be far cheaper to ship a bunch of whining "yes" voters to NSW and Vic as there is far less of them.

I think it's fair to assume that a vast majority of younger people voted in favour of Daylight Savings.

However, we are a top-heavy country (WA included) - if you look at the age demographic, we're pretty old and getting older. From the people I've talked to, a majority of the older crew voted against Daylight Savings.

It follows that when the dinosaurs die we'll get DLS!

About 30 thousand children a day die from starvation.
We spend about ten million dollars trying to work out whether we should get out of bed an hour earlier or not.

Only problem with that is that the youth of 75 and 84 probably voted no in 2009 and the youth of 2009 with probably vote no next time they try it on in 2026, or something like that anyway.

That's where you are wrong, one of the Pro DLS organisers said that had they made a mistake by only promoting DLS to the "Young crowd" as he put it, they thought that they would have it there because of them, but they miscalculated their liking of it.

What most people here fail to realize is that and I'm really say this but "windsurfing and Kitesurfing" are really minor minor sports in the grand scheme of things.

Here's a few groups of sports people who most likely didn't like DLS

*Surfers who surf before work, who lost an hour of water time (a personal favorite of mine as I love the true dawn patrol)
*Rowers who HAVE to train at first light to avoid wind but also the multitude of boats out on the water after 6am
*Joggers who job before work rather than the heat of the evening.
*Windsurfers and Kitesurfers on shift work, the Seabreeze doesn't come in any earlier with DLS but they have to get of the water an hour earlier to get to work.
*Scuba divers who enjoy night diving

Out of the people I know through work and play pro and con is spread fairly evenly across age groups.

But apart from that I believe that "Yes" voters attitude to the "No" voters most likely cost them dearly.

I'll be honest, I take the p1ss out of the pro argument, it was easy to do if i was bored, I do understand some of the business arguments and some of the recreational arguments, but what really makes me want to take the p1ss is the attitude.

If you don't like DLS you were either:
Old
Stupid
Retarded
A dinasaur
A woman
Anti Business
No life
Can't afford new curtains
A farmer
and many many more
or all of the above

I'll let you in on a little secret, the only people who really believe the curtains will fade are the "yes" voters, they're the ones who are constantly bringing it up.

I'll offer some more advise, if you want to sell something then sell it before the customer tries it, the best looking car in the world is the object of desire untill the punter drives it and discovers its a dog.

I'll offer some more sales advise, if you want to win people over to your side do it with proper argument rather than what I've posted above.

After 4 conclusive referendums
Thats
Four conclusive referendums
Thats
IV conclusive referendums
Thats
IIII conclusive referendums
Thats
2^2 conclusive referendums
Thats
3+1 conclusive referendums
Thats
one more than we needed conclusive referendums

and they reckon us "no" voters are thick

So....

I figured that if they were clever enough to vote "Yes" they would be clever enough to spell it, The WAEC did make allowances for the Yes voters who couldn't spell "Yes" by making a "Tick" acceptable but in reality that was stretch some of their capabilities.

It is unfortunate that although the right thing to do would be to help out the poor unfortunate Windsurfers and kiters who couldn't spell "Yes" or create a "tick" on a page, the WAEC frowns on people helping others fill in their vote forms no matter how sad and pathetic they look.

Hmm. Elmo and Greenroom, 2 blokes who agree but can't admit it.

Warning: long.

I voted YES from the purely selfish point of view that I can sail more easily after work if I finish at 1600 and it is a 90min drive to the water. BUT.....

It sh1ts me really badly that if you are against DLS you must be dumb or something, apparently.

Fact: it is harder on country people. Try to get kids to sleep at 9:00pm in 35deg heat and not a whisper of breeze. School still starts at 0900 regardless, and for kids that have to take a 1hr bus trip that means getting up at 0630. Let me do the math for the YES people. Kids get up at same time but actaully get to sleep 1 hr later. FACT. Kids with 1hr less sleep = bad. Simple.

Fact: the curtain fading was one dumb old woman who made a dumb error 15yrs ago. Now the YES crowd dig it up with monotonous regularity to take the p1ss. Not one person in the NO crowd actually believes it, get over it you condescending w^nkers.

Fact: forget the stats on traffic crashes etc. They are all from overseas where it gets really dark at 6:00pm in summer. An extra hour of daylight (that is, peak hour is LIGHTER) reduced crashes. In WA it reall has no bearing and no WA study has ever been done. So it is ridiculous to talk about it may reduce crashes.

Fact: power use goes up due to more aircons turned on.

Now the rant. Dullsville: Geez that term sh1ts me

-I like the fact I don't have to pay for parking at the beach. Any beach.
-I like the fact we don't have ethnic gangs roaming the streets
-I like the fact I can go for a windsurf or fish ANYWHERE along the Swan River. None of it is inaccessable due to boardwalks, restaurants and boat clubs.
- I like the fact that anyone on a middle class income can be 20min from the City, 20min from the beach for a kite/windsurf, 20min from the airport, 20min from the entertainment precints of Northbridge and Fremantle, and within 1hr can be at a really top wavesailing spot. Try to get ALL that in Sydney or Melbourne.
- I like the fact that within 30min of the City I can mountain bike, and fish, and catch marron, and go shooting, and fly a glider (real one), ride a land yacht, have access to MX tracks (heaps), put my boat in the ocean at one of 20 spots and catch world class fish, or scuba dive on majestic reefs.

If the opposite of Dullsville is 24hr shopping and stress cos we're always working, something that looks like Singapore, Sydney or Saudi, I'm not interested, sorry.

If you want Tokyo, move your arse over there and stop calling Perth Dullsville.

Thats why I voted YES. Plain and simple and for no other reason what so ever.

I have young kids and sorry but they arent the kinda kids that you can put to bed any old time. It has to be dark. Try having a 6 and 3 year old up and about at 9pm on a windless night. IT SUCKS! AND I HATE IT! We had to put black sheets and velcro them on the outside of their bedroom windows.

But like Mark said, Im selfish and when its blowing and there are waves, I want to be out there windsurfing every second of the day.

I finish work at 3pm. It just means that with DLS I dont have to wait for the weekend to travel out of town with the rest of the wind junkies in Perth. And if I stay local it means that I can drive safely home at the speed limit, play with my kids and still make it for a windsurf.

Imagine finishing work during summer at 2pm!

Like I said before, you have to be a real kook if you windsurf and voted NO for DLS.

As Elmo said elsewhere - time to get over it for another decade or so. Selfishly I think its a shame - for my WS and kids (more time to do things outside with them when i get home after work). Also think it would have helped the local WS/KS shops, with more people WS/KS more often. But thats life.

I feel saddend that WA'ers have once again resisted a beneficial change.
I have yet to read see or hear of a valid rational reason why DLS won't work.
The same will happen with extended trading hours and Sunday trading no doubt.

However what amazes me is the passion that has embraced this (essentially meaningless) debate when other issues like Okajee barely get a mention. Ah i forgot mass destruction land rape and selling our natural resources overseas are beneficial......

I guess it comes down to selfishness DLS effects our immediate life, Okajee and other major global events don't.
