Nice one, Ian, but I suspect the Tesla car is about US$145k whereas the Alfa is more accessible at around AUD$65K (est.) for the base model with Q4...which I have quoted. I guess it is a great car and there is I assume no denying given the impressions of the girls in the video, but it is not a fair comparison at the pricepoint.

But even Datsun engines are an overly complicated mechanical device. That we've taken so long to get over this piston thing is due to an accident of history. Watt got the steam engine going before Tesla got electric devices sorted. The steam engine easily evolved into internal combustion. Really !!! Sell the engine in any sports car brought to Australia and you can throw in a cheap large 4 or 6 cylinder that fits the bay, and it will pay for the fitting modification and also probably a kit light aircraft that IS ALLOWED to go 250 Kmh (STOL generally is around 180 - 190 Kmh top speed).

Electric is the future no doubt. Just need cars with better range and more recharging stations. Plus the environmental cost of lithium is still unresolved.

It's not just about breaks, it's how long it takes to recharge too. You need to plan around recharging - even with the super charging stations because they take quite a while.

You have to recharge a few times a week instead of a weekly refill.

I'm sure we can come up with other reasons for the slow uptake so far...

Electric Motors have been up to the task for ages. It is battery technology that has been lagging in electric cars getting a foothold. In recent time, there have been some developments in micro-controllers about 20 years ago to enable brushless and sensorless DC motors to be economically run, and that has been a game changer in terms of low cost efficient and compact electric motors.

I doubt that will happen (extra road houses) anytime soon. There would have to be a massive demand for electric top up stations before anyone would consider the outlay to build brand new anythings in the middle of nowhere, let alone ones that need loads of extra electricity. Solar paint was invented 10+ years ago for powering the houses it was painted on (New Inventors tv show on ABC). If that technology could be applied to electric cars you could drive as far as you like.

What you need to do is compare various similar cheap engines (e.g. Mazda, Datsun, Leyland, (e.g. P76) Morris e.t.c.) with the Alpha Romeo engine for:
* "Size (CC and number of Cylinders and their arrangement)" and "horsepower of engine required to drive vehicle overall weight of that Alpha Romeo (at the cheap car power level)" from similar vehicle weight other brand cheap car.
- * NOTE: output rotation direction to drive train
- * Exhaust system outlet sides matching and replace with cheap system and hot dog not muffler
- * Carburetor mounting and air filter passaging and control cabling Fuel system compatibility e.g. "Alpha R. electrics voltage and amperage" matches the cheap vehicle system past the voltage controller (usually everything is 12 volts in domestic vehicles) for electronic inject if used.

So, in Australia whether you sell the transmission and engine when you get a sports car to make a "Trans Aus", you can as much keep the engine and transmission and fuel systems (if you're stinking) in a shed and put it back in when you look for a new car.
(I hear most people on average change their car once every four years in Australia).
