What are people's thoughts on the lightest rig wave rig combos in the size 5.0 to 5.5 out there... eg all Severne, all Neil Pryde, combination of parts from different manufacturers? Any thoughts?

I am wondering if any manufacturers has done any weight tests and is happy to report back.

Without being biased because i have NP as well as stated in the boom post i very much doubt you could find anything lighter than an S1 rigged on a Redline mast with an Enigma boom and a carbon Wave Grenade. I have all of the above except the Redline, i have a Gorilla instead, and they are all VERY light components.

I have;

'13 S1's
Engima boom
Carbon Grenade ext
Gorilla mast

It would easily be one of the lightest production rigs money can buy and realistically >1kg lighter than anything from Pryde, size for size, which in swing weight terms is a lot. There are a few other companies that have started making super light stuff, I think Hot sails have some really light wave sail don't they? But as a whole package the Severne stuff is pretty dialed. I have no affiliation with them but I just like their philosophy and given the price of their gear compared to the 'big names' I can't believe everyone isn't using it.

on the web pages S1 vs Firelight that are only a few gram between the weight with
one batten more...and for the masts an Hot Sails Ultra mast is coming...

yeah firelights are a great light weight sail. until i started using a lighter sail and rig i just didn't realise how much nicer they are to sail, especially in light flukey wind in the waves.

hot sails do have a new mast coming out it's meant to be really light like just over a kilo for 370. obviously the big question then is strength, we'll see. but that with the firelight would be super light.

i purchased a streamline mast extension featherlight, weighs nothing. 390 grams for 30cm one

also the new shorter sails with shorter masts will make rig rig lighter for the same size sail.

Just don't demo a S1, Enigma, Redline combo, it will cost you... Can't believe how much my sailing has improved this season on this combo.

Apparently the Firelight 5.0 (408 luff) rigs quite nicely on a 370, so my dream rig is:

Chinook Pro Carbon 135-185 2.1 kg
Streamlined 30 cm carbon 0.4 kg
HSM 5.0 Firelight 2.8 kg
HSM 370 Ultra 1.1 kg
(don't know Ultra weights, only a guess based on what read elsewhere on forums)

Total weight 6.4 kg

Who wants to sponsor me so that I can find out what the above rig actually weighs?

you will need the 48cm as the extension is at 38cm (has to be a carbon extension at that length) with a 5.0.
but that's how i have it and it's great.

Oops, yeah, I'd need the longer extension.

Ultra light sails is not a market pryde are playing. I think North is having a go with the I.D but they dropped the weight without accumulating the required knowledge to build light sails that hold shape. They are only in their first few generations.

It's not just about dropping the weight, it's dropping the weight while keeping a sail that doesn't sh!t itself.

Shopping around for the lightest rig components would work but if you're committed to spending the money then it makes sense to have everything match.

I'd back in cjws rig against anything that a brand who builds the Superfreak puts on the table.

Does half a kilo, or a kilo really make that much difference?

falling in and getting your boardies and rashie wet will add half a kilo, if you have long hair getting that wet will add half a kilo.

surely just going a slightly bigger board will be a better option than trying to save a few grams on your sail, mast, boom combo.

Or maybe we should all sail nude and shave the hair of our heads and legs etc.

If you are based on the Australian East Coast I would say yes. Here you will often find conditions were the wind is 10 - 15 knts with some sizeable waves. Handling a heavy rig in these conditions isn't much fun and become more of a hindrance once you get on a wave.

I think there might be a case for a 5.5 to 5.0 sail that's specifically build for those conditions. Light wind, big surf...

you are partial correct but mostly wrong. EDIT: its your opinion you can back who you want.

the firelights are amazingly strong from my history with them, especially for there weight. yu can get them with mast luff that hold together keeping the sail in one piece even after swimming for an hour in the whitewash.

lots of guys are on the severn gear and seem to rate it so i believe they are doing something right.

but you can not knock the hotsails gear they have developed sails for all ends of the spectrum from the SFME, super solid soft wave (NO sail will last longer) to the firelight, super light performance.

Lol. The hotsails serious wave and freestyle gear is great. Every brand is making great gear. Just having a laugh at the expense of them cause they have the Superfreak. It's the kind of sail you don't take home to mother.

Although my point that light sails need to hold together has less to do with getting dumped by waves and more to do with stretching and holding their shape after prolonged use. This was a genuine criticism of some of the new entries in the light sail market. I've heard little about the firelight, never sailed it and can't seriously comment.

so anyone have an opinion on any different brands... especially people that aren't team riders?

It depends whether you're counting the new ultra-compacts on the market (i.e. Naish Chopper and Goya Banzai) as with them you would save a heap of weight with the reduced sail area and also from being able to use a shorter mast. Even with normal compact sails that don't give more power then their quote size (e.g NP Fly 5.1 and 5.4), you are still going to save weight by being able to use a shorter mast. (This is a quality both the S1 and FL poses).
As for talk re the quality of different sails, the OPs questions was what was the lightest wave rig combo? Not, what is the best light wind wave combo?

My chinnook 28cm carbon is lighter dunko.. 280g and the aluminum 380g .. though from my limited experience not sure if this is a good thing .. how freakin good was Wanda yest !!!!! ..

Really? that's light! Streamlined claim there's is the lightest? Anyway it's held up even at 38cm extension for about 6 months, that's good for me.

It was ridiculously good best ever! So stoked. Even the surfers were stoked watching the action!
Kites were a joke, a few really need a lesson in etiquette. Blatant drop ins. Most were ok though.

Downs side I watched my much love firelight go over the fall on a huge dry closeout! Watching I new there was no way any sail (except a superfreak) could survive. Still amazed the mast held up.

And this is all before you put a gopro on the top so that you can show off later....

Mines a cup could be why... Unreal day . No gear breaks for me and got smashed at the end , 4 in a row ..

Mark, I think it makes a huge difference especially when poping the board in transitions and moving rail to rail as quickly as possible when wave riding. A lot of the difference in the rig would also be around swing weight, much like on a road bike - the weight in the wheels is a lot more critical on the rim/tyre than at the hub.

If I can get a shorter mast/boom on a light weight sail, I know I will sail better as it will be easier to move/jump...

ok... had a look at the Severne Enigma boom yesterday. It's a nice looking boom that seems remarkably stiff. It feels light, probably not a huge difference compared to other full carbon booms, but light none the less.

The thin boom arms make for an easy grip.

Not entirely sure why people complain about the tail design. It looks very similar to the X9 NP I have at the moment. Perhaps it's different for race sale use but for wave sails I would say it's not exactly rocket science.

The front end seems well thought out while being minimalist and small... although I wouldn't call it revolutionary more evolutionary.

RRP is a little less than NP but I wouldn't call it cheap.

Very interested in adding one to my kit. Now if I could only test one of those booms without having to shell out nearly a grand first.

You must have an older X9 because the tail of the Current X9 wave and the Enigma are nothing alike.
