speaking of location guides. i'm thinking of doing some supsailing at mooloolaba on saturday.

has anyone been there in an easterly? is the wind shadow too big? i've only sailed mools in a NW - NE wind.

Gestalt. Ive sailed my RBs there. Wind shadow will reach out a very long way in Easterly. Even ENE its quite large. Well out past the river mouth rock groyne. Especially in the forecast light winds. Swell should be dropping so hit Maroochy river mouth or off the beach near Mools SLSC.

Saturday's forecast is windless. Take your paddle.

think you r right about the wind shadow. Last easterly I looked at surfcam and the flags were not moving.

Gestalt yep. Ive been a super keen offshore fisho the past 30years from brisbane river to double island point. Wind n tide is my passion dude. Ive got many years worth of diaries n an inimate knowledge of wind n tide conditions for this area. This all relates perfectly to sailboardin. Also part of the reason i can sail 160 times a year. Im in tune with the weather

Massive wind shadow for Mools bay in ESE. Meteye says 15-20 about 1pm. Seabreeze 10-15 Windy says 10-15.Coastal Watch says 10-15. Check CW on the day for accurate actual readings n forecast.. Use CW Bulcock for GB minus 3-5kts. GB would be a better choice for ESE. Especially on high tide. Gemini to Death corner for nice clear aqua blue water. Or Militaty jetty area. About 3.5km run from Bells ck to old lighthouse bank near Bribie is.

Sailed Mooloolaba in a cyclone in 2012 ish - massive swell and howling easterly. It was sick
super offshore but was good with waves peeling from the groyne into the beach

John coda was telling me once of an epic dtl session he had at Mooloolaba.

I think it may have been in a howling southerly? But may have been that easterly. Sounded like a float and ride session

ill do a drive around and see what looks best. had been talking to Jason about a spot prior to the cyclone that you guys are now sailing and i'd like to try but it needs a high tide.

Hey Gestalt, the spot you speak of is usually the learners zone bcoz its shallow n not so tidal. Lungs n Dags n I have taken the kids there for a few learners sessions. Only really comes online for the big kids when a cyclone is on the warpath. Then the tidal surge + hightide makes it worthwhile. 80% of the time it kids only venue.

On big hightide about waist deep at best. About 2hrs worth. Its kinda like a secret fishing spot. All the requirements hafta be met or it just doesnt fire. Its really a kids zone mostly knee deep. Even when OMA was crankin n Shifu sailed with us, i was repeatedly snickin bottom thru the troughs with 34cm fin in 40cm chop in knee deep water!!!. Had a few interesting moments as the wind bumped over 30+kts n the tide dropped late in the day. Put it this way it was that shallow if the board was planing no dramas.But if you had to beach start it or dropped off the plane it was too shallow n had to walk to find deep enough water to stop the 34cm fin dragging. Sketchy but a great rush in 30kts wind. One of the locals tried it the next arvo, on slightly less tide.26cm fin. 2 MONSTER CATAPULTS. Resulted in lots of bark missing from his shins n a crunched board. Definately not an everyday location.

Lookin at forecast, a learners rig will be just fine for ya. Rip it up.
Im workin so i wont be there to see you 'smash it'.

I have sailed at Mooloolaba often in an easterly and southeast.
The main problem is getting back to the beach, sailing upwind in non planning conditions.
On a SUP you should have no problems. I have used my larger slalom / freeride boards that have a deep fin.
Once you get past the river mouth you will pick up the wind.
It is great ocean blasting out the back if that's what you are after.
Obviously there's no nasty shore break to deal with.
I plan on trying it with my foil board.
Give it a go!

Yo Lungs! I can remember you walking back along that bank on one of the kids days. Bcoz there wasnt enough water to float even your lil fairy weight. Now thats bloody shallow. tehehe...

Gesty, those pesky dumpbirds have been stalking the shallows there for years.. WE ARE GONNA TAKE IT BACK!!! GB IS ALL ABOUT SAILBOARDIN...

I remember walking down that path with an out going tide and no wind to rescue 2 kids who ran out of wind and were in a spot of bother and one of them quite upset. Swam out and down too them, at a current assisted speed that would have won me a gold medal, they did come back for more another day.
