After seeing the success of the sandstone seabreesers topic I thought I might start and hopefully contribute to the news and advancement of the sport here.
I realise that there are many of you who have lived, sailed and contributed to the sport here so I thought we could compile our experiences, bps, news and results of our days sailing and hopefully tempt others into the sport.
So I'll begin
Arrrgh me hearties,
Sailed today on a falling tide at 3.30 at Thompsons on an old Thommon and 9.0 NCX and was on the plane 20% of the time.. Anyone else sailed there earlier today?

Nah, sailed there Mon pm & Tues am when there was plenty of water. Wind was a bit light on Wed and had a few things to catch up on. Was a good crew out Mon of about 8 which is a few for a working day, then about 5 or so Tues. Good conditions as well especially Mon.

Good on ya Pete, take some good old Sandstone cheer with you to the deep dark south. If there's one thing we could depend on when you lived here, we always had someone to sail with any time, any day.

Look forward to seeing you on the water Pete. I'm sailing Sunday arvo at Point OHalloran's. Will be there around 1.30pm and sail the incoming tide. The usual Vicky Point suspects will be there I suspect...and a good selection of 'theme' mate because there's a few pirates amongst us! See you on the water. Cheers, Jack

Here's the spots around VP. Disscuss.


1. Thompsons: Works when the wind is in the south to south east. Sandy bottom but a long walk when the tide is out.

2. Pt Halloran: Works from north-west (bit iffy) to north to north-east. Again sandy bottom. A bit rocky on the eastern end, booties reccomended. Really long walk on a low tide.

3. Speed bank: Works best in the south, still good in the south-east. Needs to be a low tide to work, flat water for blasting speed runs.

4. Windy's secret spot: Only works on low tide, good option if you don't feel like lugging your gear miles. You have to walk through mud and sail out by the boats though. Works north to south-east. When the wind is in the north the waves hit the bank like mini surf. Really fun for jumping off. There is also a little bit of flat water behind the bank if thats your thing.
When the wind is in the south there is also flat water behind the point on coochie which is great for planning gybes. Does get a bit shallow though.

Nice day at Pt Halloran - wind came in nicely.

However, was planing along nicely, about 3/4 the way to Coochie and 100m in front of me saw about a 4 foot shark jump out of the water, spinning about 3 foot in the air. Turned around pretty quickly & stuck to sailing well away from sharky for the rest of the day!!! First time I have seen a shark whilst sailing.

Haha, I've never seen any sharks out there before but I'll believe that they are there. Dad reckons he fell on one ages ago near the creak mouth there.

All I saw today was a dugong, don't want to hit them at any speed. I've done that before and lost a fin.

First impressions- had my first sail at Halloran and met a few of the locals, about eight sailors and a few kites.
Wind was about 14-15 with gusts 16-18 tops I'm guessing. A mixed bag of sailors from experts to learners and all ages. Water was very lumpy, more so than I'm used to lately- reminds me of Woorim without the swells or the Bribie channel and the locals making it look easy peasey Everyone is friendly and helpful and the locals made me feel very welcome. I started by rigging the 7.8 blade and a 54 fin on the 70 wide Thommen. Fin too big, managed to hit a sandbank (again) water too lumpy for me to get comfortable on the 7.8 so I changed to a 6.6 and weed fin, much better. I'm going to have to use a board that's happier in the chop. It's a terrific rigging area being part of the park foreshore though no toilet handy. The access to the water is via steps due to the Rockwell on the foreshore and requires two trips, sail first and then the board. Shallow to about 75 to 100 meters sandy bottom. Will have to check it out on low tide to fix the location of hazards the locals described. Some clumpy weed about too.
I must say I'm looking forward to some great sailing days there and making a whole bunch of new friends.
Its great to see learners out there having a go, gives you hope for the future!!

Mal and Duncan and I braved the conditions at Hallorans again today, once we rigged three sails and the wind dropped five knots per sail there wasn't much left to work with. Huge clumps of weed, some 20 feet in diameter didn't help. Only got planing a couple of times on the big Thommen and 9.0.
Mal squeezing what he did out of today's conditions proves how versatile the 7.8 and 133 combo works after handling yesterdays breeze so well.

Nice work gents, I sat it out yesterday but it was longboard conditions only up our way.

Yeah, yesterday wasn't great. I think there was too much clould cover and it didn't get hot enough for the seabreeze to kick in.

Also worth noting that VP usally gets the NE seabreeze later than the northern parts of the bay and sometimes it doesn't even come in at all. Bit of a bummer.

Could hardly lift my arms on Sunday, time to try getting in a harness I guess? Great to meet a few of you, and a MASSIVE thanks for the loan of the mast foot, needed to get me in the water after a broken tendon on mine. I started windsurfing this year, and I am definitely hooked! Really looking forward to many more sessions around VP!!

I saw you sailing without a harness and I thought at the time "man his arms are going to be sore tomorrow".

Definitely! Even got a few blisters on the hands to show it was hard afternoons work hanging of the boom!

Hang in there Daz! Had a good session yesterday, took my new (superseded) 7.3 KA Konsept on the 70 wide Thommen and 32 weed fin off Wilsons about 2:30 and sailed till 4:30 between Coochie and Thompsons.
Got a bit choppy towards the end as the tide started to come in. I think I might have just scraped a dugong as the weed fin hit something soft but not too deeply. Also managed to avoid a bloody big turtle.
Wind was great, I ran out of puff as usual so I knocked off and saw some sailors while I was packing up. Great day!!

Looks like the wind is in again today. Shame about the high tide being so low.

Arrrgh me hearties, big day at Thompsons, three other boards and a lot of kites.
I am still learning how to trim my new 7.3 Konsept so I used my 70 wide Thommen and weed fin again.
Water was flat as the tide came in late afternoon and the wind was anywhere from 12 to 20+
i launched at Thompsons and spent the entire time sailing out the front.
I was using GPSLogit for the feedback via the headphones and had some reasonable results, a 17 alpha, 28
2sec, and 27 5x10 sec if you can believe gpslogit. I don't know where the other sailors launched from or where they went but by the time I had a cider generously provided by Will, a kiter and had a chat with the other kiters the sailors had disappeared. Learning about the local spots is a really great experience and everyone very friendly. Bring it on!!!!!L

We rig up at the far end of Thompsons so you'll have to join us in future otherwise you might get 'turned' and join the dark side! Hi Mal. Thanks for the suggestion mate but I think that title is better suited to Morgs. 'Captain Morgan' has a certain ring to it!

Sounds like you had a cracking afternoon Pete, all those Sandstone sessions in 12 inches of water with your delta fin (when we were too scared to play) are paying off down there.

I didn't sail today, busy with family stuff. Anyone on the water today? Hoping tomorrow's high tide might work if it's windy enough. Is there anywhere that low tide is ok?

It seems Windy Kid has a couple of spots, hope he'll tell us how to get there!

Will be down at VP during the morning - hopefully the wind kicks in early.
