There's no comp for your type of race HC; unless they have freestyle

so say i have a starboard GO 170, with a 40cm fin, whats size cheap rig should i get to race the freeride dudes?

i wouldn't put enough effort into tuning my gear to make it worthwhile racing the slalom dudes as i don't sail slalom gear every day, so i'd be happy being mediocre at the back of the freeride fleet.... lol

p.s. anyone sail today? looked like there was a little bit of a breeze?

What size rig would you generally use on a race board. I know it's subject to sailors weight. Would you use the same size as on a slalom board or tend to rig a bit bigger?

Hi Brad sail size is similar but usually sails would have a tighter leech to drive up wind in lighter winds international raceboard is 9.5 for men 8.5 for women but some somewhere from 7.5 up would be good

The second problem, is that when the wind is blowing - people want to do something faster and more exciting. I'm not stating that course racing is not exciting, I for one believe that it is most likely very intense in its own way. But i personally know a number of guys, that if it blowing 20 kts, will go bump and jump or wave sailing, or prefer to race slalom.

Totally! That's what killed longboard racing. Shortboards. If its windy you have to be able to go back to fast slalom. Most clubs seem to allow for this though.

Thanks Richie and Scott I thought I might buy one if it was wearable in those types of races

i like the idea of the light wind longboard racing at paradise point. i just haven't had much time on the weekend lately, or a big board. would be great if there was something to use already at the yacht club and all i needed to bring was a rig etc

I saw some sort of Bic there. Handyman might know more about it though. or Ebay or your freestyle board (you can plane on it in 3 knots anyway)

Which is how I can tell there is no wind.
This thread would not have got to 3 pages if there was 20kts blowing.
Everyone is bored.

Would love to add a few paragraphs to this thread, but there is no
wind (again).
But hey we are sorted because we have just purchased a 12'6'' Starboard Sup,
and although the wind is light will still be able sail this arvo.
Tried to buy an old raceboard but they are pretty rare.
Only used the Sup a couple of times but well impressed, gets me on
the water in very light winds.
Will try and get to Lake Cootharaba as very interested in racing.

Sailed my first course today in 20 years at Paradise Point Sailing club, Handyman was kind enough to let me borrow his f2 lightning, guys at the club very friendly I would recommend anyone interested in course racing giving it a go down there. Was quite challenging sailing the course, long downwind & upwind legs, I havent sailed like that for ages. I enjoy blasting across the water on reach,s as much as the next guy but it was good to sail those different points of sail. Think I,ll do some more.

I've just picked up the thread. I bought a Mistral Superlight and a couple of sails this time last year. I sailed this summer intermitently on the Bay, but I find the rocky bayside at low tide, lousy parking and general lack of good access to the bay a pain. I've subsequently had a pretty lean summer with other commitments but would like to give Paradise Point a go. When is the next racing at Paradise Point? I'll see if I can make it.

All the course racers should check out icarbons post re the RQ racing scene, there are some good pointers there for anyone wanting to get involved with an established race program at RQ. It may not suit everyone but I am sure it will be good to learn what is going on there, it looks like it is open to all course racing sailors with any kit.

Yes it is a mistral sst competition, good bottom end nice to windwards but not very quick on a reach in a blow . Great value and build quality
