Jimbob is certainly the man with the deep knowladge of this place.

I have been measuring the level each day.

It dropped 15cm on Monday with the wind at the Food Level sign to 90cm from the top of the sign. Tuesday midday it was back up 6cm to 84cm..

I didn't measure after the session but it did receed more during the afternoon. I will have a look today now there is very little wind and see what it has settled back to.

Each day I drove out via Packem Point and there has been a noticable drop since I got here last week.

I will start writing down the numbers (so I dont forget ) and reporting them here.

Thank you Morts for your words of wisdom but there's no room with Stretchy. Or anyone for that matter.

Thanks Boombuster. My previous measurements were from the top of the board. So I am guessing that measurements equates to approximately 73cm from the top.

if that is correct, the lake has risen about 10cm since the wind dropped. The water recedes in the middle lake when the wind blows from the SE as the water is pushed out into the Big Lake. When the wind drops, the water comes back and the lake rises a bit again. I would expect it to rise a bit more if the wind blows westerly.

The weed beds in Kevs bay were under water yesterday.. I'm guessing 28-30cms under? Buggerall wind though.. 5-14kts - few patches of 14kts..SSW
I had a 24cm FF on and there was plenty of water under it.
Last SSE the weed was on top , it was dead flat and unless you were well powered it was getting a bit boggy with an 18cm FF .

The depth of the weed below the surface cant be generalised. It varies significantly over the Middle Lake.

It was on the surface in a few places at between Kev;s Bay and the islands, and in a small patch just off the 5 Mile during the South Easterlies earlier this week.

The water level seems to have risen about 10-15cm since then so it might be that far under, but the weed may foat up a bit too so it could be a bit less in places. The winds are very light this morning and from the West. They are forecast to stay in the west for quite a few days, although it could be quite strong for a couple of them I will take an accurate water level in an hour or so and report.

For West Australians "Is it worth Sandgropers doing the trip to LG atm?"

Water State: Right at this moment = Hmm....... Difficult, The water is nowhere flat as last year, While the spit is Flat, it's short and the wind angle can be a bit square for super speeds depending on angle of the wind, its the acres of dead flat water that are worth doing the 6,000km round trip for, and they dont exist at this moment so therefore for flat water your better off at Lilacs, Fangies, Liptons or Point Grey. Rating 3 star ***

Winds: when the SE'ter is blowing its probably still a superior wind to anything we get in WA, colder denser stronger and more consistent. Just dont seem to be getting a lot of them Rating 4 star ****

Socially: Fabulous, getting to meet GPSTCers from all over Australia, and new friends to be made Rating 5 star *****

Upon reflection of my fabulous sail at the spit on Tuesday, the wind was 25 to 30kts, and in similar winds last year on the acres of dead flat water I was doing 41's and 40's every run, pick the gust and pick your angle, the sail lightens up and you get sucked/pushed to warp speed, at the spit on tues the wind was a bit square, so the feeling was massive power in the sail feeling over powered and never lightening up or getting that phenomenal push/suck deep into the wind, was super exhilirating being on the edge, and I have never sailed that fast squarish to the wind, but the negative I was stuck in the 37/38/39kt range.

EDIT: What would I do if I'd planned a trip to LG, and the 10 day forecast doesnt look good, I'd look at the WA forecasts, and my first choice if the forecast was good in Albany, would be to Cancel the LG trip and go to Lilacs.

PS: Disclaimer = These are just my personal opinions, I am not sponsored by WA Tourism, sometimes there are other reasons to travel that are more important than cracking 40kts, SUCH AS = the experience, the adventure, seeing and experiencing new places, meeting new people, seeing old frinds, seeing family, and the list goes on................ However, if you think your coming to LG to crack your first 40kts, or sail in perfect conditions, hmmm think again

Great fins , did 39+kts mildly choppy conditions (5/2 @ LG) on a 19. Just need more wind.

It's unfortunate that Lake George isn't firing this year.. So far

But..

It could make the GPSTC more interesting/exciting this year, when the best sailors in AUS achieve in less ideal conditions.

To ask a silly question, would a crowd funded wind speed meter and web cam be out of the question ?. There would be technical, security, maintenance and council approval issues to hash out first of course. Could even gain support of other hobby groups ?

Perhaps not out of the question. There are two weather stations on the lake (One on the Middle Lake and one in the Big Lake) that are now not working and the people on charge (SA Water) say they have no budget to fix them.

There used to be water level, anemometer, turbidity and salinity sensors.

I asked him if we could help crowd fund the repairs, at least to the level and wind sensors, but I never got an answer.

It would not be technically difficult to put a commercial weather station on the existing structure, and possibly a camera, although i dont know how much use the camera would be.

I can make some more enquiries about hwat might be possible with the existing weather station if we can crow fund something.

Daffy, has there ever been a windsurfing comp on LG? Seems like a great location because of the obvious but also the lack of boats and being closed in waters.

Oh no, not a Top Ten Day right there. That looks seriously bad! What happened? Did the axle mounts give up or what ?? (And just to add insult to injury, Lock up your pool toys and pink flamingo garden ornaments as the MandurahMob Brokeback LG team left town this morning and are on their way...)

There are some trophies in the Pub with the results of two comps from the 90's. A marathon and a radar speed comp.
There seems to be some interest in reinacting the marathon (Packem Point to the "Resort" and back?) on a suitable windy day just for fun.

There was also a GPS competition for a few years around 2013 run by the SA sailors and based on GPSTC catagories.

And there is a similar KA-72 one this year and last.

The numbers are already there in GPSTC for anyone to see.

Some sort of slalom or course racing would be fun, but that takes a whole lot of organisation and people. Who wants to do that?

This place is so much fun without any big organised event anyhow. I think it may be better the way it is.

Lake Level was -84cm yesterday around mid-day.

Looks like a Sou'Westerly moves the water out too. The weed beds at the Spit end of the lake are pretty good at this level.

There's been great wave sailing at port fairy the last two days, yesterday was awesome, cross shore, 25-30knts in the morning followed by 20-25knt the rest of the day. Good swell head to logo, pure down the line bliss, totally stuffed. Tue/Wed/Thu looking good - Tue maybe a bit over the top at 30-40knt and a 4-5m swell.

How's the fin sanding going?

Should one day aim for Australian slalom titles and Foils lol

Apart from weed, water levels the most noticeable thing I found has been the lack of FLOAT, there's more fresh water than any other year I can remember, doesn't taste too bad.
