Hey guys and happy New Year.
What do the Min Speed and Spd Genie settings do? Thanks!!!
Min Speed sets the minimum speed that data will be recorded.
I usually set 0, or 1 or 2 knots if it looks like being a big day with lots of stops for a rest. On 0 it will record all the time, even when you are stationary.
On 1 or more knots, it will not record at any speeds less than that setting.
Spd Genie is the speed setting that the "Genie" resets below.
ie. When you do a run, it records and calculates the best 10 second speed (if that is what you have set in SPEED AVE). When you drop below the SPD GENIE speed it will save and display the last run and if you have it set up properly it will scroll trough that alternating with you best 10 sec run and the distance traveled in that session so far until you go above the set speed and then it will revert to the actual speed again.
It is worth pointing out that the 'Top 10 Speeds' button will download the saved Genie speeds in a small .txt text file. If you have a calculator brain, or an electronic one handy, you can quickly work out you 5 x 10 average from this. Just remember there are not filters on this operation so it may not always agree with the software calculations. The file contains your top dozen or so MAX speeds, and your top dozen or so 10 second speeds (or whatever you have set in the SPEED AVE setting).
You should CLEAR this before the next session or your 'Genie' will still display speeds from the last session.
Here are the settings I usually use:
Notes. If it is a really good speed session I will set the Genie speed a few knots higher to prevent it resetting on the upwind.
If I was after a particular category e.g. Nautical mile, I might set the Genie to 60 seconds. That would not quite be a NM but at least I would have some idea. Of course, If I am also carrying my cheap android phone with GPS-Logit installed, as is now my habit, it find it easier just to refer to it on the water, although I have found I can't always trust what it displays.
