Cold hard cash is always great:
$60 aus only one carton of beer
$20 aus what most tradies spend on lunch a day
$150 what we spend on fuel to sail in two weeks

so let us Put our short arms in pockets and give

I agree with the keeping the membership free idea, inclusive rather than ex.
Teeshirts are a good idea again (as suggested in another colour please)
I like the idea of long sleeve rashies but cannot imagine ever being out of a wetsuit again ( short memory)

How about the small annual fee is what your top recorded speed the previous year was - a bit like a "speeding fine"

Great ideas!!!!!!!

My only probably with an annual fee/s is that immediately people will drop out!!

One of the philosophies of the GTC is INCLISIVENESS and fees will lead to exclusuion.

Maybe we could have something like a month where You volunitarily donate 50% (or another percentage) of your maximum speed for the month, goes into a draw and there is a prize available that will be drawn at random?

Did the T-shirts cover costs last year??

If so, it was a pretty simple solution .... everyone always needs another t-shirt.
Maybe have a date on their, similar to the Lancelin Ocean Classic
i.e. 2009 GPS Team Challenge blah blah
or 3rd annual GPS Team Challenge blah blah.
that way there is a market for them each year.

I take the point about inclusiveness and agree that an annual fee would be counterproductive, not to mention a logistical hassle.

I am happy to buy t-shirts or stickers.

I also agree with the idea of a banner promoting last months winners instead of a monthly cup. I like the idea of seasonal cups, but perhaps they could be perpetual also, to be returned and engraved with next years winners name?

Other ideas: is more sponsorship realistic? Or perhaps a raffle?

How about:

"If you feel like making a small donation to help us fund the website, send cash here..."

Hi guys, thanks for the ideas.

Our annual budget is around $800.

Last year the T-shirts paid for 2007 (repaying Hardie for supporting the site in the first year) and 2008, so I think it's quite possible to support the site through sales alone. It shouldn't be necessary to require any form of membership fee, and I'm against charging any money unless the sailor gets something tangible in return.
Besides, who doesn't want a unique T-shirt or sticker that says "I'm part of an elite crew"?

I'm quite humbled by the responses we've gotten here, you guys are awesome

Oddly enough have some time tomorrow and considered it but the wind duration is forecast to be too brief for me this time. Will do so soon!
Sorry to hear about the flu.
Am currenlty wondering how daft I would be to launch early tomorrow when the overnight forecast temp is 5 degrees.

All wonderful ideas (except Gestalt's one... you'll keep!)

Keep them coming, please!

Bear in mind that I feel strongly that the challenge should remain free to join and compete in. This encourages people who don't post very often to still be a part of it, whenever they can.

it got lots of green thumbs, seems there is a market for a kiss mate.
