For 2017 only Avanti and Vandal make wave sails for hard top masts. For older sails the Unifiber mast selector tool is useful:

I'm at work now, so later I will take a peak in the mast for the number. Should I keep the mast, or return it for a CC? Would I even notice a difference between a CC versus a hardtop?

These look like great guides to get the right mast. Just another hint is to get the correct length mast for the sail you have.

No, this is another example of our humour, I'm afraid you're going to have to wear this one for a while.

I was almost thinking that was a joke. Maybe I should take a trip to Australia to see what the mentality and culture is really like up front in person. Maybe then I will have a better understanding of all these jokes. Sounds like lingo, slang and jokes are quite different here in the USA than in Australia.

Before I look at the inside of my mast for a serial #, is this a joke as well?

Magic ride, it's the nature of forums that the delivery of the witty comment gets lost. Most will have some kind of smiley face to try indicate that they might just be giving you a ribbing.

Unless you have deep pockets and buy brand new matching brand gear, picking a mast that might work can be hit and miss. Charts like the unifiber ones help make better guesses. As you have discovered, 400 + 30 doesn't equal 430 because shorter masts tend to be softer, made worse by it being a hard top. If I were you I would return the mast on account of it being hard top when the shop said Cc. You'll find closer match on most sails with CC.

As as for the serial (not cereal ) number, some brands might put it inside the base I suppose but unless you have somewhere to look it up I'm not sure how it helps?

Sometimes you can get away with the wrong size mast, some sail brands are more forgiving than others.

P.S. Pay a visit to the kite forum, that angry mob turn on each other at the drop of a hat. This is one of the more civil forums you'll find on the interwebs.

if everyone's ditching their hard top version (or hiding) one question I have is what's wrong with hard top masts...surely like everything else in life certain type of mast should suit certain functions better....apart from majority being CC

Now that's the best idea you've had for a while, come to WA sometime between Nov and February, I'm sure you'll find a lot of new friends, not to mention some great windsurfing.

Hey Magic Ride, I would suggest emailing the mast manufacturer with details/specs/pictures of the mast and asking them what the bend curve rating would be. Then look for sail brands that work well within that bend curve rating.

I'll have a guess at this one, as it's a question that's intrigued me for a while.

Allowing 2 different sails, with the same shape rigged but suited to one or the other mast type, with the same stiffness . The one with the stiff top is going to have more tension in the head of the sail and less in the body, so the mast is going to flex from lower down.
Here is where I get lost, I'd think that would make the sail less stable than the opposite condition, where the head is flexing more but the body isn't.

Maybe you were taking people on this forum for a (Magic) Ride and some might have thought you were the one having a joke at their expense? Maybe the person who sold you the mast was taking you for a (Magic) Ride when he sold you a modern mast to suit an ancient sail?

All speculation really, but we're you actually trying to fool anyone?

So I have another thought here. I may just return this mast and get either a 400 Ezzy Hookipa RDM or a 400 NoLimitz Sumo RDM for a 5.3 wave sail. Which mast do you guys prefer? I am 175 pounds, 5'11" tall if that matters. I will be using that set up for wave riding and jumping.

Nolimitz is cc and sumo model is 1 point stiffer than the normal nolimitz. From memory Ezzy is more flex top than Nolimitz.
