If my recollection about the Windsurfing NSW film night (organised by a Windsurfer OD fanatic and committee member) contributing to your son's campaign expenses was wrong, then I apologise unreservedly and withdraw it completely. I stand by my recollections of our meeting and would say that your repeated insults here indicate your attitude towards older gear.

I have no idea what you think "Wally Inc" is, but I don't think you can ever find the Windsurfer Class saying that Hoyle invented windsurfing. That claim has been made by Starboard, whose Australian branch sponsored your son - so why you are so angry with Windsurfer sailors for something your son's sponsor's company did?

As for the rest of it, don't complain about being "demonised" because you choose to insult people just because they sail something different from what you sail. Just sail what you like and stop insulting others, please, so we can stop this sort of infighting.

I will now walk away from this forum for a while. Your continued abuse of what others choose to sail has made it an unpleasant place to be.

Just had a Weekend Comp and gathering at our home spot with 30/40 other sailors. It was a change from the week before's event at Jervis Bay with 8 sailors.
The sport is still in decline and without direction from our TWO governing bodies, AWA and YA.
Despite this we put through 10/20 kids and a few adults in a 2 hr Come n Try session. Ran a bit of fun racing on the Saturday with wave\freestyle against slalom boards. Great fun , but there was no great appetite for serious racing . Bit crowded on the water with all the sails .

I don't get what you mean by a divided sport and I don't know what you expect from either the AWA or YA.

Just this weekend a come and try windsurfing day was organised at a Maroochydore sailing club, it was organised by Australian Sailing using 12 techno's and a trailer that was purchased via a Qld government grant awarded to Windsurfing Qld. The gear is part of a joint program with Windsurfing Qld, Australian Sailing and supported by the Qld Government. The Instructor running the day is the vice president of WQ and an Australian Sailing Windsurfing Instructor. The car used to tow the trailer was provided fuelled up by Australian Sailing and the Instructor was paid to run the session. That seems like pretty good collaboration between AS and WQ to me.

ps. 30 to 40 at an event is a pretty awesome turnout, well done.

Windsurfing is not in decline, the Windsurfer LT is growing in stature and numbers rapidly, fleets racing in most states weekly and achieving World Sailing international class status. Make the right board and they will come.

I have a 6yo and a 3yo who will add to the numbers as soon as possible.

Which makes me wonder, when is a good time to start? I was thinking some sailing first to learn how to read wind and water, then onto a board.

I have coached a lot of kids and the ones that know how to sail already pick windsurfing up so much easier

I sailed yesterday in pretty light conditions of 12-15 knots on the river.

Only around three or four sailors out at Melville which included a six year old.

Around half a dozen out at Pelican Point including Isaac on his 9m Warp. Around the same number of foilers.

Half a dozen kite foilers. I watched four of them with huge sails go up and downwind at ridiculous angles that surely no other sailing craft could even get close!

Wide boards of 85cm with a 50 fin make light conditions that much more enjoyable than in the older days - yet few really having taken up the option.

Compared to twenty years back it does seem there are a few less sailors on the river.

Well, I'm about to return back to sport. So its +1.

I was out on an 8.6 and Windtech Magic Bullet 74cm - it was great fun and i was on the plane 80% of the time from 4 till around 5.

Isaac was flying on his combo - i really like the functionality of the Big gear and 80cm plus wide boards / 50 cm fins - in light air - and isaac was doing real nice full planing gybes. Smoking upwind and down.
A few foilers out too - great low end but they are pretty slow in the top end once a traditional board gets half powered - its all good though! It was a magic afternoon on the water and i was wondering - where is everyone?

How is that possible, there is less than fifty AWA members in the whole of Victoria.

Might even be less this year which is a bit sad. Once you take out the life members it's less. Hopefully there will be a change over summer

Yes that is an awesome number to get at a windsurfing regatta, well done to all involved in achieving such great a result. I hope it continues to go from strength to strength.

great initiative with the junior sponsorship, keep working on getting new kids into the sport because they end up increasing participation in every class and discipline.

I can't help but think the road to growth for this sport is through organsied competition.

I tried to help the widsufering market stay alive , I recently bought 300 LT boards for a bon fire to sacrifice to the wind gods , it worked 6 days in a row of wind Who says money cant buy happiness,

Kiting with windsurfers is great. There is always someone to have a drag race with, even if they do run you over every now and then. I find too many kiters are pussies and afraid to engage warp speed.
