I understand where you are coming from Dunko. There is always a plethora of views in the ether but I consider jumping in and having a conversation is how we learn new perspectives. Clicking likes or pumping thumbs does no more than turn dialogue into a popularity contest. And maybe generate some easy coin for Laurie due to clicks Vs advertising...

If you really want red thumbs ..... just reverse your colours. You can do it on wind, so why not?

If you fish or surf, then light wind is a good thing, so .. red=strong wind.

Really weird to be talking so heavily about thumbs. If you were around in the 1970's then you would know that two fingers were used to show that someone disagreed with you.

Never realized we had green and red thumbs, can't see why they are needed

The thumbs were added to provide feedback to posters when people couldn't be bothered typing. Much like you'd grimace, smile etc. We don't always need to talk to get our point across.

Due to the inventive nature of humans, it soon became a tool. Haters of a particular poster would then go on a binge of red-thumbing every post by a particular person. Childish yes, but .. it's what happened. And happened a lot.

So then we introduced ratios to combat this. We introduced limits. So then people go create extra logins to continue their red thumb fest. And before you know it, thumbing became a moderation task, and we're like .. "How did we get here?"

So.. we decided to remove red thumbs, and the results have been good.

However: this are still issues with particular members, and so today, we introduce the new "Hide Member" feature.

If someone really bothers you, you can hide their posts, and you'll not see their posts again. Only posts by the user. If somebody quotes them, that post will still appear in your feed. To hide a member, view their profile and select "Hide". Easy.

It is saddening that we've had to add the feature, but .. such is the nature of things.

You even had limits on the number of green thumbs, but I expect many people never realised it

I see that on the bottom of the page it says

It looks like a good idea. If they bug you, you can just hide their comments and eventually they will be in a room all by themselves. But for newer people, they might be "scared off" by some of the comments by such users.

Bring back the red thumbs, there's already too much control in WA. I reckon when red thumbs went not long after the forum posts decreased.
So a few people get upset getting a red thumb, they can reflect on why they got it and then harden up.

Yes, I never understood why anonymity became the default setting on most "social media" platforms. It is not a big problem on small platforms like this forum, but it is a contributing factor to uncivilized behavior, or worse, on large ones.

Go to your own Profile page, there is a new tab called "Hidden", which lists all those you have chosen to hide.

I can't tell you the definitive answer for this forum (but I will give an answer anyway), but it won't be reciprocal. You will only not see posts from people you have selected and have no control over whether they see yours or not.

It doesn't matter anyway does it? If you are filtering them you won't see their response to you. So what if they try and bait you and other people see it?

This thing could work out well. People being filtered, people filtering, and a few ghost conversations which half the people can't read. What could go wrong

What about a site sponsor ignoring Mark-Aust as he just has a go at them personally all the time..... then they don't see he is later talking about how they're making dangerous products with child labour and using illegal cancerous materials...? They wanna know that cos its not just childish crap now...

So I think if its bad enough to click 'hide' it should be reciprocal.... and I'd be interested to know if that's the case from the mods..?

I don't really see how it could be made reciprocal, as it it possible to view all seabreeze pages without being logged in as a member.

I think the effectiveness of hiding members is limited, but it may deter trolls as they will not know who is blocking them.

It says "you will now see posts from XYZ.........." Instead of "you will not...... "

I agree with Mark, you could miss something if you hide posts, it's not like hiding some persons stuff on facebook as on forum they can be responding to your post. Plenty of business owners/reps post on here.

Hate to say it but this just falls on mods, if enough people report irrelevant etc content then the person should receive notice, reduced posting, suspension & ultimately a ban. & it should raise some mod attention with the volume of posts by individuals.

& it's kinda important, In last 15 years every forum these pests have been on have died, yes there has been decline of forums in general but for sure they have contributed to members walking away. Seabreeze is one of the last english speaking windsurfing forums left.
