Ever since the red thumb button was taken away from us here on sea breeze, people like me have lost everything. We can no longer express our feelings and no one else can express there true feelings towards me..

Maybe you're taking the p!ss, but i agree. It could well have stopped the pettiness that has caused the moderators so much grief just of late. people getting a reality check from a jury of their peers before they message laurie with a sob story could well have made them think twice about bothering.

they might get (and see) two green thumbs, but theres 10 others who don't agree with them. They don't get that un-opinionated clip over the ear. and when they get someone who can be bothered to speak up, it just spirals into a spiteful argument and ends in tears.

of course there will always be trolls who don't really give a crap about their red thumbs, but for the larger part..

No offence but i disagree. i'd rather get 5 red thumbs than a half page opinion piece on why im wrong. Red thumbs are not a personal attack.

Sounds like a further extension of social media censorship. People should have the freedom to express an opinion in the same way people have the freedom to ignore you if you are rude. Personally, I find it more of an offence when the odd person here uses crude language, but I am not their school teacher or mother to lecture them or take away their toys. Perhaps we need an emoji that looks like a bar a soap. By ticking it we suggest that the language needs some cleaning up.

The amount of social media censorship is wrong because the person censoring assumes that they have a superior moral character. I know that trolls are bad but so are telemarketers and weeds in my garden. How many people criticise the weather bureau, without cause when they are frustrated that there is no wind? Is that comment much the same as a red emoji? If you want to see some really bad language and behaviour then watch some sessions of parliament question time when they go at each other maliciously and with intent. Unfortunately, you can't legislate morality, anyway, it just creates a new class of hypocrites.

And add more dimensions to the anonymised evaluation scales. Things like authority of poster, so when it comes to discussions about board repairs, I'd get 0, MarkOz would get 9. Truthfulness, Humour etc should get rated

In the German Surf-Forum there is a response system (up and down thump) and a score system (reaction points are counted) and a listings about your seniority in the forum.

This is not prohibiting a Dunning-Kruger-victim like LeeD to post hot air in multiple threads parallel, but every new or unexperienced user knows after one view on his points, what's going on.

But even more helpful is the "ignore function." You can list a poster to "ignore" him and then the system doesn't show his posts anymore for you. Very helpful if you want to read only the discussion about e.g. foiling and not the posts about bragging him about the great summer 1982 on hookipa, for example :-)

When I saw the title of this post, I thought really? Some spend way too much time on this site to bicker about this! Let's get to the important stuff, our passion for windsurfing!

I think that people may find this forum helps them to feel connected with people, especially during covid, social isolation is certainly not healthy for most people.

Defamation cases are costly to prosecute so it is rare for ordinary people to pursue justice through the courts. A lot of people threaten to sue but the lawyers fees are way too expensive to go much further. That is why we see actors, rich people and celebrities in courts pursuing damages. They are the only ones who can afford it. As such, I wonder what the risk is for a bunch of salt seasoned windsurfers getting overly precious about a comment they don't like. I don't know of anyone in the community who would act in such a way.

Too many "no win, no fee" lawyers out there and there is now a previous judgement against an administrator.
I'm sure Laurie doesn't want to take the risk.

You can open and expand and read if you want to.

Example here .. you can see the 'compressed / hidden ' replies and expand to read if you feel the need ... scroll through the comments here ... and you can see a few greyed out headings with a button to 'show'.

It also encourages users to post valuable replies as they know that pointless points will be flagged and compressed / hidden.

or as someone else suggested when this topic came up a while ago, if reds are brought back, hows about allowing everyone see who thumbed up/down? At least the lack of anonymity might prevent issues.
