Day 1 of the Tiberias PWA World Cup in Slalom just ended with Nicolas Goyard pushing the foil as his weapon of choice in 20/25+ knot conditions.

He claimed the first elimination in spectacular fashion. Are fins really getting pushed to the 30+ knot mark in slalom and what do you guys think about this fin/foil format ?

Saw the video on IG of him overtaking the leaders with a fast jibe. Looks like the foil just carries so much speed through the turns in comparison to fins.

Foils win in the corners, Gorge cup has been proving that since around 2018.

I think he was on the 350cm2 front wing. Really impressive and the jibes were flawless.

He is in a league of his own. His straight line speed is on par if not better. The gusts were up to 28 knots!

That is very far from 25 knots wind speed but the foil advantage is obvious. In the jibes is not a surprise at all, in the straights it is! Goyard barely looses anything in the first straight and can be first at the first mark. AA need to bear off to make the mark, and the others come in tight. after that there is no story, all the fins come to a stop compared to the foil at the first and the game is over .

Just look at the water conditions, gusts measured somewhere else mean little. But that is a side point, the foil has clearly an edge. Conditions might have helped a bit, for some reason everybody gets very spread out, but it was clearly not a 12 knots breeze. They are good solid slalom conditions. We might have just witnessed the beginning of the end of an era!

I am speculating on the wing. He mentioned this morning in the interview with Ben Profit about 3 and the audio went muzzle. The whole race video/audio quality was terrible. I am just speculating on the only wing with 3.

Correction. Phantom just confirmed the setup.

Oleg Marofejev IRIS R foil with 430 front wing, 100 EVO fuselage, 200 rear. R91 board and Rf 6.0 sail.

I just heard the 3 in the interview, but I guess that was the 3 in the 430 and not 350.

To be fair shots from a drone are highly deceiving and make it look a lot lighter than it is. Look at the still photo on the front page of the PWA website from the final race, easily 20kts+.

18-35 knot board speed?
Seems a 10-15 knot range is all you get in comfort, and skill adds a bit more.
No time soon am I using my hi aspect 310 stab as a front foil. Maybe 40 years ago, with helmet and flak vest.....
Mast length must be really short, and narrow chord.

Excuse my ignorance: was Nicolas Goyard a strong pwa competitor on the fin who has transitioned to the foil or is he some kind of foil specialist?

he was already a very good pwa sailor (junior ifca world champion two years in a row), but switched very early to only foiling and is now clearly THE best in the discipline

The Iris R, which is likely the model or close to the model he is on, is 100cm mast, 110 or 100 fuse, and apparently 430 front with 250 or 200 rear.

Can you drag a 100 cm mast, half in the water, fast enough to offset foil lift?
1st reach, he smacks a wave, almost breached, slows way down, recovers. Doesn't seem to be 100 cm high.
I've mentioned several times a bud of mine foils with a 450 foil. He's 160 lbs and decently fast on foil, but only rec fsw speed.

Had the rest of the fleet chosen the foil option would Goyards winning margin have been even greater?
A bit of damage limitation going on amongst the rest?

From what I saw the video coverage was with the second place fin -- it was almost like the first place foil didn't count.

In a slalom race, most times the 1st to 1st mark is the eventual winner, barring a catastrophic crash. Clean air and clean water.
