What is the problem with having the comp up north? Small minds I think.... Same as having it in Bali...

I think the problem was the crew up north didn't want the comp so they got organised and stopped it.

Pull your head out of your ass barbs. If ripcurl held their comp up north, up north would become the new scabs.

I think you are dreaming there jacky, for a start how far north is it? Its not like you can just drive to car park like you can @ scabs. Plus the x-hour drive/fly makes it a bit hard to do after work. See what Im getting @ you small minded fool......i do take pitty on you, clown

Gnaraloo survived the Billabong Challenge. I'm sure it can withstand a Rip Curl comp. Not like it's a secret or anything.

I mean, it's in the middle of the freaking desert.

Would'nt you be spewin if you took 2 weeks annual leave from work and drove the 10 hours to get there only to find the place packed to the rafters with pro's. It's not like Bali where there are dozens of other waves that you can go and surf elsewhere. Remember that The Bluff and Turtles are the only 2 other waves in the area that have to accomodate everybody else while Gnarloo is dominated by a lucky few. I hardly think Gnarloo/The Bluff needs any more exposure than it already has had over the last 20 years. It's nice to know that there is still a place that is nearly untouched by todays commercialism and tourism, and that the average Joe Blow can go there and experience something close to the old days surfing frontier. I'll bet money if you lived in a 1 wave town you would'nt want your wave taken over by the Pro's for 2 weeks during the peak season. Yeh, The Search concept is great but surely there are waves out there waiting to be discovered and surfed in some far off place that would keep in touch with the concept they are selling. Don't get me wrong i like to watch the pro's carvin it up also, but Gnarloo's had it's go, and it's time to find somewhere else.

I think the only peole that benefit from pro surfing are they few at the top and the bosses of surf companies who do their best to suck as much money from us and attempt to distort our view of surfing for thier our benifit. Surf comp or no surf comp I believe no one has the right to tell us where we can or can't surf.

I think some people might be missing the point, its not just 2 weeks, its the aftermath of the whole thing. Its a very fragile area with very limited resources which is already close to capacity with the number of people going there now. This area just doesnt need any more exposure, and at the end of the day all Rip Curl cares about is the corporate dollar, they couldnt give a rats arse about what damage they leave behind so long as they get maximum exposure for their brand. The reason it didnt go ahead this year was because they couldnt satisfy the station owners request for a satisfactory enviromental impact study, -cos Rip Curl didnt have one, they dont care. The Billabong Challenge was very different to a WCT event, the Challenge was 3 heats in total with 4 surfers in each and free surfers weren't prevented from entering the water during the contest, a WCT event has the top 44 and who knows how many support staff (100+?) the exposure is huge, it will attract hordes more people. Yes its true, this place is no secret, but that doesn't mean it should be exploited by huge multi national companies in the quest for profits. And Barbs I'm guessing you dont know where this spot is since you asked "how far north is it", maybe you should do a bit of research and go have a look for yourself, thats what the real "search" is all about.

I wasnt asking "how far north" I was saying that its not a place that u can go after work for the arvo after work. Saying that Ripcurl dont care about the evironment ect is crap. they wouldnt be able to hold events anywhere if they didnt.
As usual small minds prevail.
By the way I know where it is, do you Goofy? U goof..............

Yes, I've been there many many times I love it, I just dont want to see it destroyed by "progress". I think you probably took my comment the wrong way, I wasnt having ago at you, I just think if you've ever put the effort in to getting to places like this you might change your mind at the idea of the pro tour turning up.

Mate Ive surfed many spots that have had major comps eg Injinup had Tajs small fries there, no probs from what I can see. I have also surfed spots like Black Point & if its anything like the NW its hard enough to get there nevermind have a comp. What we need to do rather than squark about these comps ect we need to stop coastal development eg Smiths, Injinup & Two rocks ect as this is killing our coastline a hell of alot quicker than a two week F#$Kin comp.....Imagine Gnarloo Resort-----then see what happens.......

the reason they didnt run the comp up there was because there isnt the infrastructure to support a competition. infrastructure means development and things like resorts/airports etc. A wct search event like that is just the excuse the greedy developers are looking for. we all know they have wanted to put marinas etc up at ningaloo for years, so before you say lets have a competition at gnarloo but not have resorts up there consider whether you can have one without the other.will hordes of brazilians and americans will follow in the footsteps of ripcurl to surf the place they watched on the internet webcast, like they did to la jolla. reportedly la jolla is a circus now whenever its working which isnt that often. just because the didnt run the comp this year doesnt mean they wont try again.

I do see what you are saying Stu, and agree in part, Fiji has little or no infastructure as well but they insist on going there every year and there is no spectators at all at this event so why do they even have it there cant be good for the sponsers ect????...brazos & yanks will come anyway, all Im saying is "why not have a comp" , at the end of the day its going to piss someone off no matter where you put it............there is alway pissed locals no matter where you go....

Yes I agree CrefloDollar, Unless you have been there and experienced the place first hand you can't appreciate whats at risk, more than just a surf spot with a car park.

Whats the point of a surf comp anyway no mater where you hold it. Who needs three independant so called judges on the beach saying who they think the best surfer is. Scrap the whole thing.

I'm driving up tomorrow for 6 days and the last thing I want to see is 100 people floundering around in a 4m swell with strong offshores.

I've been going up to Gnaraloo and the Bluff regularly since 1986, for the last few years taking my teenage kids who surf now as well. The one thing that has stayed the same is that everyone up there is chilled out and respectful of the environment. I think this is because they have worked pretty hard to get there. It's not an easy, cheap holiday and I hope it never becomes one. No one wants it crowded with dickheads with no idea.

If you want respect, be respectful.
