Some interesting comments above - keep them coming as I can assure you all of one thing, there is change on the way for how thumbs work on Seabreeze. Probably not on the same level as "Domino's pizza game changing" but change none the less...

I think mods on fora like this can have a positive impact by moderating harshly - erring on the side of ban rather than tolerate - and then maybe some of the idiots will realise it is not tolerated. Who else will stop the decline of standards? Their mum n dad don't know what they are writing. If they were all kicked off rapidly from social media and fora like this, they would learn at 13 or 14 that it is crap and to desist.

I'm not convinced. Aggressive locking, deleting and banning does not do free speech any favours and often just encourages the trolls (@#$%wits) to try harder in their efforts. There is simply no way you can stop trolls getting on to the forum so it is more about how you handle them while they are here.

As forum goers the report button is your friend - don't like someone's behaviour? Report them and the mods will take a look.

I don't care if you all redthumb me or hate me but I do care if seabreeze is bypassed by noobs or my helpful posts are redthumbed by a loser with something to prove.

And that is exactly why change is on the way.

It will be interesting to see how people's past behaviour here will impact what they can / can't do going forwards, but that's karma for you...

Be careful what you wish for, because one day you just might get it. [}:)]

I think it'd be interesting to see people accountable for how they use their 10 thumbs per day, Laurie has the stats on who's doing what, why not have a system where the number of greens and reds you use (total) are posted with your name/Avatar and number of posts, i.e. you can use them but must be done wisely as you'll have to standby/live with having an unattractive tally to your name.

Personally I like to think I'm pretty even handed (i.e. only use them for things I strongly agree or disagree with) with how I use mine but the reality is that in my time here I have no idea of if that is true or not, I'd certainly be interested to see my own stats.

an idea:

Last week's post count = this week's thumb count.
3 posts? 3 thumbs.

At least then contributions would match thumbability. Plus it's pretty easy to tell if someone's repetitively posting one word over and over to B(.Y.)ST their count up.

Personally I have had the dreaded red thumber follow me for a few weeks hitting every single comment. Someone I annoyed (plenty of contenders there) but while it made a mockery of the system I can't say it worried me in the slightest.

Name & shame accounts for the curious?

I still don't understand why you're all so outraged.

- there's a system in place
- people use the system according to how they're allowed
- ???
- outrage

I signed up here like 5 years ago or so. And if I were allowed 10 thumbs a day then that's about 18,000 I could've dished out. So what? I see on the longboard forum mac has just clocked 20,000 posts. Outrage?

Or is it only the colour? Maybe if laurie lets you all change the colour, like I have on the wind graphs.

Why not phone the Today-Tonight outraged viewer hotline and let them out the offenders of this heinuos crime ??

Or better still, try 4 Corners - it will make PM's question time tomorrow with an official Government policy on the matter released 2 minutes later blaming Joe Hockey. The Opposition will in turn blame boat people.

Then next week all thumbs will be taxed and the problem solved.

The Greens will immediately move to block all thumbs.

(in September the thumb tax will be repealled and replaced with a opposable digit tax, which will be a vastly different and much fairer system)

I get what you're saying Mark, but the very nature of the infrastructure makes the internet anonymous. It's not face to face in the street and never will be. A determined "troll" can wreak havoc if they want. There are very few rules and any artificial rules are mostly easy to overcome. And it's all OK as long as people don't crossover too heavily into real life rules.

Unfortunately they do cross over into real life rules. A very full-on troll about 10yrs ago wrecked havoc, and a few of the boys drove a long way at night to let him know what was what.

Sounds like those idiots that drove along way to let him know what was what were a bunch of redneck hoodlems that should be locked away for a looong time.
Or just need to unplug and care about the more important things in life.
Tossers. Sounds like the rednecks crossed the line big time and shouldnt be able to enter forums again.

They may well be redneck hoons, but for some people on line or in real life you will be dealt with for what you say. So anonymity that people hide behind on the net is not always as good as it seems..

Ive said it before and ill say it again. If you wouldn't talk to someone face to face in that manner, than you shouldn't online. Remember people these days are being taken to court for there online antics

Why? Completely different scenarios. The way I behave at dinner with the queen is different to the way I behave for a counter meal at the local.

We all lurk in here and the other threads as well Doggie, who doesn't peek on the neighbours from time to time?

Wouldn't an easy fix to keep the red/green thumbs but add a feature where if you hover over the little red/green graph thingy a window pops up that shows who has given red/green for that particular post?

Na, I think he ment with a queen lol ,,, oh no, he might give me a rd thumb now,, but thats ok, I'll drive around with my mates and beat him up,,,thats cool.

Just get rid of the red thumb system so the people that get them all the time dont get so upset and have a sook.
Are they really needed??
Im sure if someone says something that is not good advise for a noob, the crew that live their lives through multiple interweb foruming will be more than happy to tell them its wrong, even if its right. At the end of the day, if they are a noob/learning a sport, it dosent mean they are stupid and cant tell somethings someone says dosent sound right.

Red/green, or like/dislike, agree/disagree, what ever Laurie decides on they should stay in some form or another. It frees the forums up from mind numbing quoted posts that only add +1.

Plus how will the caption comp be decided if it goes????

Anyway, like you suggestion about the hover showing who did red n green. It retains the thumbs system (which stops people writing +1 +1 ad nauseum) but makes it transparent.

Anyway I await the changes that greenpat got me wondering about...

You will also note that in the bit you snipped out I said I do not condone that, I agree it was wrong.
But the point is that if the juvenile nag nag dumb sh!t comments from some certain people is allowed to continue, maybe that will happen again. Prevention better than cure.
Maybe cracking down on tools online might prevent another teenager from taking their own life or redneck retribution as above.

Maybe a bit like calling people homos all the time as an insult hey.
There has been 100's of teenage suicides over that.
You cant really be all high and mighty about trying to stop teenage suicides , but post degrading peoples sexuality as an insult,,,really??

Anyway,, I think the topic has gone off track. I think it was about red thumbs/green thumbs. I dont think people are killing themselves because they got a red thumb. If they did, I think they might have needed more help than what seabreeze.com could give them.
We are all gulity of saying stupid crap on the forums, Im no saint thats for sure, but the thumbs up or down wont change that??Will it??

No thumb ratings = no more whingers about red thumbs
