I wonder if it's possible that the GW is attracted to the receiver in some way. We know they are very sensitive to electrical current (shark shields), maybe when the tag pings the receiver the shark gets a bit of a buzz or something.

maybe we should be doing this to them, electric collars

I have it on good authority from a shark expert that sharks will hang around for days at the same spot if they find somewhere they like.

Apparently the issue with the ocean reef one is that fisheries are refusing to disclose if it is the same shark or different ones that is triggering the receiver several times. As far as I understand these receivers are very unsophisticated and only set off an alert if the shark is within 200-300m I think. My question is why are the WA state gov not investing in the more advance gps technology trackers which would enable us to do so much more to learn about this amazing species. However, they were unable to tag a single GWS on a 6 month tagging programme and then they come up with that crazy cull if within 50m of a swimming area policy! Talk about a knee jerk reaction. We need research to learn about their movements and habits here in WA in order to develop an effective strategy to deal with them, end of.

Buy a shark shield or defence system. Take your chances dont surf when its sharky and forget about sharks. I dont think we can rely on sqiuds (scientists) to come up with an explanation if they are associated with Government. The pollys have come up with nothing but hair brain ideas so we cant rely on them. The only idea I have heard that makes any sense is starting a shark fishing program for overseas and domestic sales. A bit of a win win idea. I know scuba you hate that idea. What about the poor bloke who has lost his shop and the families who have lost a lot more. Instead of coming up with an action plan we toss money at the problem as say Oh we are sorting it out. This notion is what our Govt has used to solve most of our unsolved problems.

You can't eat white shark meat.

As for people losing their businesses because of sharks...I'm not even remotely convinced. I am more likely to believe people's businesses fail due to poor management/planning than because there are sharks near our beaches.

I agree with everything else you've said.

I do agree Dive shops have been hurt the most by Great Whites. But i do feel a lot of the responsibility for that relies on poor judgement from our government and even worse hysteria created by media networks[}:)]

Sharks are being treated like some huge threat to National security. Hell there almost bigger than the war on terrorism it would seem

Maybe soon even bigger than the boat people.

Wow, that was painful to read.

"anchor any Whites they catch near the beach. The other great whites won't go near it."

Don't know where they pull their stupid ideas and 'facts' from.

I recon that might have been a killer whale. Whites will hunt and eat small whites, that has come up before. I think that if they can smell a dead shark eg blood and guts etc they dont like that and will stay away from the smell. Well thats the theory anyway. I read that on the internet so it must be true

Actually Doggie Orcas will normally only ever eat the Sharks liver. I would also suggest you wouldn't get a Orca to eat anything already dead as they are extremely intelligent and fussy what they eat.

They will even live a seal alone if its not there preferred type

They actually say the hardest thing to teach a Dolphin or Orca is to eat dead food. Once you've cracked that everything else is super easy due to there high intelligence.

Edit: Just read the article. What a twit. How do people like that get a opinion ever printed

That's a male shark in that photograph. I've seen it before but know nothing about it's back story. Wouldn't surprise me too much if it was a male on male attack...then again, maybe the shark was entangled in a net or hooked on a line and another shark decided to make use of the situation.

Yep I know that JB but they still have to bite it to get to the liver.

The bite radius doesn't match what you would expect from an orca.
It is a fairly wide bite, like what you might expect from a larger shark. Orcas have very narrow skulls.

You're right as to the location doggie and as I understand it there was a 5-6 metre white hanging in the area at the time this occurred.

Or she was getting him back for her sex-related injuries

*sharks need to bite onto each other to have sex.
