I think this GW likes the receiver off Ocean Reef. It has been there for a few days now.

I pretty much ignore most of the sightings that are reported, (sharks live in the ocean) but I find it interesting that this one has been hanging around the same area for so long. I think the receivers have a pretty small range, maybe 300 or 500m?

At the risk of speculating, I wouldn't be surprised if it's due to fishing in the area.
We've seen it a million times with fisherman trying to lure in sharks to get their story in the paper.

I wonder if it's possible that the GW is attracted to the receiver in some way. We know they are very sensitive to electrical current (shark shields), maybe when the tag pings the receiver the shark gets a bit of a buzz or something.

A wild animal thats 4.5m long and more than a tonne of solid muscle and teeth is more than capable of ruining someone's day long before being observed as 'posing a threat'.

There is always the possibility I suppose. All the acoustic receivers would produce an electrical pulse of some sort in the water (the DR4G models we use in Perth run on 9v batteries), especially the 'active' receivers, which make up roughly half of the receivers around Perth.

As for how much they attract the sharks, I'm not sure. I suppose you could research the electro-frequencies that the receivers emit and which frequencies the sharks are attracted to and come up with an idea, but that sounds like a lot of work Possible thesis material for someone maybe,

That's like putting a tracker on a migrating duck, and shooting it as it flies away and then eat it for tea. (albeit a duck with big ol' teeth)

Suba i would love to have a quick chat. I have chased Tagging info from head to tail. I have just got of the phone from channel 9 as well as they have started asking for me and getting the same stone wall. Rachel Stewart was chasing the info through parliament for me also but still got nothing.

I just want to to know how many GW sharks have been tagged in WA by our state government? Then i would also like to know why now after a period of absolutely nothing (as far as monitors getting pinged) are we now in the last 4 weeks getting so many? Have they always been there and our fisheries kept it quiet or are there now loads more tagged sharks just all of a sudden swimming around

If you have any info on the above you'd help me wonders Im happy for it to be of the record..

But it is pointless removing it really.

What percentage are tagged. Who is to say there are not another dozen doing the same thing. Killing the one tagged one, which could provide info on their behaviour habits isn't very smart.

Perhaps it shows they are not the ruthless people eating rogues. It's been there a few weeks and hasn't eaten anyone.

The South Aussie government has tagged most of those. In Fact they have tagged over a 100. My question is our State government? They have so far spent millions on it so i'm expecting more than 12 in 4 years that is what i have been told[}:)]

Out of interest the monitors that we have in place will record tags from SA government, WA government and even from Ocean Tag South Africa. As for the information we can get from them, well a Shark named Brenda that was tagged in South Africa has had her receiver going of from a Ute in Mozambique for a week or more now so they can tell a fair bit of info if they want too

Probably just finishing off digesting it's last meal and knows there's an easy feed there when it's hungry again.

I just hope that nobody gets taken again soon especially around that area. Would be a real shame to have known that there was a possibility it could have been prevented.
